We obtain an essential spectral gap for n-dimensional convex co-compact hyperbolic manifolds with the dimension \({\delta}\) of the limit set close to \({{n-1\over 2}}\). The size of the gap is expressed using the additive energy of stereographic projections of the limit set. This additive energy can in turn be estimated in terms of the constants in Ahlfors–David regularity of the limit set. Our proofs use new microlocal methods, in particular a notion of a fractal uncertainty principle.  相似文献

Truncation and acylation were combined to investigate the broad-spectrum bactericidal and hemolytic peptide S4(1-15). Substitution of up to seven residues with dodecanoic acid (C(12)) gradually led to specific antipseudomonal activity: out of 40 bacterial strains tested in vitro, C(12)-S4(8-15) displayed similar minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) as S4(1-15) against Pseudomonas aeruginosa sp. (identical MIC(90)) but was practically inactive against most other bacteria or erythrocytes. Surface plasmon resonance and isothermal titration calorimetry experiments revealed the binding properties of S4(1-15) to be consistent with its nonselective activities, while discriminative activities of C(12)-S4(8-15) correlated with high binding affinity to a membrane containing pseudomonal lipopolysaccharides and with lower affinities to membranes containing nonpseudomonal lipopolysaccharides or cholesterol. Various mechanistic studies failed to detect significant differences in secondary structure, bactericidal kinetics, or ability to perturb the cytoplasmic membrane, pointing to a similar mode of action.  相似文献

We consider backward stochastic differential equations (BSDEs) with a particular quadratic generator and study the behaviour of their solutions when the probability measure is changed, the filtration is shrunk, or the underlying probability space is transformed. Our main results are upper bounds for the solutions of the original BSDEs in terms of solutions to other BSDEs which are easier to solve. We illustrate our results by applying them to exponential utility indifference valuation in a multidimensional It? process setting.  相似文献

We propose a new method to define theories of random geometries, using an explicit and simple map between metrics and large hermitian matrices. We outline some of the many possible applications of the formalism. For example, a background-independent measure on the space of metrics can be easily constructed from first principles. Our framework suggests the relevance of a new gravitational effective action and we show that it occurs when coupling the massive scalar field to two-dimensional gravity. This yields new types of quantum gravity models generalizing the standard Liouville case.  相似文献

The swelling of poly(acrylamide) (PAAm) gels and the osmotic pressure of linear PAAm in aqueous solutions were predominantly affected by anion type and increased according to the lyotropic series ranking of sodium halide anions: F? < (H2O) < Cl? < Br? < I?. The osmotic pressure of PAAm in all examined salt solutions followed the scaling theory, with an exponent of 2.3 ± 0.1. In solutions of a sodium halide series, the value of the pre‐exponential factor seemed to depend on salt concentration, anion radius, and the apparent “anionic‐portion radius” of the water molecule. This radius, extracted from the literature data, marks a transition point of the anion radius effect. Larger anions increase the osmotic pressure of PAAm more significantly as their concentration increases and vice versa. The effects of the anions on the osmotic pressure of PAAm are related to their preferential interactions with the polymer. Iodide, which increased the osmotic pressure of PAAm with respect to its value in pure water, seemed to preferentially adsorb onto the polymer with a binding constant of Kb = 9.7 ± 2.0 M?1 determined by isothermal titration microcalorimetry. However, fluoride, which decreased the osmotic pressure, was preferentially repulsed. The mechanisms of attraction and repulsion were attributed to ion‐water‐polymer interactions and the solvent quality of the hydrated ions. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cross-national research studies such as the Program for International Student Assessment and the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) have contributed much to our understandings regarding country differences in student achievement in mathematics, especially at the primary (elementary) and lower secondary (middle school) levels. TIMSS, especially, has demonstrated the central role that the concept of opportunity to learn plays in understanding cross-national differences in achievement Schmidt et al., (Why schools matter: A cross-national comparison of curriculum and learning  2001). The curricular expectations of a nation and the actual content exposure that is delivered to students by teachers were found to be among the most salient features of schooling related to academic performance. The other feature that emerges in these studies is the importance of the teacher. The professional competence of the teacher which includes substantive knowledge regarding formal mathematics, mathematics pedagogy and general pedagogy is suggested as being significant—not just in understanding cross-national differences but also in other studies as well (Hill et al. in Am Educ Res J 42(2):371–406, 2005). Mathematics Teaching in the 21st Century (MT21) is a small, six-country study that collected data on future lower secondary teachers in their last year of preparation. One of the findings noted in the first report of that study was that the opportunities future teachers experienced as part of their formal education varied across the six countries (Schmidt et al. in The preparation gap: Teacher education for middle school mathematics in six countries, 2007). This variation in opportunity to learn (OTL) existed in course work related to formal mathematics, mathematics pedagogy and general pedagogy. It appears from these initial results that OTL not only is important in understanding K-12 student learning but it is also likely important in understanding the knowledge base of the teachers who teach them which then has the potential to influence student learning as well. This study using the same MT21 data examines in greater detail the configuration of the educational opportunities future teachers had during their teacher education in some 34 institutions across the six countries.  相似文献

On any quaternionic manifold of dimension greater than 4 a class of plurisubharmonic functions (or, rather, sections of an appropriate line bundle) is introduced. Then a Monge-Ampère operator is defined. It is shown that it satisfies a version of the theorems of A. D. Alexandrov and Chern–Levine–Nirenberg. For more special classes of manifolds analogous results were previously obtained in Alesker (2003) [1] for the flat quaternionic space HnHn and in Alesker and Verbitsky (2006) [5] for hypercomplex manifolds. One of the new technical aspects of the present paper is the systematic use of the Baston differential operators, for which we also prove a new multiplicativity property.  相似文献
