An efficient two-step synthesis of 3-allylindoles

A two-step synthetic sequence for an efficient synthesis of 3-allylindoles is described.     

Synthesis,characterization, DNA cleavage and in vitro antimicrobial activities of copper(II) complexes of Schiff bases containing a 2,4-disubstituted thiazole

Six Cu(II) complexes of Schiff base ligands of arylidene-2-(4-(4-bromo/methoxy-phenyl)thiazol-2-yl) hydrazines have been synthesized, characterized and screened for DNA cleavage and antimicrobial activities. The chemical structures of the complexes were deduced by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. Elemental analyses indicated that the stoichiometry of the complexes is CuL₂ (L = Schiff base ligand). The DNA cleavage activities of the complexes were evaluated by agarose gel electrophoresis in the presence and absence of oxidant (H₂O₂) and free radical scavenger (DMSO). All the six complexes showed significant nuclease activity in the presence of H₂O₂, and two of the complexes showed moderate nuclease activity even in the absence of oxidant. The complexes did not show nuclease activity in the presence of free radical scavenger. The compounds were tested for activity against selected bacteria and fungi.     

Effect of ethanolic extract of Rubia peregrina L. (Rubiaceae) on monoamine-mediated behaviour

In the traditional system of medicine in Sardinia, Rubia peregrina (RP) is reported as an aphrodisiac herb. Since aphrodisiacs may also have dopaminergic activity, and there can be a reciprocal relationship between dopaminergic and serotonergic functions in the central nervous system, the aim here was to study the effect of the ethanolic extract of the aerial parts of R. peregrina on monoamine-mediated behaviour. Synthesis of fused bicyclic systems with nitrogen atom at the bridgehead, including indolizidines and quinolizidines

Monocyclic as well as fused bicyclic systems with a nitrogen 10 atom at the bridgehead, including indolizidines and quinolizidines, can be prepared in four steps from N-Boc β-lactams. These easily prepared, highly robust, and flexible building blocks allow the incorporation of chirality and structural diversity, rendering the method feasible for diversity- as well as target-oriented synthesis.     

Nicotinic acid functionalized organomodified silica as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of benzoyl fumarate

A new hybrid catalyst has been developed by incorporating nicotinic acid onto an organomodified silica. The catalyst was applied as a heterogeneous catalyst for the synthesis of benzoyl fumarate. The reactions work well in the presence of 20 wt % of the catalyst at room temperature to produce the desired products in high yield. The catalyst could be recovered and reused without appreciable change in activity.     

Novel monofunctionalized electron-deficient anthraquinone-based discotic liquid crystals

A series of electron-deficient 1-hydroxy-2,3,5,6,7-pentaalkoxyanthra-9,10-quinones has been synthesized. All nine members of the series were found to be liquid crystalline, forming columnar mesophases over a broad temperature range. Such supramolecular building blocks can be used for the preparation of novel discotic dimers, oligomers, polymers and metallomesogens.     

Vanadium oxytrichloride,a novel reagent for the oxidative trimerization of o-dialkoxybenzenes to hexaalkoxytriphenylenes

Triphenylene derivatives with six peripheral chains can make excellent discotic liquid crystals showing great promise in electronic devices. Vanadium oxytrichloride was found to be a novel reagent for the preparation of various triphenylene derivatives. Symmetrically substituted hexaalkoxytriphenylenes were obtained from o-dialkoxybenzenes by oxidative trimerization with VOCl₃ in high yields. Oxidative coupling of a 3,3',4,4'-tetraalkoxybiphenyl with 1,2-dialkoxybenzenes yielded unsymmetrically substituted derivatives of triphenylene; a direct coupling of a 3,3',4,4'-tetraalkoxybiphenyl with alkoxyphenol produced monofunctionalized triphenylenes.
