Growth of large La2−xSrxCuO4 single crystals using tilting-mirror-type infrared heating image furnace

Large single crystals of La_2−xSr_xCuO₄ (LSCO) high-T_c superconductors were grown by the infrared heating floating zone (IR-FZ) method using a tilting-mirror-type image furnace. The maximum diameter of the LSCO crystals increased to 10 mm in the tilting-mirror-type image furnace from 6 mm in the conventional image furnace. CuO rich feeds were required for the crystal growth using the tilting-mirror-type image furnace to compensate for the lack of CuO caused by the significant evaporation of CuO during the growth. The evaporation of CuO was affected by the tilting angle of the mirrors of the image furnace and by feed diameter. The optimized growth conditions were as follows: mirror tilting angle, 20°; feed diameter, 10 mm∅; and feed composition 50.7 mol% CuO.     

Absolute configuration of pterocidin,a potent inhibitor of tumor cell invasion from a marine-derived Streptomyces

During the course of screening natural products for the inhibitors of tumor cell invasion, pterocidin, a linear polyketide with a δ-lactone terminus, was rediscovered from a Streptomyces strain of a marine sediment-origin. A series of J-based configuration analyses and NOESY analysis, coupled with chemical derivatization and chiral anisotropy analysis, established the absolute stereochemistry of five asymmetric centers in this compound.     

Organometallic Molecular Wires with Thioacetylene Backbones,trans-{RS-(C≡C)n}2Ru(phosphine)4: High Conductance through Non-Aromatic Bridging Linkers

In this work, the design, synthesis, and single-molecule conductance of ethynyl- and butadiynyl-ruthenium molecular wires with thioether anchor groups [RS=n-C₆H₁₃S, p-tert-Bu−C₆H₄S), trans-{RS−(C≡C)_n}₂Ru(dppe)₂ (n=1 ( 1^R ), 2 ( 2^R ); dppe: 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) and trans-(n-C₆H₁₃S−C≡C)₂Ru{P(OMe)₃}₄ 3^hex ] are reported. Scanning tunneling microscope break-junction study has revealed conductance of the organometallic molecular wires with the thioacetylene backbones higher than that of the related organometallic wires having arylethynylruthenium linkages with the sulfur anchor groups, trans-{p-MeS−C₆H₄-(C≡C)_n}₂Ru(phosphine)₄ 4 ⁿ (n=1, 2) and trans-(Th−C≡C)₂Ru(phosphine)₄ 5 (Th=3-thienyl). It should be noted that the molecular junctions constructed from the butadiynyl wire 2^R , trans-{ Au −RS−(C≡C)₂}₂Ru(dppe)₂ ( Au : gold metal electrode), show conductance comparable to that of the covalently linked polyynyl wire with the similar molecular length, trans-{ Au −(C≡C)₃}₂Ru(dppe)₂ 6³ . The DFT non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) study supports the highly conducting nature of the thioacetylene molecular wires through HOMO orbitals.     

Jet ejection from droplets near the Leidenfrost temperature

Abstract  

Droplets impinging on a hot surface that is near the Leidenfrost temperature were experimentally investigated. Ejection of jets from the top of the droplet was observed during the transient interaction between the droplet and a hot wall. We term this phenomenon jet ejection from droplets. When the bottom of the droplet initially impacts the hot surface, a jet is to be ejected from the top of the droplet. The jet ejection occurred only at low impact velocities and around the wetting limit temperature. It was not observed when droplets were dropped from large heights or when the surface was at a high temperature.     

Polytopal estimate of Mirkovi?–Vilonen polytopes lying in a Demazure crystal

In this paper, we give a polytopal estimate of Mirkovi?–Vilonen polytopes lying in a Demazure crystal in terms of Minkowski sums of extremal Mirkovi?–Vilonen polytopes. As an immediate consequence of this result, we provide a necessary (but not sufficient) polytopal condition for a Mirkovi?–Vilonen polytope to lie in a Demazure crystal.
