Interrogation of fiber-Bragg-grating temperature and strain sensors with a temperature-stabilized VCSEL

The interrogation of fiber-Bragg-grating (FBG) sensors using a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) is discussed. A long-wavelength (1.54 μm) VCSEL was used as a wavelength-tunable source by variation in the current. Temperature stabilization was performed with a thermoelectric device. Characteristics of temperature and strain sensing were investigated. FBGs with different reflectivities were compared. For temperature sensing, the root-mean-square error in the measurement was reduced to 1/3 that without temperature stabilization. The dependence of the measurement error on the reflectivities of the FBGs was investigated. The measurement error was larger for FBGs with lower reflectivities in both temperature and strain sensing. Improvement on the sensing with low-reflectivity FBGs is discussed.

Discovery of radioactive silver (110mAg) in spiders and other fauna in the terrestrial environment after the meltdown of Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant

Six months after the explosion of TEPCO’s Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, radioactive silver (^110mAg), was detected in concentrations of 3754 Bq/kg in Nephila clavata (the orb-web spider; Joro-gumo in Japanese) collected at Nimaibashi, Iitate village in Fukushima Prefecture, whereas ^110mAg in the soil was 43.1 Bq/kg. A survey of 35 faunal species in the terrestrial environment during the 3.5 years after the accident showed that most of Anthropoda had two orders higher ^110mAg in their tissues than soils, although silver is not an essential element for their life. However, tracing of the activity of ^110mAg detected in spider Atypus karschi collected regularly at a fixed location showed that it declined much faster than the physical half-life. These results suggest that ^110mAg was at once biologically concentrated by faunal species, especially Arthropoda, through food chain. The factors affecting the subsequent rapid decline of ^110mAg concentration in faunal species are discussed.     

Operating Limits for Stable Growth of Silicon Fibers with Diameter Less Than 150 μm by Modified μ-PD Method

The μ-PD method originally developed for oxide crystals has been modified and applied for filamentary silicon crystal growth. Our main modification of μ-PD method is concerned with an arrangement of melt permeable feeder which is inserted into the nozzle. The feeder finishes by a sharp tip the diameter of which (is almost the same as that of the desired semiconductor fiber, i.e., less than 150 μm. Silicon fibers were grown from the small liquid pool at the end of the feeder. Three types of crucible-die arrangement were designed and tested. The best results were obtained with the help of inclined insert made of graphite fibers because of its ability to quench oscillations and longer operation life. Fiber crystals, 100 μm in diameter and 70 mm in length, have been grown successfully. Small meniscus stability, operating limits of μ-PD method and silicon carbide formation during the growth process are discussed.     

NMR studies on the ligand exchange reactions between diaryl tellurides and phenyllithium: Detection of hypervalent triaryl tellurium ate complexes

Diaryl tellurides undergo rapid ligand exchange and disproportionation reactions on treatment with phenyllithium at −78°C. Triarylteliuranes [10-Te-3(C₃)]⁻ Li⁺ were identified as discrete intermediates during the reactions by ¹²⁵Te, ¹H, ¹³C, and CH-COSY NMR studies.
