A comparative qualitative and quantitative analysis has been made by the HPLC method of the sesquiterpene lactones of various fractions obtained from the epigeal pans of three species of tansy,Tanacetum L., growing in Kazakhstan. The results are reported of the interaction of the trans,trans-germacradienolide hanphyllin with m-chloroperbenzoic acid and
with 50% sulfuric acid. This leads to a cyclization reaction with the formation of eudesmanolides: 1β-hydroxy-3-oxo-1,4,5,7α(H),6β(H)-eudesm-11(13)-en-6,12-olide,
ridentin B, and 3β-hydroxy-5,7α(H),6β(H)-eudesma-4(15),11(13)-dien-6,12-olide; and also products of the opening of the lactone
ring as a consequence of transesterification. The structures of the compounds obtained are discussed on the basis of spectral
results (IR, PMR, and mass spectra) and of x-ray structural analysis.

The component composition of the four species Achillea filipendulina, A. sudetica, A. ledebourii, and A. cartilaginea was studied by GC-MS. It was found that the principal components of the essential oil (%) were santolina alcohol (29.1) and
borneol (27.9) for A. filipendulina, linalool (11.8) and caryophyllene (8.9) for A. sudetica, germacrene D (20.55) for A. ledebourii, and α-thujone (26.15) and β-thujone (11.76) for A. cartilaginea. The chemical composition of the essential oils from A. sudetica, A. ledebourii, and A. cartilaginea was studied for the first time.

New phosphorus-containing derivatives of grosshemin were synthesized in 68-70% yield by reacting this guaianolide with dialkylphosphites. Their structures were established by IR, PMR, 13C NMR, and 31P NMR spectroscopies and two-dimensional 1H-1H NMR spectroscopy (COSY). The results are generalized of the results of a study of 109 species of plants of the family Compositae (Asteraceae) growing on the territory of Kazakhstan. The promising nature is shown of the search for biologically active sesquiterpene -lactones among them. Fourteen new compounds of this series belonging to the germacranolides, eudesmanolides, guaianolides, and pseudogermanolides have been isolated and characterized by various methods.
