Hydrogen Peroxide/Boric Acid: An Efficient System for Oxidation of Aromatic Aldehydes and Ketones to Phenols

Hydrogen peroxide activated by boric acid in the presence of sulfuric acid has been shown to be an efficient oxidizing system for direct conversion of aromatic aldehydes and ketones to phenols.     

An Anthracene-Based Metal-Organic Framework for Selective Photo-Reduction of Carbon Dioxide to Formic Acid Coupled with Water Oxidation

A Zr-based metal-organic framework has been synthesized and employed as a catalyst for photochemical carbon dioxide reduction coupled with water oxidation. The catalyst shows significant carbon dioxide reduction property with concomitant water oxidation. The catalyst has broad visible light as well as UV light absorption property, which is further confirmed from electronic absorption spectroscopy. Formic acid was the only reduced product from carbon dioxide with a turn-over frequency (TOF) of 0.69 h⁻¹ in addition to oxygen, which was produced with a TOF of 0.54 h⁻¹. No external photosensitizer is used and the ligand itself acts as the light harvester. The efficient and selective photochemical carbon dioxide reduction to formic acid with concomitant water oxidation using Zr-based MOF as catalyst is thus demonstrated here.

Dioxane Dibromide–Mediated Solvent‐Free Synthesis of Vicinal Dibromides

Structurally varied vicinal dibromides have been synthesized in high yield and good purity through highly stereoselective anti‐addition of bromine across the olefinic linkages using dioxane dibromide (DD) under solvent‐free conditions.     

Progressive transition from resonant to diffuse reflection in anisotropic colloidal films

The synthesis and characterization of highly ordered three‐dimensional photonic crystals have been the subjects of intense study over the past two decades due to the unique ability of these structures to control light at the nanoscale. Building on that work in recent years, increasing interest is now focused on the unique optical properties of disordered and quasi‐ordered photonic structures. We present a study of the effects of shape anisotropy and disorder on the specular reflection properties of polymer‐based colloidal films comprised of rod‐shaped subunits of varying aspect ratio. We characterize the specular reflectance properties of these films as a function of their increasing levels of disorder, demonstrating progressive transition from resonant reflection to diffuse reflection. First Bis(σ)-borane Complexes of Group 6 Transition Metals: Experimental and Theoretical Studies

A series of bis(σ)-borane complexes of Group 6 transition metals were prepared by direct dihydroborane coordination to the metal center. Reaction of [M(CO)₃(PCy₃)₂] and two dihydroboranes [DurBH₂] and [(Me₃Si)₂NBH₂] (Dur=2,3,5,6-Me₄C₆H) yielded bis(σ)-borane complexes fac-[M(CO)₃(PCy₃){η²-(H₂BR)}] (R=Dur; 1 : M=Cr, 2 : M=W; R=N(SiMe₃)₂; 3 : M=Cr, 4 : M=W). In the case of molybdenum, we have isolated an arene complex ( 5 ) with [DurBH₂] in which the Dur group acts as a η⁶-bound ligand, and with [(Me₃Si)₂NBH₂] a similar bis(σ)-borane complex was isolated, cis,trans-[Mo(CO)₂(PCy₃)₂{η²-(H₂BN(SiMe₃)₂}] ( 6 ), with a different pattern of auxiliary ligands. The complexes were investigated by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, X-ray diffraction analysis, and computational methods. Quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) calculations demonstrated that the borane complexes may be described as pure bis(σ)-borane complexes rather than elongated or stretched examples given that the calculations do not show the presence of a ring-critical point (RCP) at the ring formed by the interactions of the B−H with metal center.     

Orientational order parameter determination of the liquid crystal: 4 propyl paraethoxy phenyl cyclohexyl carboxylate by X-ray studies

The compound 4 propyl paraethoxy phenyl cyclohexyl carboxylate (code name D302) is a member of a homologous series and exhibits liquid crystalline (nematic) behavior in the temperature range 48°C to 78°C. An experiment has been set up for conducting X-ray studies of liquid crystal samples at various temperatures. From X-ray studies conducted at different temperatures on D302, the apparent molecular length and inter-molecular distance and their temperature dependence have been determined. The variation of the orientational-order parameter <P₂>_xray has been determined from the intensities of the scanned X-ray photographs taken at different temperatures. The results have been compared with the<P₂>_opt values obtained by us from birefringence studies.
