The co-existence concentrations of the isotropic and cholesteric liquid crystalline phases of the semi-flexible rod-like virus fd in aqueous suspension were measured as a function of ionic strength at room temperature. At several ionic strengths the magnetic-field-induced birefringence, which is proportional to the number of particles in a correlation volume Ncorr, was measured for fd concentrations spanning the entire isotropic region. From this data the limiting concentration of stability (spinodal) of the isotropic phase, ρ*, was obtained. The co-existence concentrations and ρ* versus ionic strength compare well with predictions based on the theory of Khokhlov and Semenov, modified to include the effects of charge. A theoretical expression for the magnetic birefringence of persistent polymers was derived and agreed well with the data with the exception that Ncorr at the isotropic to liquid crystal transition was smaller than predicted.  相似文献

After formulation of the various dynamical and kinematical relations connecting the flow quantities with the geometrical parameters of the stream line trajectories, the expressions for the tangent, principal normal and binormal vectors and the curvature and torsion of the stream line have been obtained in-terms of the velocity components, the pressure, the density, the magnetic field and the relaxation variable. This is followed by expressing the equations governing the flow in the intrinsic forms. It has been shown that the non-equilibrium character of the gas decreases the total pressure gradient along the streamlines, but the total pressure remains constant along the binormals and if the stream lines are straight lines, the trajectories of the principal normals lie on the surface of the constant total pressure. Further, the expressions for vorticity components in terms of curvature of the stream line and the velocity gradients along the stream line and their principal normals and binormals have been obtained. Self-consistent wavefunctions are obtained in the HFX Xα model for a free water molecule as well as dimers and trimers. The dimer and trimer results are synthesized to deduce the contribution of the hydrogen bond to the Compton profile of water. This offers a very reasonable explanation for a substantial part of the difference between theoretical calculation on a free water molecule and experiment.  相似文献

Neutron reduced widths Γn0 and Γn1 are reported for about 200 resonances observed in neutron total cross sections of Ca40, 44, Ti48, Cr50, 52, 54, Fe54, 56, Ni58, 60, Sr88, Y89, Sn124, Te130, Ba136, 138, and Pb206, 207, 208, in the energy region 1 to 200 kev. Average parameters Γn0, Γn0D, and Γn(1)D have been derived and the Wigner distribution for local spacings and the Porter-Thomas distribution for reduced widths are verified for the resonances in the even-even nuclei Ca40, Fe56, Ni58, and Ni60. A simple method of area analysis which is less tedious and time consuming than the method reported before in Part III is also described.  相似文献

π+ and π? elastic and inelastic scattering from 18O have been measured at T(π)=164 MeV. Consistent with the results at 230 MeV, it is found that the ratio σ(π?)σ(π+) for the 21+ state is 1.86(16), while for the 31? state it is 0.89(6). These results are interpreted as indicating differences in neutron and proton deformations characterizing the 21+ transition and partial neutron blocking for the 31? transition. Optical model analysis of elastic scattering leads to the conclusion that 〈rn212?〈rp212=0.03(3) fm.  相似文献
