Interactions between metastable Xe atoms in the afterglow plasma

By measurements of the electron energy distribution function in a Xe afterglow plasma, the rate constants of the binary ionizing collisions between metastable Xe atoms were determined. The value of β₂₂ = (7.3 ± 1) × 10^?10cm³s^?1 satisfactorily agrees with the value for a van der Waals capture.     

Zero order anomaly of dielectric coated gratings

The zeroeth order diffraction efficiency of a three-layer dielectric grating is studied theoretically and experimentally. A sharp resonance anomaly due to the excitation of guided waves is observed, which increases significantly the reflectance of the system. The operation of the structure as a tunable narrow-band wavelength filter in a reflection regime is demonstrated.     

A semiclassical theory of the laser

The kinetic equation for the density matrix is used to study the response of a laser system to a monochromatic electromagnetic standing wave. Steady-state laser operation is studied through joint solution of Maxwell's equations and the equations for the density matrix. Allowances are made for nonuniformities in the radiating medium modulated by the field and for the motion of the radiating particles. Steady-state operating conditions and oscillation thresholds for gas and solid-state lasers are compared.

On the effect of stress on oxidative destruction of polymers. The action of ozone on polyolefines

A promoting effect of tensile stress has been revealed for the rate of oxidation of high- and low-density polyethylene and isotactic polypropylene films with ozone. The degree of oxidation and the presence of overstressed bonds on the sample surface were detected by infrared spectroscopy in transmitted and reflected light. Overstressed bonds on the surface were set up by using various quenching regimes and in the bulk by applying a load. The stress-induced changes in segmental mobility of macromolecules were studied by ESR spectroscopy using a stable nitroxyl radical-probe. Supramolecular structure of the samples was investigated by using birefringence, polarized infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction methods. A substantial difference has been found between the stress and the strain dependences of the rate of oxidation of the polymer films with ozone.     

Inelastic scattering and radiative capture of protons by Cr50 and Cr54

Total yields and angular distributions of gamma rays following the inelastic scattering of protons from Cr⁵⁰ and Cr⁵⁴ have been measured at proton energies below 2.5 MeV. Gamma ray spectra resulting from the proton radiative capture by Cr⁵⁰ and Cr⁵⁴ were obtained. Transitions from most of the Mn⁵¹ and Mn⁵⁵ low-lying levels have been observed. The experimental results are in good agreement with predictions of the statistical compound nucleus theory.
