Determination of the absolute configuration of the asymmetric center at C11 in the eudesmanolides

It has been shown that it is possible to use the method of circular dichroism to determine the absolute configuration of the asymmetric center at C₁₁ in the eudesmanolides. The alkylation of benzimidazole derivatives with γ-valerolactone

Reaction of 1, 3-dimethylbenzimidazolone and its 5-methyl and 5-chloro derivatives with -valerolactone in presence of anhydrous aluminum chloride gives the corresponding 6-(1-methyl-3-carboxypropyl)-benzimidazolones.     

Electroreduction of benzo-1,2,3-dithiazolium salts and their selenium analogs in nonaqueous solution

The electroreduction of benzo-1,2,3-dithiazolium cations and their selenium analogs in aprotic solvents takes place in two steps. The first step is a reversible, one-electron transfer leading to the formation of stable radicals detected by EPR. As a result of further electroreduction, the radicals obtained combine with six electrons to form the corresponding o-aminothio(seleno)phenols. Analysis of the reduction potentials of the compounds studied shows that the substitution of a selenium atom for a sulfur in these cations, especially in the 2 position of the heterocycle, facilitates their electrochemical reduction. Vinylacetylene chemistry

It is shown that heating vinylacetylenic piperidols I with phosphorus oxychloride in pyridine solution gives dienynes II, the structure of which is determined, in the case of II (R=H), by means of IR spectra and PMR. Hydration of the dienynes II (R=H, Me) in the presence of mercuric sulfate in methanol solution gives -methoxyketones III (R=H, Me). It is also shown that III and aqueous solutions of ammonia or primary amines give the bicyclic piperid-4-ones IV. In the synthesis of IV (R=H, R₁ = i-Pr, Bu) imines V are obtained, which on hydrolysis give piperidones IV (R = H, R₁ = i-Pr, Bu). When the ß-methoxyketone III (R = H) is heated with 5% sulfuric acid in the presence of mercuric sulfate, chroman-4-one is formed.     

Fragmentation of the unsubstituted carbohydrate units of cardenolide monosides

In the mass spectra of unsubstituted monosides of cardenolide nature are observed the M⁺ peaks, and also, in each case, three characteristic processes of the fragmentation of the carbohydrate unit. The formation of the ions AglOCH=OH⁺ is the most universal property of these compounds. The stability of ions of the type under consideration depends on the nature and position of attachment of the sugar residue and on the number of polar groups in the aglycone. Free-radical polymerization of N-vinylpyrrolidone under the conditions of secondary inhibition

The polymerization of N-vinylpyrrolidone has been studied in the presence of the stable radical 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidinyloxy. It has been shown that at 120°C the polymerization proceeds via the irreversible inhibition mechanism, while, at 60°C, secondary inhibition occurs in the system during the postinduction period. This effect may be used for regulation of the molecular-mass characteristics of polymers.     

A study of the water-soluble proteins of the seeds of the cotton plants Gossypium hirsutum and G. barbadense

It has been shown by electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gel that different enzymes with similar electrophoretic mobilities may be localized in one and the same zone of water-soluble cottonseed proteins. Some zones not stained by the usual protein dyes also possess enzymatic activity. It has been established that the majority of the electrophoretic fractions consist of a series of polypeptides with different molecular weights, mainly of low-molecular-weight nature. The results are given of an investigation of the peroxidase, α-amylase, lipase, NADH-DCPIP oxidoreductase, and NADPH-DCPIP oxidoreductase activities of the water soluble fraction of the proteins of the seeds of the species mentioned.     

Electrophoretic and amino acid compositions of the proteins of maize lines differing in the anthocyan coloration of the seeds

The electrophoretic and amino acid compositions of the proteins of lines of maize differing in the anthocyan coloration of their seeds have been investigated. The molecular masses of the quantitatively main components ranged from 11 to 42 kDa for the albumins and from 15 to 81 kDa for the globulins. Differences between the lines were observed in the levels of components with molecular masses of from 11 to 31 kDa. The amino acid compositions of the zeins of the lines studied were characterized by high levels of leucine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, alanine and serine, and those of the other groups of proteins by high levels of arginine, glutamic acid, and glycine.Institute of Genetics, Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Tashkent, fax (3712) 64 22 30. Synthesis of lepidine and its derivatives from aromatic amines and quaternary salts of Mannich bases

A quaternary salt of 4-(diethylamino)butan-2-one, methyldiethyl-3-ketobutylammonium methyl sulfate, is used as an alkylating agent to synthesize lepidine and 1-phenyllepidine salts. The method gives good yields, under mild conditions, of lepidine and 1-phenyllepidine perchlorate. An intermediate product is isolated, and a reaction mechanism suggested.
