Functional imaging studies of speech perception in the human brain have identified a key role for auditory association areas in the temporal lobes (bilateral superior temporal gyri and sulci) in the perceptual processing of the speech signal. This is extended to suggest some functional specialization within this bilateral system, with a particular role for the left anterior superior temporal sulcus (STS) in processing intelligible speech. In the current study, noise-vocoded speech was used to vary the intelligibility of speech parametrically. This replicated the finding of a selective response to intelligibility in speech in the left anterior superior temporal sulcus, in contrast to the posterior superior temporal sulcus, which showed a response profile insensitive to the degree of intelligibility. These results are related to theories of functional organization in the human auditory system, which have indicated that there are separate processing streams, with different functional roles, running anterior and posterior to primary auditory cortex. Specifically, it is suggested that an anterior stream processing intelligibility can be distinguished from a posterior stream associated with transient representations, important in spoken repetition and working memory. 相似文献

Theory and experiment are compared for Raman intensities near continuous structural phase transitions. Situations in which the order parameter couples linearly to light or quadratically are considered. Both cases are easily analyzed for the soft modes in ferroelastic LnP5O14 (Ln = La, Pr, Nd, Tb). The trace polarizability tensor yields β = 0.49 ± 0.02; off-diagonal terms give γ’ = 1.16 ± 0.15 and γ = 1.07 ± 0.10. After listening to a sound that is presented repeatedly, subjects report hearing different transforms of the original sound. The frequency of reported transforms is a sensitive index of some speech disorders as well as cognitive flexibility in aging. In this paper, we propose and investigate quantitative measures that characterize the dynamics of this phenomenon, known as the verbal transformation effect. In particular, we show that the distribution of the dwell time, the time spent perceiving a string of a given phonemic form before switching to another form, obeys a power law for normal subjects with an exponent valued between 1 and 2. This result suggests that within this paradigm there is no characteristic time scale for the perceptual process. Additionally, we analyze the correlation properties of the transforms. We suggest that the complexity measures and techniques introduced here might be useful diagnostic tools for a number of speech and cognitive disorders. (c) 1995 American Institute of Physics. 相似文献

In geophysics, spectrum analysis of surface waves (SASW) refers to a noninvasive method for soil characterization. However, the term spectrum analysis can be used in a wider sense to mean a method for determining and identifying various modes of seismic surface waves and their properties such as velocity, polarization, etc. Surface waves travel along the free boundary of a medium and can be easily detected with a transducer placed on the free surface of the boundary. A new method based on vector processing of space-time data obtained from an array of triaxial sensors is proposed to produce high-resolution, multimodal spectra from surface waves. Then individual modes can be identified in the spectrum and reconstructed in the space-time domain; also, reflected waves can be separated easily from forward waves in the spectrum domain. This new SASW method can be used for detecting and locating landmines by analyzing the reflected waves for resonance. In this paper we describe a semi-empirical quantum method for predicting the wavelength of maximum fluorescence excitation and emission for several known and new maleimide derivatives. All new maleimides, containing a N-Benzyl attachment, were successfully synthesised via a tandem Suzuki reaction with aryl boronic acids containing either an electron donating, electron withdrawing functional groups. Absorption and emission spectra calculated using the semi-empirical AM1 method with excited state ZINDO calculations proved more reliable than either Hartree-Fock Configuration interaction or time dependent density functional methods. Calculated absorption and emission wavelengths were compared with 26 experimental spectra from known or newly synthesised maleimides and found to have provide reasonable predictions, with an average deviation of less the 6% for absorption maxima and less than 4% for emission peaks. The described method provides a strong benchmark for the accuracy that can be expected from theoretical predictions of fluorescence spectra. 相似文献

Experimental results are presented for large amplitude, forced motion of damped, three-layer beams. The beams are constructed with a viscoelastic material constrained between stiff, elastic, outer layers. The sandwich beam is axially restrained; therefore large amplitude displacements cause non-linear response. When the beam is forced at one-half of the lateral vibration resonant frequency, superharmonic response occurs. The experiment is briefly described and frequency response characteristics, spatial shapes and a measure of superharmonic response are presented. The gas-phase reaction between carbon monoxide and oxygen (in the presence of small amounts of hydrogen) shows bistability and oscillatory behavior. Typically, the oscillatory ignition has a period-1 relaxation waveform. The limit cycle is born at a saddle-node loop and terminates via a supercritical Hopf bifurcation. For a mean residence time of 8 s there is a period-doubling to a period-2 solution followed by period-halving to quasisinusoidal period-1 oscillations. At longer residence times, more period-doublings forming a full cascade to chaos with subsequent periodic windows are observed. One design for three-dimensional multimicrophone probes is the four-microphone orthogonal design consisting of one microphone at an origin position with the other three microphones equally spaced along the three coordinate axes. Several distinct processing methods have been suggested for the estimation of active acoustic intensity with the orthogonal probe; however, the relative merits of each method have not been thoroughly studied. This comparative study is an investigation of the errors associated with each method. Considered are orthogonal probes consisting of matched point sensor microphones both freely suspended and embedded on the surface of a rigid sphere. Results are given for propagating plane-wave fields for all angles of incidence. It is shown that the lowest error for intensity magnitude results from having the microphones in a sphere and using just one microphone for the pressure estimate. For intensity direction, the lowest error results from having the microphones in a sphere and using Taylor approximations to estimate the particle velocity and pressure. 相似文献

The spectral line strengths in the v2 band of H2CO (segments spanning 1720-) have been determined relative to two sets of spectral line groups in the v1 and v5 band, using tunable diode laser spectroscopy. Simultaneous detection using a dual-diode instrument with a absorption cell was employed to assure identical H2CO column density for the two spectral regions. The results in the selected regions of this study are in good agreement with the line positions and the relative intensities specified in an unpublished complete line listing for the v2 band prepared by Linda Brown (see full text for reference).
