Pyrolysis of amines: Infrared spectrum of methyleneimine

Methyleneimine was detected in the gas phase by a moderately high resolution infrared spectrometer as one of the intermediate species produced by a pyrolysis of amines. Observed vibrational frequencies of some isotopic derivatives have been combined with the ab initio values to reach a most reliable force constants set. Some other spectroscopic parameters, involving geometrical parameters and dipole moment derivatives, have also been calculated ab initio and compared with the observation. Its half-life in our experimental apparatus was about 10 min, which is much longer than the previously reported values, 0.1 or 10 sec.     

Magnetic and structural investigations on substituted Pr2Co17-xTx systems (T= Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu and Al)

Magnetic and structural characteristics of Pr₂Co₁₇-based ternaries, in which Co is partly replaced by other transition elements, namely Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu and Al, have been investigated. The objective of the work was to explore the possibility of enhancing the anisotropy of Pr₂Co₁₇ to the point that it would be useful for permanent magnet fabrication. X-ray diffraction indicates that all the systems studied occur in the rhombohedral Th₂Zn₁₇ structure. The cell constants increase as Fe, Mn, etc., are introduced in the system, which indicates that substitution occurs in the Co sublattice. The Curie temperatures, T_c, decrease monotonically with increasing x in the order Fe < Cu < Mn < Al < Cr. The saturation magnetization, M_s, increases with increasing x for the Fe system with x 8. For x #62; 8 in the Pr₂Co_17-xFe_x system and in all other ternary systems st died, M_s decreases with x, the magnitude of the effect being in the order Cr #62; Al #62; Mn #62; Cu. The rate of decrease is larger than that expected as a simple dilution except for the systems containing Cu. Significant modification of the anisotropy characteristics of Pr₂Co₁₇ is observed upon substitution. The planar anisotropy of Pr₂Co₁₇ becomes uniaxial with Fe (x 4) and Mn (x 2) substitutions. With Cr and Al substitutions, the plane-seeking tendency of Pr₂Co₁₇ is significantly weakened.     

Aeroelastic instability of rectangular cylinders in a heaving mode

This paper deals with wind tunnel experiments on the aeroelastic instability in a heaving mode of two-dimensional rectangular cylinders in a uniform two-dimensional flow. Both the free oscillation method and the forced oscillation method are employed for the experiments. Emphasis is placed on finding the effect of the ratio $\text{c}\text{d}$, which is the ratio of the lengths of the sides of the rectangle, to the aeroelastic instability phenomena in the vicinity of the resonance speed. Emphasis is also placed on finding possible limitations in the application of the quasi-steady aerodynamic theory to the analysis of the aeroelastic characteristics.     

Theory of the spin depolarisation rate of μ+ SR in pure Fe

The diffusion constant (D) and the spin depolarisation rate (λ_S) of the positive muon in the ferromagnetic b.c.c. lattices such as Fe have been calculated on the basis of the small polaron (SP) model with particular attention to the hopping and the coherent motions. They have been obtained in the forms: $\text{D=}\text{d}{}^2\text{w}{}_{\mathrm{D}}\text{6}$ and $\text{λ}{}_{\mathrm{S}}\text{=}\text{4γ}{}^2{}_{\mathrm{\mu }}\text{H}{}^2{}_{\mathrm{d}}\text{3w}{}_{\mathrm{S}}$, where d is a jump length, and H_d is a magnitude of internal dipolar field. At high temperatures, the activated-type hopping motion gives a dominant contribution to w_D, and w_S coincides with w_D. With decreasing temperature, w_D turns to be increasing owing to the coherent motion. Whereas w_S deviates from w_D, after passing the minimum, to have a maximum, and then decreases in inverse proportion to a lifetime (_B) of the SP band states. Because of the cell periodicity of the internal fields, the spin in an SP band state feels a definite magnetic field corresponding to the state, and sees various fields if scattered to other states. These scattering processes succeeding in a time shorter than (γ_μH_d)^-1 result in the motional narrowing of the spectra, with λ_{S ?} γ²_μH_d_B.

Photon-echo profile in the ultrashort time region for pentacene molecules in crystals

Photon-echo behavior in the ultrashort time region is studied for pentacene molecules in p-terphenyl crystals at 1.7 K by means of the accumulated three-pulse echo. We show highly resolved echo spectra with a parameter of time separation and also time behavior of echo intensity as a function of pulse separation measured at various frequencies near the peak position of the absorption line of the S₀–S₁ transition. We demonstrate various features of echo profile in both time and frequency domains, which are dependent on the time region of observation.
