Mimicking primary processes in photosynthesis—covalently linked porphyrin quinones

Porphyrin quinones (P-Qs), covalently linked via different aliphatic bridges, have been synthesized and studies in their (porphyrin) cationic and (semiquinone) anionic radical states by EPR, ENDOR and TRIPLE resonance techniques. Electron transfer (ET) from the porphyrin donor to the quinone acceptor could be observed by time-resolved picosecond fluorescence spectroscopy (singlet ET) and by time-resolved EPR spectroscopy (triplet ET) in isotropic fluid solution and in anisotropic media (liquid crystals and reversed micelles). Steady-state in situ photoexcitation of P-Qs in CTAB cationic reversed micelles yielded the corresponding semiquinone radical anions. In TRITON X-100 reversed micelles both the radical cation of the porphyrin and the radical anion of the semiquinone could be detected, which occured in complete emission. In covalently linked porphyrin flavins ET from the photoexcited porphyrin fragment to the flavin and, in addition, energy transfer from the photoexcited flavin to the porphyrin could be observed.

In the reaction of Cp₂WGl₂ with Li[Si(SiMe₃)₃] the dihydrid tungstenocene derivative [(Me₃Si)₃SiC₅H₄]WH₂ (3) is formed with a 56% yield. 3 crystallizes in space group P$\text{1}$, with a 918.0(4), b 1580.9(4), c 1621.2(7) pm, α 117.63(2), β 89.95(3), γ 94.39(3)° at ?40° C. The dihedral angle between the Cp planes is 140.9°.     

Selex: An expert system for evaluating published data on selenium in foods

Providing consistent and objective evaluation of published data on nutrient composition is critical for planning future analytical studies and for effective use of data. Based on a commercial expert system shell, a computer system of approximately 200 rules has been created to evaluate and ratre quantitatively published data on selenium in foods. The evaluation scheme uses five general categories for its rule-making process: number of samples, analytical method, sample handling, sampling plan, and analytical quality control. For each selenium value to be evaluted, rating ar assigned in each category by the expert system based on input which is derived from the information reportedin a given paper. A quality index, which is derived from the ratings, is a measure of the reliability of a given selenium value over all categories for a given study. The concepts used in developing SELEX have the potential of establishing criteria for evaluation of proposed analytical methods prior to their publication.     

Chemical studies of marine invertebrates—XXVIII: Diterpenes from clavularia inflata (coelenterata,octocorallia, stolonifera)

The presence of terpenoids in the order Stolonifera has been established by the isolation of three novel diterpenes, 1α,4β-dihydroxyclavular-17-ene (1), 4β-hydroxyclavulara-1(15),17-diene (2) and 3α.4β-dihydroxyclavulara-1(15), 17-diene (3) from Clavularia infiata. The structure of 1 has been determined by X-ray diffraction analysis and those of 2 and 3 by chemical intercorrelation with 1.     

Solvolytic behavior of p-dimethylamino-α-bromostyrene in water solutions

Nmr and UV studies show that $\text{p}$-dimethylamino-$\text{α}$-bromostyrene, I, undergoes S_Nl reaction in H₂O and HClO₄ (^kS_Nl = 6 × 10^?1sec.^?1 at 25°). The vinyl cation has an extraordinary selectivity for capture by aromatic amines relative to H₂O, including I itself to give the dimer II.     

Stereoselectivity of the Radical Reductive Alkylation of Enamines: Importance of the Allylic 1,3-Strain Model

Radical addition to enamines using Bu₃SnH as reducing agent are reported (Schemes 2 and 4). The diastereoselectivity of these reactions was examined in different systems (Tables 1 and 2). Enamines derived from cyclic ketones such as cyclohexanone were alkylated with high diastereoselectivity with preferential formation of the cis-disubstituted cycloalkanes. In acyclic systems such as enamines derived from propiophenone and diethyl ketone, moderate to high stereoselectivities were observed in the H-abstraction step. A model based principally on minimization of allylic 1,3-strain (A^1,3 strain) was deduced from the experimental results and semi-empirical (AM1) calculations.     

From supramolecular block copolymers to advanced nano-objects

The formation of asymmetric bis-complexes, based on terpyridine ligands and ruthenium ions, is described as a powerful tool for the self-assembly of polymer blocks end-functionalized with terpyridine units. This is illustrated in this contribution for the synthesis of amphiphilic metallo-supramolecular block copolymers, which are further used to produce aqueous micelles. Finally, the reversibility of the supramolecular bond opens new avenues for the preparation and manipulation of these nano-objects.     

Die Verfeinerung der Kristallstruktur eines metamorphen Orthopyroxens

The atomic coordinates, the isotropic temperature factors and the site-occupancy factors of a metamorphic orthopyroxene Mg_1,56Fe_0,39Ca_0,05Si₂O₆ have been refined by the least-squares method using 1373 crystallographically independent reflections. Three-dimensional intensity data have been determined by integrated Weissenberg photographs. The final residual is 0.11. The site-occupancy factors M 1 = Mg_0,968 + Fe_0,032 and M 2 = Mg_0,589 + Fe_0,361 + Ca_0,050 reflect a high degree of order in the intracrystalline Mg, Fe distribution. The M 1, M 2 octahedra, the Si tetrahedra and the dependence of the means interatomic distances M  O on the Mg. Fe site occupancy are the subject of discussions.
