Abstract

The infrared and Raman spectra of dimethyldithiophosphinate anion (CH3)2PS2 were measured and the vibrational modes for the anion complex were assigned. A Normal Coordinate Analysis in the Modified General Valence Force Field (MGVFF) approximation was carried out assuming C2v symmetry. Ab Initio Calculations at RHF and MP2 level were also carried out for the anion geometry as well as for its frequencies, intensities and force constants.

By means of a new Monte Carlo sampling of a grand canonical ensemble, we verify universality for the critical exponents and of two models of lattice trees constrained to be self-avoiding on sites or on bonds. The attrition constants are also obtained. This algorithm, a generalization of that recently proposed by Berretti and Sokal for random walks, appears to optimize the critical slowing down in the scaling region. Systematic and statistical errors are carefully estimated.

We study the interplay between impurity scattering and Coulomb interaction effects in the absorption spectrum of neutral bound magnetoexcitons confined in quantum-ring structures. Impurity scattering breaks the rotational symmetry of the ring system, introducing characteristic features in the optical emission. Signatures of the optical Aharonov–Bohm effect are still present for weak scattering and strong Coulomb screening. Furthermore, an impurity-induced modulation of the absorption strength is present even for a strong impurity potential and low screening. This behavior is likely responsible of recent experimental observations in quantum-ring structures.

We study the statistical properties of time distribution of seismicity in California by means of a new method of analysis, the diffusion entropy. We find that the distribution of time intervals between a large earthquake (the main shock of a given seismic sequence) and the next one does not obey Poisson statistics, as assumed by the current models. We prove that this distribution is an inverse power law with an exponent mu=2.06+/-0.01. We propose the long-range model, reproducing the main properties of the diffusion entropy and describing the seismic triggering mechanisms induced by large earthquakes.

These results extend some results obtained by G. F. Lawler about the intersection properties of simple random walks in Z 4. By using similar arguments, we also get corresponding results for the intersections of Wiener sausages in four dimensions. In particular, a conjecture suggested by M. Aizenman, which describes nonintersection of independent Wiener sausages in R 4, is proven.Partly supported by AvH Foundation.

An interferometric method for measuring the focal length of power-distributed lenses is described. The test lens is illuminated by a regular pitch interferometric pattern produced by a reflective diffraction grating interferometer. In order to measure the focal length, a CCD camera digitizes the image of the pattern magnified by the lens, and fast Fourier transformed to reconstruct the phase modulo 2π along each row. The change in spatial frequency is determined by unwrapping the phase along each row of the digitized imaged pattern. The technique is used for measuring the focal length distribution inside the progression corridor of both positive and negative progressive lenses.
