Amide conformational switching induced by protonation of aromatic substituent

[reaction: see text] Introduction of an electron-withdrawing group on the aromatic ring of N-methylacetanilide decreased the ratio of the cis conformer, and the ratio correlates well with the Hammett sigma values of the substituents. These steric properties can be applied to achieve amide conformational switching by protonation at the aromatic substituent of 4-[bis(dimethylamino)]-N-methylacetanilide or N-[p-(dimethylamino)phenyl]-N-phenylacetamide.     

Co2(CO)8-mediated endo mode cyclization of epoxy-alcohol: synthesis of 2-ethynyl-3-hydroxy-2-methyltetrahydropyran and 2-ethynyl-3-hydroxy-3-methyltetrahydropyran derivatives

Successive treatment of 4,5-epoxy-5-methyl-7-trimethylsilyl-6-heptyne-1-ol with Co2(CO)8 at 0 degrees C and a catalytic amount of BF3 x OEt2 at -78 degrees C gave the tetrahydropyran derivatives with the cobalt-complexed moiety. Similarly 4,5-epoxy-4-methyl-7-trimethylsilyl-6-heptyne-1-ol underwent ring closure under the above conditions to provide the corresponding tetrahydropyran derivatives. The preferential endo mode cyclization over the exo one was observed in these experiments.     

Construction of Equilibrium Magnetic Vector Potentials

In [9] we introduced the notion of equilibrium surface current JdS_x on the closed C smooth surfaces in R ³ as a generalization of electric solenoid, and proved their existence. We here show an algorithm for JdS_x starting from a given surface current J dS_x on .     

Angular position of nodes in the superconducting gap of quasi-2D heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5

The thermal conductivity of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn5 has been studied in a magnetic field rotating within the 2D planes. A clear fourfold symmetry of the thermal conductivity which is characteristic of a superconducting gap with nodes along the ( +/- pi,+/- pi) directions is resolved. The thermal conductivity measurement also reveals a first-order transition at H(c2), indicating a Pauli limited superconducting state. These results indicate that the symmetry most likely belongs to d(x(2)-y(2)), implying that the anisotropic antiferromagnetic fluctuation is relevant to the superconductivity.     

Doppler-shifted cyclotron absorption of electron Bernstein waves via N( parallel)-upshift in a Tokamak plasma

Extraordinary (X) waves are perpendicularly injected for electron Bernstein (B) wave heating into an Ohmically heated plasma from the inboard side in the WT-3 tokamak. Measurements show that absorption does not take place at the electron cyclotron resonance layer nor the upper hybrid resonance layer, but does happen midway between them. This is consistent with the ray tracing prediction, i.e., the poloidal field and poloidal inhomogeneity of toroidal field lead the B waves to have a large parallel refractive index N( parallel) (>1), and the B waves are damped away via the Doppler-shifted cyclotron resonance.     

Geometrical cross-sectional imaging by a heterodyne wavelength-scanning interference confocal microscope

We developed a heterodyne interference confocal microscope, using wavelength modulation of a laser diode to realize quick separate measurement of the refractive indices and geometrical thicknesses of multiple layers. This microscope requires only a single axial movement of the specimen. We can display the geometrical cross sections of the interfaces and the refractive indices of a three-layered object.     

Optical measurements of silicon wafer temperature

An optical technique for precise, non-contact, and real time measurement of silicon wafer temperature that uses the polarized reflectivity ratio R_p/R_s is described. The proposed method is based on temperature dependence of the optical functions of silicon. Expected strong temperature sensitivity is obtained near band gap. Simultaneous monitoring of temperature and oxide layer thickness is discussed using measurements at four wavelength 365 nm, 405 nm, 546 nm, and 820 nm.     

Investigation of metal nanoparticles produced by laser ablation and their catalytic activity

Polydiphenylsilylenemethylene (PDPhSM) thin films, which are difficult to fabricate by conventional methods because of their insolubility and high melting point, have been synthesized by using laser-ablated metal nanoparticles for the thermal ring-opening polymerization of 1,1,3,3-tetraphenyl-1,3-disilacyclobutane (TPDC) in this paper. TPDC was first evaporated on silicon substrates and then exposed to metal (Pt, Cu and Ag) nanoparticles deposition by laser ablation prior to heat treatment. The catalytic activity of Pt, Cu and Ag nanoparticles has been studied. The results showed that the mean diameter of Pt nanoparticles was the smallest, Cu nanoparticles the moderate and Ag nanoparticles the biggest, while the polymerization efficiency for Pt nanoparticles was the highest, Cu nanoparticles the moderate and Ag nanoparticles the lowest. In addition, the penetration behaviours of Pt, Cu and Ag nanoparticles into the TPDC monomer films during laser ablation were different due to the particle size or the chemical interaction between metal nanoparticles and TPDC molecules.     

Validity of retinal oxygen saturation analysis: Hyperspectral imaging in visible wavelength with fundus camera and liquid crystal wavelength tunable filter

The purpose of this paper was to investigate the feasibility of a newly developed hyperspectral fundus imaging camera with a liquid crystal tunable filter. The intensities of different wavelengths of light transmitted through an artery, vein, and the area surrounding these vessels and reflected out were measured, and the differential spectral absorptions were analyzed. Measurements were made from 16 normal eyes and from two artificial capillaries. The ratios of absorption (ROA) of arteries to veins from 500 to 580 nm (range 1) and from 600 to 720 nm (range 2) were calculated. For all eyes, the ROA_range1 was larger than ROA_range2. The ROA obtained from the artificial capillary filled with blood saturated with oxygen or nitrogen was similar to that of simulated data of oxy- and deoxyhemoglobin extinction rate. Most ROAs of human eyes were lower than those of the simulated data and the artificial capillaries. Oxygen saturation analysis by hyperspectral fundus imaging of retinal vessels were qualitatively in agreement with thein vitro analysis or simulated values. However, further improvements are necessary to evaluate the oxygen saturation quantitatively in the retinal blood vessels.     

Single-Proton Pickup Reaction of the Halo Nucleus ^6He on a ^9Be Target at 25 MeV/nucleon

The inclusive differential cross sections of the ^7 Li nucleus in a reaction induced by ^6He on a ^9Be target are measured at an incident energy of 25 MeV/nucleon. Finite-range distorted-wave Born approximation calculations suggest that these ^7 Li particles are formed in a direct single-proton pickup reaction ^9Be（^6He,^7 Li）^8Li. The experimental data can be well reproduced by taking into account of the contributions of both the ground states and the first excited states of ^7Li and ^8Li.
