Half‐Sandwich Iridium Complexes Bearing a Diprotic Glyoxime Ligand: Structural Diversity Induced by Reversible Deprotonation

Synthesis and deprotonation reactions of half‐sandwich iridium complexes bearing a vicinal dioxime ligand were studied. Treatment of [{Cp*IrCl(μ‐Cl)}₂] (Cp*=η⁵‐C₅Me₅) with dimethylglyoxime (LH₂) at an Ir:LH₂ ratio of 1:1 afforded the cationic dioxime iridium complex [Cp*IrCl(LH₂)]Cl ( 1 ). The chlorido complex 1 undergoes stepwise and reversible deprotonation with potassium carbonate to give the oxime–oximato complex [Cp*IrCl(LH)] ( 2 ) and the anionic dioximato(2?) complex K[Cp*IrCl(L)] ( 3 ) sequentially. Meanwhile, twofold deprotonation of the sulfato complex [Cp*Ir(SO₄)(LH₂)] ( 4 ) resulted in the formation of the oximato‐bridged dinuclear complex [{Cp*Ir(μ‐L)}₂] ( 5 ). X‐ray analyses disclosed their supramolecular structures with one‐dimensional infinite chain ( 1 and 2 ), hexagonal open channels ( 3 ), and a tetrameric rhomboid ( 4 ) featuring multiple intermolecular hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions.     

Macrocyclic Metal Complexes Bearing Rigid Polyaromatic Ligands: Synthesis and Catalytic Activity

We synthesised palladium and platinum complexes possessing cyclic and acyclic pincer‐type polyaromatic ligands and investigated their structural effect on the catalysis. The pincer‐type bis(6‐arylpyridin‐2‐yl)benzene skeleton was constructed via Kröhnke pyridine synthesis under transition metal‐free conditions on gram‐scale quantity. Ligand structure significantly influenced catalytic activity toward the platinum‐catalysed hydrosilylation of diphenyl acetylenes, despite the ligand‐independence of the conformations and electronic properties of these complexes.     

Protective Effect of Ferulic Acid against Hydrogen Peroxide Induced Apoptosis in PC12 Cells

Ferulic Acid (FA) is a highly abundant phenolic phytochemical which is present in plant tissues. FA has biological effects on physiological and pathological processes due to its anti-apoptotic and anti-oxidative properties, however, the detailed mechanism(s) of function is poorly understood. We have identified FA as a molecule that inhibits apoptosis induced by hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) or actinomycin D (ActD) in rat pheochromocytoma, PC12 cell. We also found that FA reduces H₂O₂-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in PC12 cell, thereby acting as an anti-oxidant. Then, we analyzed FA-mediated signaling responses in rat pheochromocytoma, PC12 cells using antibody arrays for phosphokinase and apoptosis related proteins. This FA signaling pathway in PC12 cells includes inactivation of pro-apoptotic proteins, SMAC/Diablo and Bad. In addition, FA attenuates the cell injury by H₂O₂ through the inhibition of phosphorylation of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK). Importantly, we find that FA restores expression levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a key neuroprotective effector, in H₂O₂-treated PC12 cells. As a possible mechanism, FA increases BDNF by regulating microRNA-10b expression following H₂O₂ stimulation. Taken together, FA has broad biological effects as a neuroprotective modulator to regulate the expression of phosphokinases, apoptosis-related proteins and microRNAs against oxidative stress in PC12 cells.     

syn-selective direct catalytic asymmetric Mannich-type reactions of hydroxyketones using Y{N(SiMe3)2}3/linked-BINOL complexes

[reaction, structure: see text] Chiral Y{N(SiMe3)2}3/linked-BINOL catalyst generated Y-enolate in situ from various hydroxyketones (R2 = aryl, heteroaryl). Beta-amino-alpha-hydroxy ketones (R1 = aryl, heteroaryl, alkenyl) were obtained syn-selectively (up to 96/4) in high ee (up to 98%) and good yield (up to 98% yield).     

Demonstration of an optical quantum controlled-NOT gate without path interference

We report the first experimental demonstration of an optical quantum controlled-NOT gate without any path interference, where the two interacting path interferometers of the original proposals have been replaced by three partially polarizing beam splitters with suitable polarization dependent transmittance and reflectance. The performance of the device is evaluated using a recently proposed method, by which the quantum process fidelity and the entanglement capability can be estimated from the 32 measurement results of two classical truth tables, significantly less than the 256 measurement results required for full quantum tomography.     

On the connectedness of self-affine attractors

Let T = T(A, D) be a self-affine attractor in defined by an integral expanding matrix A and a digit set D. In the first part of this paper, in connection with canonical number systems, we study connectedness of T when D corresponds to the set of consecutive integers . It is shown that in and , for any integral expanding matrix A, T(A, D) is connected. In the second part, we study connectedness of Pisot dual tiles, which play an important role in the study of -expansions, substitutions and symbolic dynamical systems. It is shown that each tile of the dual tiling generated by a Pisot unit of degree 3 is arcwise connected. This is naturally expected since the digit set consists of consecutive integers as above. However surprisingly, we found families of disconnected Pisot dual tiles of degree 4. We even give a simple necessary and sufficient condition of connectedness of the Pisot dual tiles of degree 4.
