We describe a simple approach to the controlled removal of molecules from the membrane of large unilamellar vesicles made of fatty acids. Such vesicles shrink dramatically upon mixing with micelles composed of a mixture of fatty acid and a phospholipid (1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC)), as fatty acid molecules leave the vesicle membrane and accumulate within the mixed micelles. Vesicle shrinkage was confirmed by dynamic light scattering, fluorescence recovery after photobleaching of labeled vesicles, and fluorescence resonance energy transfer between lipid dyes incorporated into the vesicle membrane. Most of the encapsulated impermeable solute is retained during shrinkage, becoming concentrated by a factor of at least 50-fold in the final small vesicles. This unprecedented combination of vesicle shrinkage with retention of contents allows for the preparation of small vesicles containing high solute concentrations, and may find applications in liposomal drug delivery.  相似文献

A new technique for molten salt mass determination, termed radioactive tracer dilution, that uses 22Na as a tracer was validated at bench scale. It has been a challenging problem to determine the mass of molten salt in irregularly shaped containers, where a highly radioactive, high-temperature molten salt was used to process nuclear spent/used fuel during electrochemical recycling (pyro-processing) or for coolant/fuel salt from molten salt reactors. A radioactive source with known activity is dissolved into the salt. After a complete mixture, a small amount of the salt is sampled and measured in terms of its mass and radioactivity. By finding the ratio of the mass to radioactivity, the unknown salt mass in the original container can be precisely determined.

Poly lactic acid (PLA) is a compostable, as well as recyclable, sustainable, versatile and environmentally friendly alternative, because the monomer of PLA-lactide (LA) is extracted from natural sources. PLA’s techno-functional properties are fairly similar to fossil-based polymers; however, in pristine state, its brittleness and delicacy during processing pose challenges to its potential exploitation in diverse food packaging applications. PLA is, therefore, re-engineered to improve its thermal, rheological, barrier and mechanical properties through nanoparticle (NP) reinforcement. This review summarises the studies on PLA-based nanocomposites (PLA NCs) developed by reinforcing inorganic metal/metallic oxide, graphite and silica-based nanoparticles (NPs) that exhibit remarkable improvement in terms of storage modulus, tensile strength, crystallinity, glass transition temperature (Tg) value, antimicrobial property and a decrease in water vapour and oxygen permeability when compared with the pristine PLA films. This review has also discussed the regulations around the use of metal oxide-based NPs in food packaging, PLA NC biodegradability and their applications in food systems. The industrial acceptance of NCs shows highly promising perspectives for the replacement of traditional petrochemical-based polymers currently being used for food packaging.  相似文献
