The Local Systemic Change initiative of the National Science Foundation supports projects focusing primarily on teacher enhancement through extensive professional development and the use of standards‐based curriculum materials. The underlying rationale is that the effective use of such materials will ultimately result in enhanced student learning. However, the research base regarding the impact of these efforts on student learning is rather lean. This paper describes the results of a curriculum‐aligned assessment comprising selected items from the Third International Mathematics and Science Study. The assessment was administered to fifth graders involved in a Local Systemic Change project to address the following questions: How does the performance of students involved in the project compare nationally and internationally? and Does length of involvement in the project make a difference in student performance? The dynamics of the muonium substituted cyclohexadienyl radical adsorbed on silicalite and NaZSM‐5 is investigated by means
of avoided level crossing muon spin resonance. The influence of benzene loading on the mobility of the radical is studied.
At low loadings the radicals were found to be located on a single adsorption site where they undergo a wobbling type of motion.
With increasing loading an additional species adsorbed on a different site is observed.

An enzymatic electrosynthesis system was created by combining an aldehyde deformylating oxygenase (ADO) from cyanobacteria that catalyzes the decarbonylation of fatty aldehydes to alkanes and formic acid with an electrochemical interface. This system is able to produce a range of alkanes (octane to propane) from aldehydes and alcohols. The combination of this bioelectrochemical system with a hydrogenase bioanode yields a H2/heptanal enzymatic fuel cell (EFC) able to simultaneously generate electrical energy with a maximum current density of 25 μA cm?2 at 0.6 V and produce hexane with a faradaic efficiency of 24 %. 相似文献

A recently proposed method of looking at sampling uncertainty has been tested by its application to the sampling and analysis of several types of food and an animal feedstuff. In this 'SAD' method, increments comprising the conventional sample (that is, collected in the fashion prescribed by the standard sampling protocol) are allocated to either of two equal sized 'splits', which are prepared and analysed separately. The absolute difference between the analytical results for the two splits (the split absolute difference, or SAD) is plotted on a one-sided control chart. A non-compliance indicates that the combined uncertainty of sampling or analysis is larger than expected and the result of the measurement (the mean of the two split results) is possibly not fit for purpose. In addition, the SAD results give rise to a rugged estimate the uncertainty associated with the sampling protocol, often a major part of the total measurement uncertainty. 相似文献

A study has been conducted using abrasively modified basal and edge-plane graphite, carbon-paste, and carbon–epoxy electrodes to create gold–carbon composite electrodes. Using either nano or micro-sized gold particles their suitability for use in detecting arsenic(III) is assessed. It was found that gold arrays prepared from micron-sized particles gave the best performance for arsenic detection. In particular micron arrays produced in carbon-paste electrodes with an easily renewable surface work well for detection of arsenic, producing a detection limit of 5(±2)×10–9 mol L–1, with a high sensitivity of 10(±0.1) A mol–1 L. 相似文献

We synthesized a series of puromycin analogues to probe the chemical specificity of the ribosome in an intact eukaryotic translation system. These studies reveal that both d-enantiomers and beta-amino acid analogues can be incorporated into protein, and provide a quantitative means to rank natural and unnatural residues. Modeling of a d-amino acid analogue into the 50S ribosomal subunit indicates that steric clash may provide part of the chiral discrimination. The data presented provide one metric of the chiral and regiospecificity of mammalian ribosomes. 相似文献
