Silicone rubber is a frequently used biomaterial in biomedical devices and implants, yet highly prone to microbial adhesion and the development of a biomaterial-centered infection. Effective coating of silicone rubber to discourage microbial adhesion has thus far been impossible due to the hydrophobic character of its surface, surface deterioration upon treatment and instability of coatings under physiological conditions. Here we present a method to successfully grow polyacrylamide (PAAm) brushes from silicone rubber surfaces after removal of low molecular weight organic molecules (LMWOM), such as silane oligomers. PAAm brush coating did not cause any surface deterioration and discouraged microbial adhesion, even after 1-month exposure to physiological fluids. The method presented opens many new avenues for the use of silicone rubber as a biomaterial, without the risk of developing a biomaterial-centered infection.  相似文献

Using a chemical cross-linking procedure, surface-grafted polyglutamate films with a permanently perpendicular helix orientation were prepared. A surface-grafted alpha-helical polyglutamate film containing polymerizable side groups was synthesized by ring-opening terpolymerization of 50 molar% gamma-methyl-L-glutamate N-carboxyanhydride (NCA), 30% gamma-stearyl-L-glutamate NCA and 20% gamma-4-vinylbenzyl-L-glutamate NCA initiated from a silicon substrate functionalized with primary amino groups. The average tilt angle of the end-grafted helices in this film is approximately 66 degrees , indicating a nearly parallel helix orientation with respect to the substrate surface. After swelling of the grafted terpolyglutamate film in stearyl methacrylate and subsequent radical cross-linking, the average helix tilt angle decreases to about 11 degrees, indicating an almost perpendicular helix orientation. The film thickness increases accordingly from 151 A before to approximately 390 A after cross-linking. Extensive solvent treatment of the cross-linked film shows that the perpendicular helix orientation is permanent.  相似文献

The solar erythemal UV irradiances through human hair and the protection from UV provided by human head hair have been investigated for a solar zenith angle (SZA) range of 17–51° for the conditions of a head upright in full sun, a head upright in shade and a head in full sun tilted toward the sun. The two hair lengths investigated were 49.1 ± 7.1 mm for the short type and 109.5 ± 5.5 mm for the long type. For the head upright in full sun, the irradiances through the hair ranged from 0.75 to 1.4 SED h−1 for SZA <25° and <0.6 SED h−1 in shade. The ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) ranged from approximately 5 to 17 in full sun, with the UPF increasing with higher SZA. The longer hair provided a lower UPF than the shorter hair and for the head oriented toward the sun, there was a marginally lower UPF than for the upright head. This research shows that the UV exposure limits to the scalp through hair can be exceeded within short timeframes and provides important information to assist employers to comply with Workplace Health and Safety legislation.  相似文献

A nonhomogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) plays an important role in a variety of applications as reliability of repairable systems, software reliability and actuarial studies. An NHPP is characterized by its intensity function m(t), which provides information on the time-dependent nature of the reliability of the system. Various intensity functions, which describe different behavior (from reliability decay to reliability growth along with monotonicity, convexity or concavity), have been suggested for NHPP’s for modeling repairable systems. Perhaps one of the most frequently utilized NHPP is the power lawprocess (PLP) in which m(t) is a power function of t. Inthis studywe present a general method for constructing new intensity functions for NHPP’s yielding new classes of NHPP’s. This method utilizes certain operators L n , n ∈ N0, acting on some suitable functions L 0 = f (termed base functions). We call these classesOBIF’s (operator-based intensity functions). These classes are represented in terms of three parameters of which one is an indexing parameter n ∈ N0 and two others are scale and shape parameters. The fact that n ∈ N0 is also a parameter provides a flexibility in the choice of the appropriate statistical model for NHPP’s data. In particular, we consider the exponential operator acting on the PLP intensity function f and realize that L n ’s, n ≥ 2, inherit properties similar to those of L 1 (convexity and concavity) and thus are suitable for modelling bathtub data. We also consider a more comprehensive treatment of OBIF classes where both, the operator and base functions, are general. All of the introduced operators are demonstrated with illustrative examples.  相似文献

A population of items is said to be “group-testable”, (i) if the items can be classified as “good” and “bad”, and (ii) if it is possible to carry out a simultaneous test on a batch of items with two possible outcomes: “Success” (indicating that all items in the batch are good) or “failure” (indicating a contaminated batch). In this paper, we assume that the items to be tested arrive at the group-testing centre according to a Poisson process and are served (i.e., group-tested) in batches by one server. The service time distribution is general but it depends on the batch size being tested. These assumptions give rise to the bulk queueing model M/G(m,M)/1, where m and M(>m) are the decision variables where each batch size can be between m and M. We develop the generating function for the steady-state probabilities of the embedded Markov chain. We then consider a more realistic finite state version of the problem where the testing centre has a finite capacity and present an expected profit objective function. We compute the optimal values of the decision variables (mM) that maximize the expected profit. For a special case of the problem, we determine the optimal decision explicitly in terms of the Lambert function.  相似文献

We analyze the coherence properties of a partially coherent field emerging from two pinholes in an opaque screen and show that the spectral degree of coherence possesses phase singularities on certain surfaces in the region of superposition. To our knowledge, this is the first illustration of the singular behavior of the spectral degree of coherence, and the results extend the field of singular optics to the study of phase singularities of correlation functions.  相似文献

Background  

In the adult hippocampus, the granule cell layer of the dentate gyrus is a heterogeneous structure formed by neurons of different ages, morphologies and electrophysiological properties. Retroviral vectors have been extensively used to transduce cells of the granule cell layer and study their inherent properties in an intact brain environment. In addition, lentivirus-based vectors have been used to deliver transgenes to replicative and non-replicative cells as well, such as post mitotic neurons of the CNS. However, only few studies have been dedicated to address the applicability of these widespread used vectors to hippocampal cells in vivo. Therefore, the aim of this study was to extensively characterize the cell types that are effectively transduced in vivo by VSVg-pseudotyped lentivirus-based vectors in the hippocampus dentate gyrus.  相似文献
