Polymerization of vinylcyclopropanes. III. Cationic polymerization of stereoisomers of 1-halo-2-vinylcyclopropanes

Vinylcyclopropane derivatives, 1-chloro- and 1-bromo-2-vinylcyclopropane, have respectively two stereoisomers, and radical polymerizations of both isomers gave 1,5-type polymers. On the other hand, only the cis isomers gave a polymer which had mainly 1,2-type structural units in cationic polymerizations with Lewis acids. The difference between the cationic polymerizabilities of the cis and trans isomers is interpreted in terms of steric conformation of monomers.     

Raman spectra of stilbene negative ions in tetrahydrofuran solution

Raman spectra of stilbene mono- and di-negative ions in tetrahydrofuran solution were obtained by Ar⁺ laser exciting lines. A considerable frequency shift was observed for several vibrations in the successive steps: stilbene → (stilbene)^? → (stilbene)^2?. The observed shift is discussed in a simple VB scheme, particularly in comparison with the results on anthracene negative ions. The resonance Raman effect was striking for both ions with intensity maxima at the exciting wavelengths close to the absorption maxima.     

Synthesis of enantiopure 1,2-diamine attached to cross-linked polystyrene and its application to an insoluble catalyst for asymmetric hydrogenation

A novel enantiopure 1,2-diamine (5) having two phenolic hydroxy groups was attached into chloromethylated polystyrene through benzyl ether linkage, which was used as a chiral ligand of the catalyst in asymmetric hydrogenation of acetophenone.     

The passivation phenomenon of platinum in fused lithium chloride + potassium chloride eutectic: Part II. Chlorine overpotential and superpassivation of platinum

Platinum is known to have a very high chlorine overpotential, about 0.8 V, in fused lithium chloride + potassium chloride eutectic. The high overpotential can be ascribed to the formation of the thick passivation film of platinum chlorides. The high chlorine overpotential was decreased by the addition of alkali metal oxides and a reversible chlorine evolution was revealed in a similar manner as the graphite electrode. The reversible chlorine evolution was ascribed to the formation of the oxide passivation film. The chlorine overpotential at the oxide film was increased stepwise as the applied potential was made more positive. The stepped transitions of the chlorine overpotential was ascribed to the valence change of the oxide film. Platinum shows a typical N-shaped passivation at +0.65 V versus Ag/AgCl(0.1) which has been ascribed to the dissolution of platinum into Pt(II) ions and following formation of the passivation film of supersaturated Pt(II) chloride. Platinum was found to show another passivation phenomenon at high temperatures, above 450°C. The N-shaped current-potential curve was observed at +1.8 V which was far more positive than the potential of the standard chlorine electrode. The dissolution of platinum prior to the passivation was found to occur due to the formation of high valence platinum ions such as Pt⁶⁺ and Pt⁸⁺.     

Production of highly specific anti-testosterone antiserum by an immunotolerance method

Anti-testosterone antisera were produced by pretreatment of rabbits with 15 alpha-carboxymethyl-5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone linked to a copolymer of D-glutamic acid and D-lysine (D-GL) before immunization with the bovine serum albumin conjugate of 15 alpha- and 15 beta-carboxymethyltestosterone. The specificity for 5 alpha-dihydrotestosterone of the antitestosterone antisera was considerably improved.     

Palladium-catalyzed preparation of α-allyl esters and α,β-unsaturated esters from saturated esters via their silyl acetals

Reaction of ketene silyl acetals with allylic carbonates in the presence of palladium-phosphine catalyst in dioxane gives α-allyl esters in high yields. When the reaction is carried out with phosphine-free palladium catalyst in nitriles, α,β-unsaturated esters are obtained in good yields.     

Micromechanisms of failure in short-fiber-reinforced high-impact polystyrene under tensile loading

Injection-molded, short-glass-fiber-reinforced high-impact polystyrene was investigated under uniaxial tension with special attention to the effects of fiber and rubber concentration on fracture behavior. According to a fracture morphology study performed by polarized optical and scanning electron microscopy, crazes were consecutively initiated from rubber-styrene composite particles and from fiber ends. The rubber particles exhibited an intra-particle failure mode which resulted from the failure manner of the matrix becoming of a more brittle character with increasing fiber fraction. Fibers were surrounded by neigh boring growing crazes. Failure at the fiber-matrix interfaces proceeded with an increase in the number of crazes. With increasing concentration of the fibers, crazing at rubber particles appeared to be suppressed and crazing occurred more preferentially at the fiber ends, which accelerated a macroscopic fracture.Dedicated to Prof. H.
