Determination of hexabromocyclododecane diastereoisomers and tetrabromobisphenol A in water and sediment by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry.

A method to determine alpha-, beta- and gamma-hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) in water and sediments was presented using solid phase extraction (SPE) and/or solvent extraction. Recoveries from sediments were approximately 100% for all the chemicals, while recoveries of alpha-, beta- and gamma-HBCDs from water were dependent on the extraction method. In the case of dichloromethane (CH2Cl2) extraction, recoveries of alpha-, beta- and gamma-HBCD from landfill leachates were 77%, 88% and 92%, respectively. Technical difficulties in HBCD measurement are discussed in terms of the physico-chemical properties of HBCD isomers. The method was applied to landfill samples and marine sediment.     

Novel flow injection-fluorometric method for the determination of trace silicate and its application to ultrapurified water analysis

A highly sensitive fluorescence quenching method for the determination of silicate based on the formation of an ion associate between molybdosilicate and Rhodamine B (RB) in nitric acid medium was developed. A flow injection system coupled with a fluorescence detector was used for the measurement of fluorescence intensity at 560 and 580 nm as excitation and emission wavelengths, respectively. The calibration graph for Si showed a linear range of 0.1–5 ng cm⁻³ with correlation coefficient of 0.9999, and the detection limit of 0.06 ng cm⁻³. The proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of silicate in ultrapurified water with satisfactory results.     

Semidifferential electroanalysis with a solid working electrode

Semidifferential electroanalysis is described for hexacyanoferrate(III), dichromate, copper(II), p-aminophenol, p-benzoquinone, m-dinitrobenzene, guanine, guanosine, adenine, and adenosine at a stationary solid working electrode. Nearly symmetrical, peaked curves are obtained for the electrode processes of all the samples investigated. The predicted dependence of peak height and peak potential on concentration, electrode area, and potential scan rate are confirmed-experimentally for the glassy carbon disk electrode. It is demonstrated that the technique with the solid working electrode provides higher sensitivity and better resolution than ordinary linear sweep voltammetry. The sensitivity is somewhat worse than in differential pulse voltammetry, but the technique has the advantage of Speed.     

A new series of antiallergic agents. I. Synthesis and activity of 11-(2-aminoethyl)thio-6,11-dihydrodibenz[b,e]oxepin derivatives.

A new series of 11-substituted 6,11-dihydrodibenz[b,e]oxepin derivatives was synthesized and evaluated for antiallergic activity. Convenient methods for the preparation of sulfides from alcohols were developed. Structure-activity relationships are described. Compound 7, 11-[2-(dimethylamin)ethyl]thio-6,11-dihydrodibenz[b,e] oxepin-2-carboxylic acid hydrochloride, was the most potent in the rat passive cutaneous anaphylaxis test (ED50 = 0.92 mg/kg p.o.). It had a potent inhibitory effect on anaphylactic bronchoconstriction in guinea pigs (ED50 = 0.029 mg/kg p.o.) and H1 receptor antagonistic effect (Ki = 14 nM) with few central nervous system side effects. Additionally, an antagonistic effect against prostaglandin D2-induced contraction of isolated guinea pig trachea (pA2 = 5.73) was an attractive mechanism of action of the new antiallergic agent. Compound 7 was selected for further evaluation as KW-4994.     

Ca at C82 isomers: computed temperature dependency of relative concentrations

Relative concentrations of nine isomers of Ca at C82 derived from the C82 isolated-pentagon-rule satisfying cages are computed in a wide temperature interval. The computations are based on the Gibbs energy constructed from partition functions supplied with molecular parameters from density functional theory calculations. Five structures show significant populations at higher temperatures: C2v > Cs > C2 > C3v > Cs. The computed relative stabilities agree well with available observations.
