In sensorineural hearing loss, damage to inner hair cells or the auditory nerve may result in dead regions in the cochlea, where the information transmission is disrupted. In cochlear implants, similar dead regions might appear if the spiral ganglia do not function. Shannon et al. [J. Assoc. Res. Otolaryngol. 3, 185-199 (2002)] simulated dead regions of varying size and location using a noiseband vocoder. Phoneme recognition by normal-hearing subjects was measured under two frequency-place mapping conditions: the frequency range corresponding to the dead region was (1) removed or (2) reassigned to bands adjacent to the dead region to simulate the off-frequency stimulation of neurons at the edge of a dead region. The present study extends the results of Shannon et al. by including a frequency transposition mapping condition, where the overall acoustic input frequency range was distributed over the entire remaining nondead region. The frequency transposed map provided more acoustic information when compared to the map with the frequency range corresponding to the dead region removed. However, speech perception did not improve for many simulated dead region conditions, possibly due to the spectral distortions in the frequency-place mapping. 相似文献

Electro-optic holography (EOH) is a whole field, laser-based, vibration measurement technique. Highly dense, unresolvable fringe patterns often limit the EOH measurement range. This paper presents a technique for increasing the measurement range of an EOH system using diode laser current modulation. This technique is known as frequency translated electro-optic holography (FTEOH). Using diode laser current modulation, the fringe patterns are based on higher-order Bessel functions and the sensitivity of the EOH system can either be increased or decreased. The amount of sensitivity reduction is limited only by the frequency limit of the signal generator that modulates the current supplied to the diode laser. Three novel isostructural equiatomic gold tetrel pnictides, AuSiAs, AuGeP, and AuGeAs, were synthesized and characterized. These phases crystallize in the noncentrosymmetric (NCS) monoclinic space group Cc (no. 9), featuring square-planar Au within cis-[AuTt2Pn2] units (Tt=tetrel, Si, Ge; Pn=pnictogen, P, As). This is in drastic contrast to the structure of previously reported AuSiP, which exhibits typical linear coordination of Au with Si and P. Chemical bonding analysis through the electron localization function suggests covalent two-center two-electron Tt−Pn bonds, and three-center Au−Tt−Au and Au−Pn−Au bonds with 1.6 e− per bond. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies support the covalent and nonionic nature of Au−Pn and Au−Tt bonds. The title materials were found to be n-type narrow-gap semiconductors or semimetals, with nearly temperature-independent electrical resistivities and low thermal conductivities. A combination of the semimetallic properties with tunable NCS structure provides opportunities for the development of materials based on gold tetrel pnictides. 相似文献

We discuss analyses of trace levels of surface contamination using X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The problem of quantifying common sources of statistical and systematic uncertainties for these measurements is formulated in terms of the needs of extreme ultraviolet lithography, but the results and conclusions are applicable to a broad range of XPS applications. We quantify the systematic uncertainties introduced by particular cases of overlapping peaks on different substrate structures by simulating measured spectra with the National Institute of Standards and Technology Database for the Simulation of Electron Spectra for Surface Analysis (SESSA). One example demonstrates that the relative atomic concentrations of trace elements such as S, P, and halogens on a Ru surface could be dramatically overestimated if the fitting of the overlapping Ru 3d and C 1s peaks excludes the contribution from carbon. We also show how spectra generated by SESSA can be compared with measured spectra to determine absolute amounts of surface impurities on layered samples of the type used for extreme ultraviolet lithography. We provide estimates of the total uncertainty for such measurements by considering the systematic limitations of SESSA and the statistical uncertainties of the measurements. The same procedure can be employed for other multilayered materials. Finally, we describe two approaches for converting XPS detection limits for an elemental impurity in an elemental matrix to the corresponding detection limits for the impurity as a thin film on the surface of the matrix material. 相似文献

Herein, a route to produce highly electrically conductive doped hydroxymethyl functionalized poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films, termed PEDOT(OH) with metal-like charge transport properties using a fully solution processable precursor polymer is reported. This is achieved via an ester-functionalized PEDOT derivative [PEDOT(EHE)] that is soluble in a range of solvents with excellent film-forming ability. PEDOT(EHE) demonstrates moderate electrical conductivities of 20–60 S cm−1 and hopping-like (i.e., thermally activated) transport when doped with ferric tosylate (FeTos3). Upon basic hydrolysis of PEDOT(EHE) films, the electrically insulative side chains are cleaved and washed from the polymer film, leaving a densified film of PEDOT(OH). These films, when optimally doped, reach electrical conductivities of ≈1200 S cm−1 and demonstrate metal-like (i.e., thermally deactivated and band-like) transport properties and high stability at comparable doping levels. 相似文献

The solvent and temperature dependent aggregation of high molecular weight bis[S‐(+)‐3,7‐dimethyloctyl)] substituted poly(p‐phenyleneethynylene) (PPE, 2 ) was examined by absorption, emission and circular dichroism spectroscopy. All herein employed methods strongly support the view that 2 forms ordered aggregates in the solid state and in solvent mixtures.
