Generalized hill climbing (GHC) algorithms provide a framework for modeling local search algorithms for addressing intractable discrete optimization problems. Measures for assessing the finite-time performance of GHC algorithms have been developed using this framework, including the expected number of iterations to visit a predetermined objective function value level. This paper analyzes how the expected number of iterations to visit a predetermined objective function value level can be estimated for cyclical simulated annealing. Cyclical simulated annealing uses a cooling schedule that cycles through a set of temperature values. [reaction: see text] We report the development of a safety-catch photolabile linker that allows the light-directed synthesis and spatially selective photorelease of oligonucleotides from microarrays. The linker remains stable to light during DNA synthesis, and is activated for photorelease after acidic hydrolysis. We demonstrate that the photoreleased oligonucleotides can be amplified by PCR to produce double stranded DNA. The advantages offered by this linker could aid the development of an automated gene synthesis platform.  相似文献

We introduce a high-order discontinuous Galerkin (dG) scheme for the numerical solution of three-dimensional (3D) wave propagation problems in coupled elastic–acoustic media. A velocity–strain formulation is used, which allows for the solution of the acoustic and elastic wave equations within the same unified framework. Careful attention is directed at the derivation of a numerical flux that preserves high-order accuracy in the presence of material discontinuities, including elastic–acoustic interfaces. Explicit expressions for the 3D upwind numerical flux, derived as an exact solution for the relevant Riemann problem, are provided. The method supports h-non-conforming meshes, which are particularly effective at allowing local adaptation of the mesh size to resolve strong contrasts in the local wavelength, as well as dynamic adaptivity to track solution features. The use of high-order elements controls numerical dispersion, enabling propagation over many wave periods. We prove consistency and stability of the proposed dG scheme. To study the numerical accuracy and convergence of the proposed method, we compare against analytical solutions for wave propagation problems with interfaces, including Rayleigh, Lamb, Scholte, and Stoneley waves as well as plane waves impinging on an elastic–acoustic interface. Spectral rates of convergence are demonstrated for these problems, which include a non-conforming mesh case. Finally, we present scalability results for a parallel implementation of the proposed high-order dG scheme for large-scale seismic wave propagation in a simplified earth model, demonstrating high parallel efficiency for strong scaling to the full size of the Jaguar Cray XT5 supercomputer.  相似文献

Abstract

On complete Riemannian manifolds, a geodesic linking two different points could be approximated by applying short ruler methods to shorten a given path iteratively. In this paper we take a closer look at a short ruler method on a cone. To handle the problems caused by the fact that the cone is not smooth at its apex, we unwind the cone isometrically into the plane, and show that the sequence of shortened curves converges to a geodesic.  相似文献

Linear high-density polyethylenes with molar masses M w between 240 and 1,000,000 g/mol, obtained by metallocene catalysts, were characterized in shear using oscillatory and creep tests. The polydispersities of the molar mass distributions (MMDs) lay between 1 and 16. The resulting zero shear-rate viscosities η0 covered a range from 2.5×10−3 to around 108 Pas. Above a critical molar mass of M c≈2,900 g/mol, the experimental results can be described by the relation η0M w3.6, independently of the MMD. The oscillatory data were fitted with a Carreau–Yasuda equation. The resulting parameters were correlated to molecular structure. The parameter a, being a quantity for the width of the transition between the Newtonian and the non-Newtonian regime, showed a dependence on the molar mass M w but not on M w/M n. The parameter λ of the Carreau-Yasuda equation was found to be the reciprocal crossover frequency for all samples with a log-Gaussian MMD. λ depends on the molar mass M w and also on M w/M n.

Abstract

Interactions between ammonium and nitrate as competitive N sources depend on various biotic and abiotic factors. The preference for one of these N sources and the influence of ammonium on nitrate uptake and nitrate reductase activity was investigated in a 15N labelling experiment using 2-year-old potted plants of ash (Fraxinus excelsior L.) and oak (Quercus robur L.) under greenhouse conditions.

Seedlings of both tree species use ammonium and nitrate in equal amounts when both N forms are supplied in a 1:1 ratio (1.5 mM NH4 + + 1.5 mM NO3 ?), although there is a slight tendency that ammonium is preferred. In both species total N uptake is higher if ammonium and nitrate are supplied simultaneously when compared with uptake of nitrate alone (3 mM nitrate). If nitrate is the sole N source N uptake is only half as high as if ammonium and nitrate are supplied in a ratio of 1:1.

The distribution of nitrate reductase between shoot and roots is not influenced by the N-form: nitrate reductase activity is always highest in the roots of both species under the conditions of this experiment.

Xylem sap analyses showed that both species transport higher concentrations of amino acids than of nitrate from the roots to the shoot. The amino acid composition is independent of the type of N source. Furthermore, ash trees contain more nitrate in the xylem sap than oak trees, reflecting the higher N uptake and the higher nitrate reductase activity in the leaves of this species.  相似文献
