Conductive liquid crystalline compounds having a piperazine structure

New conductive thermotropic liquid crystalline materials having a piperazine ring in the central core: 1-[4-(9-decenyloxy)phenyl]-4-alkylpiperazines ( 6 ) were synthesized. The mesomorphic behaviours of these compounds and their conductivity in the liquid crystal phase were measured. The principal features of these compounds are to exhibit a smectic B phase around room temperature (for example 6 : Cr 50 SmB 81 I, °C) and to exhibit a large dark current (6d: 430 μA cm^-2, applied voltage 20 V, at 70°C) in the smectic B phase.     

Disk Noise Measurement System for Optical Disks

We developed a system to measure disk noise as a function of both radial and angular position. In order to obtain an accurate disk noise measurement, crosstalk and intersymbol interference were avoided by recording regularly repeating pit patterns and the influence of electronic and laser noise was removed by averaging techniques. We found the system’s mapping ability and its high sensitivity to be very useful in investigating disk noise phenomena in the mastering process. We used the system to assess the accuracy and reproducibility of the photopolymerization replication and Al vapor deposition processes. Also, we investigated the choice of photoresist and found that photoresists with the combination of the narrowest molecular weight distribution and the highest photo-active compound content resulted in the lowest disk noise levels. Our system can, in principle, be adapted to evaluate magneto-optical and phase change disks.     

Polymer electrolytes plasticized with hyperbranched polymer for lithium polymer batteries

Hyperbranched polymers (HBPs) with different terminal groups and different ethylene oxide (EO) chain lengths were prepared, and the influence of the HBP structures including molecular weights and molecular weight distribution on the ionic conductivity and the mechanical property of the composite polymer electrolytes composed of poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO), HBP, BaTiO₃ as a ceramic filler, and LiN(CF₃SO₂)₂ as a lithium salt were investigated. It was found that the molecular weights of the HBP do not affect significantly the ionic conductivity, but the molecular weight distribution might affect it, and also further branching at the terminals of the HBP led to a decrease in the ionic conductivity. The HBP with longer EO chain length was effective for enhancement of the ionic conductivity in comparison with the HBP with shorter one. The increase in cross-linkable groups (acryloyl group) at the terminals of the HBP improved the tensile strength, but caused the ionic conductivity to decrease. Loosely cross-linked composite polymer electrolyte showed higher ionic conductivity and higher tensile strength than no cross-linked one. Yb (Ba, Sr)2Cu4O8: a “124” phase superconductor with a reduced unit cell volume

Yb(Ba_1−xSr_x)₂Cu₄O₈ (0.1x0.3) superconductors of the YBa₂Cu₄O₈(“124”) structure were successfully synthesized using an O₂-hot-isostaticc-pressing (HIP) technique. The samples were characterized with respect to the crystal structure and superconducting properties. The lattice parameters of the samples decreased as the substitution of Sr for Ba proceeded. The superconducting transition temperatures of all the Yb-“124” samples were more or less the same, being around 80 K.     

Some fatty acids having an O-heterocycle in their terminal positions. I. ω-(3-Chromonyl)alkanoic acids

Some ω-(3-chromonyl)alkanoic acid derivatives, 1a and 2a , n = 4, 5; 3a, 4a and 5a , n = 2-6, were synthesized by cyclization of corresponding methyl ω-(2-hydroxybenzoyl)alkanoates 7b or ethyl ω-(2,4-dihydroxybenzoyl)alkanoates 8b with N,N-dimethylformamide-dimethyl acetal or acetic anhydride-DBU followed by hydrolysis.
