Describes a series of experiments performed to isolate the RF breakdown mechanisms in the hard tube magnetically insulated transmission line oscillator (MILO) Experiment at the Air Force Phillips Laboratory, Albuquerque, NM. Specifically, several causes of RF breakdown in the region of the vacuum-air interface and the antenna region have been investigated. These causes are X-ray induced electron emission, VUV and visible photoemission of electrons, and breakdown due to large field stresses in the antenna. Each of these mechanisms has the effect of liberating electrons from a surface in a high field region which then are a seed for a breakdown. This paper discusses measurements in the X-ray, VUV, and visible regimes with support from computer simulation. Also, imagery results are shown, which in conjunction with the computer work, point to the presence of high electric field stresses in the antenna, which cause a subsequent breakdown. In particular, X-rays, VUV, visible light, and plasmas do not seem to be the major source of RF breakdown in this tube 相似文献

A systematic analysis of transverse momentum distribution of hadrons produced in ultra-relativistic p + p collisions is presented. We investigate the effective temperature and the entropic index from the non-extensive thermodynamic theory of strong interaction. While cancer now impacts the health and well-being of more of the human population than ever before, the exponential rise in antimicrobial resistant (AMR) bacterial infections means AMR is predicted to become one of the greatest future threats to human health. It is therefore vital that novel therapeutic strategies are developed that can be used in the treatment of both cancer and AMR infections. Whether the target of a therapeutic agent be inside the cell or in the cell membrane, it must either interact with or cross this phospholipid barrier to elicit the desired cellular effect. Here we summarise findings from published research into the phospholipid membrane composition of bacterial and cancer cell lines and biological samples from cancer patients. These data not only highlight key differences in the membrane composition of these biological samples, but also the methods used to elucidate and report the results of this analogous research between the microbial and cancer fields.This review acts as a repository and comparison of cell membrane phospholipid composition data collected from microbial and cancer fields. 相似文献

Bone growth and repair are under the control of biochemical and mechanical signals. Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound (LIPUS) stimulation at 30 mW/cm2 is an established, widely used and FDA approved intervention for accelerating bone healing in fractures and non-unions. Although this LIPUS signal accelerates mineralization and bone regeneration, the actual intensity experienced by the cells at the target site might be lower, due to the possible attenuation caused by the overlying soft tissue. The aim of this study was to investigate whether LIPUS intensities below 30 mW/cm2 are able to provoke phenotypic responses in bone cells. Rat bone marrow stromal cells were cultured under defined conditions and the effect of 2, 15, 30 mW/cm2 and sham treatments were studied at early (cell activation), middle (differentiation into osteogenic cells) and late (biological mineralization) stages of osteogenic differentiation. We observed that not only 30 mW/cm2 but also 2 and 15 mW/cm2, modulated ERK1/2 and p38 intracellular signaling pathways as compared to the sham treatment. After 5 days with daily treatments of 2, 15 and 30 mW/cm2, alkaline phosphatase activity, an early indicator of osteoblast differentiation, increased by 79%, 147% and 209%, respectively, compared to sham, indicating that various intensities of LIPUS were able to initiate osteogenic differentiation. While all LIPUS treatments showed higher mineralization, interestingly, the highest increase of 225% was observed in cells treated with 2 mW/cm2. As the intensity increased to 15 and 30 mW/cm2, the increase in the level of mineralization dropped to 120% and 82%. Our data show that LIPUS intensities lower than the current clinical standard have a positive effect on osteogenic differentiation of rat bone marrow stromal cells. Although Exogen™ at 30 mW/cm2 continues to be effective and should be used as a clinical therapy for fracture healing, if confirmed in vivo, the increased mineralization at lower intensities might be the first step towards redefining the most effective LIPUS intensity for clinical use. 相似文献

The synthesis and characterization of the reagent 2-(5-bromothiazolylazo)-4-chlorophenol and its application in the development of a preconcentration procedure for cobalt determination using flame atomic absorption spectrometry after cloud point extraction is presented. This procedure is based on cobalt complexing and entrapment of the metal chelates into micelles of a surfactant-rich phase of Triton X-114. The preconcentration procedure was optimized by using a response surface methodology through the application of the Box-Behnken matrix. Under optimum conditions, the procedure determined the presence of cobalt with an LOD of 2.8 microg/L and LOQ of 9.3 microg/L. The enrichment factor obtained was 25. The precision was evaluated as the RSD, which was 5.5% for 10 microg/L cobalt and 6.9% for 30 microg/L. The accuracy of the procedure was assessed by comparing the results with those found using inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry. After validation, the procedure was applied to the determination of cobalt in pharmaceutical preparation samples containing cobalamin (vitamin B12). 相似文献

A facile strategy has been developed to synthesize double‐shelled Zn(OH)2 nanoflowers (DNFs) at room temperature. The nanoflowers were generated via conversion of Cu2O nanoparticles (NPs) using ZnCl2 and Na2S2O3 by a simple process. Outward diffusion of the Cu2+, produced by an oxidation process on the surface of NPs, and the inward diffusion of Zn2+ by coordination and migration, eventually lead to a hollow cavity in the inner NPs with a double‐shelled 3D hollow flower shapes. The thickness of the inner and outer shells is estimated to be about 20 nm, and the thickness of nanopetals is about 7 nm. The nanoflowers have large surface areas and excellent adsorption properties. As a proof of potential applications, the DNFs exhibited an excellent ability to remove organic molecules from aqueous solutions. 相似文献

We consider the dynamics of cargo driven by a collection of interacting molecular motors in the context of an asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP). The model is formulated to account for (i) excluded-volume interactions, (ii) the observed asymmetry of the stochastic movement of individual motors and (iii) interactions between motors and cargo. Items (i) and (ii) form the basis of ASEP models and have already been considered to study the behavior of motor density profile [A. Parmeggiani, T. Franosch, E. Frey, Phase Coexistence in driven one-dimensional transport, Phys. Rev. Lett. 90 (2003) 086601-1-086601-4]. Item (iii) is new. It is introduced here as an attempt to describe explicitly the dependence of cargo movement on the dynamics of motors in this context. The steady-state solutions of the model indicate that the system undergoes a phase transition of condensation type as the motor density varies.
