Tetrapeptides induce selective recognition for G-quadruplexes when conjugated to a DNA-binding platform

3,6-Bis-peptide acridine and acridone conjugates have been designed and synthesised to selectively interact with G-quadruplex DNA. The ligand properties are peptide sequence dependent, the highest discrimination being obtained with the FRHR tetrapeptide (up to >50-fold specificity). Molecular modeling studies have helped us rationalise the data and suggest that human telomeric quadruplex DNA can readily accommodate tetrapeptides, and furthermore that FRHR contributes to stabilization of the complex by non-bonded interactions within the TTA loop pockets of the quadruplex. These studies indicate that targeting distinct features of a G-quadruplex with hybrid molecules is a promising strategy for discriminating between quadruplex and duplex DNA.     

Charge Transport in Mesomorphic Phthalocyanines Studied by Pulse-Radiolysis Time-Resolved Microwave Conductivity

The pulse-radiolysis time-resolved microwave conductivity (PR-TRMC) technique has been used to obtain information on the transport of charge within columnarly stacked, peripherally octaalkoxy-substituted phthalocyanines. Data are presented on the one-dimensional, intracolumnar charge mobility and on the timescale of quasi-two-dimensional intercolumnar electron tunnelling. Particular attention is paid to materials that are liquid-crystalline at room temperature, because of their potential technological importance in optoelectric charge transport layers and molecular semiconductor devices. The relevance of the data to channeled charge transport in aligned thin layers is discussed.     

A high performance liquid chromatographic method for the screening of 17 diuretics in human urine

A simple and adequate HPLC method was developed for screening of human urine for the following 17 diuretic drugs: acetazolamide, bendrofluazide, bumetanide, canrenoic acid, chlorothiazide, chlorthalidone, clopamide, epitizide, etacrynic acid, furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide, indapamide, mefruside, piretanide, spironolactone, torasemide, and triamterene. The assay involves extraction from two 2 mL urine samples with ethyl acetate at pH = 5, washing with a phosphate buffer at pH = 6 and analysis by HPLC using a reversed phase C18 column and ultraviolet detection with a diode array detector for all drugs (except triamterene) using two eluents consisting of water, triethylamine, phosphoric acid and acetonitrile at different ratios and different pH values. Triamterene is determined by direct injection of diluted urine onto the column and is measured by fluorescence detection. The recoveries of the diuretic drugs were determined at two different concentrations and ranged from 43–110% (median: 87%) which is sufficient to detect abuse of these drugs. Phase singularities of the coherence functions in Young's interference pattern

We analyze the coherence properties of a partially coherent field emerging from two pinholes in an opaque screen and show that the spectral degree of coherence possesses phase singularities on certain surfaces in the region of superposition. To our knowledge, this is the first illustration of the singular behavior of the spectral degree of coherence, and the results extend the field of singular optics to the study of phase singularities of correlation functions.
