Contributions to the Chemistry of Phosphorus. 143. Li₄P₂₆ and Na₄P₂₆, the First Salts with Hexacosaphosphid(4?) Ions The hexacosaphosphides Li₄P₂₆ ( 1 ) and Na₄P₂₆ ( 2 ) are formed besides other polyphosphides in the reaction of white phosphorus with lithium dihydrogenphosphide or sodium. 1 also results from the decomposition of Li₂HP₇ in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature and can be obtained pure as a crystalline solvent adduct Li₄P₂₆ · 16 THF. According to 2D?³¹P-NMR spectroscopic investigations the P₂₆^4? ion is a conjucto-phosphane of two P₇(5)^?-and two P₉(3)^?-unit groups with structures analogous to norbornane and deltacyclane, respectively.     

Organometallic Compounds of the Lanthanoides. LXVI. Synthesis and X-ray crystal structure of [O(CH2CH2C5H4)2Y(μ-OH]2 and (MeC5H4)3Ho(H2O), two unusual products of the hydrolysis of organolanthanoide compounds

The partial hydrolysis of [O(CH₂CH₂C₅H₄)₂]Y(C₅H₄CH₃) 1 , [O(CH₂CH₂C₅H₄)₂]Y(C₅H₅) 3 , and [O(CH₂CH₂C₅H₄)₂]Ho(C₅H₄CH₃) 5 results in the formation of [O(CH₂CH₂CH₂C₅H₄)₂Y(μ-OH)₂]₂ 2 , (C₅H₅)₃Y(OH₂) 9 and (MeC₅H₄)₃Ho(OH₂) 11 . The new compounds have been characterized by elemental analyses, IR and NMR spectra. The X-ray structural analyses shows 2 to be monoclinic, space group P2₁/n with a = 1146.0(3), b= 1046.6(3), c = 1514.9(3) pm, β = 94.83(2)°. The molecular structure shows bridging hydroxyl groups with a mean distance Y? O = 223.8(3) pm. 11 crystallizes in the cubic space group 14 3d with a = 1847.9(3)pm with Z = 16 molecules per unit cell. The molecules posses symmetry C₃-3, the coordination is trigonal pyramidal with three methylcyclopentadienyl anions and one water molecule as ligands. The distance Ho? O is 231 pm.     

Direct observation of C2 hydrocarbon-oxygen complexes on Ag(110) with a variable-low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope

A variable-low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM) was used to observe oxygen (O2), ethylene (C2H4), and acetylene (C2H2) molecules on a Ag(110) surface and the various complexes that were formed between these two hydrocarbons and oxygen at 13 K. Ethylene molecule(s) were moved to the vicinity of O2 either by STM tunneling electrons at 13 K or thermally at 45 K to form (C2H4)x-O2 (x = 1-4) complexes stabilized by C-H...O hydrogen bonding. Acetylene-oxygen complexes involving one or two acetylene molecules were observed.     

Nachweis der Keimwirkung bei der katalytischen Goldreaktion

Zusammenfassung Eisen(II)sulfat reduziert in saurer Lösung Silbernitrat zu metallischem Silber; diese Reaktion wird durch Goldspuren katalysiert. Bei Abwesenheit von Trägerkeimen liegt die molare Grenzkonzentration für Gold bei etwa 10^–8, bei Gegenwart von Keimen dagegen bei 10^–11 bis 10^–12. Eine geregelte Keimzahl wird durch Zusatz kleinster Bariummengen erhalten, die eine an sich kaum wahrnehmbare Bariumsulfattrübung bilden. Zur praktischen Anwendung geeignet dürfte eine Abänderung der Reaktion sein, bei der als Reduktor Hydrazin in alkalischer, Tartrat und Ammoniak enthaltender Lösung benutzt wird.

Summary In acid solution, iron(II) sulfate reduces silver nitrate to metallic silver. This reaction is catalyzed by traces of gold. In the absence of carrier nuclei, the molar limiting concentration for gold is about 10^–8, but in the presence of nuclei this limit is 10^–11 to 10^–12. A controlled number of nuclei is obtained by adding very small amounts of barium, which produce a barely visible turbidity of barium sulfate. — For practical application, it may be possible to use a modified form of the reaction, in which the reductant is hydrazine acting in an alcaline solution containing tartrate and ammonia.

Résumé En solution acide le sulfate de fer (II) réduit le nitrate d'argent à l'état d'argent métallique; cette réaction est catalysée par des traces d'or. En l'absence des germes, la concentration limite pour l'or est environ 10^–8, mais en présence des germes cette limite est 10^–11 à 10^–12. On peut obtenir un nombre connu de germes par addition d'une très petite quantité de baryum qui produira un trouble àpeine visible dû au sulfate de baryum formé. En pratique on peut employer une forme de réaction différente, l'agent réducteur étant l'hydrazine agissant en milieu alcalin en présence de tartrate et d'ammoniaque.

     

Functional involvement of src and focal adhesion kinase in a CD99 splice variant-induced motility of human breast cancer cells

Earlier report showed that expression of a splice variant of CD99 transmembrane protein increases invasive ability of human breast cancer cells. Cell motility was also significantly enhanced by the CD99 splice variant expression. In an effort to identify the cellular components that mediate a signal transduction pathway triggered by the CD99 splice variant, known signal path inhibitors were examined for their effects on the motility of the CD99 splice variant-transfected MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells. Phenylarsine oxide, an inhibitor of phosphatase specific for focal adhesion kinase, and PP1, an inhibitor of src kinase family, significantly suppressed motility of the cells. Among different types of src transfectant clones generated, kinase-negative mutant src transfectant cells were 80% less motile than the mock cells transfected with an empty-vector, while v-src and c-src transfectants exhibited cell motility levels at or slightly above the mock transfectant. These results suggest that src and focal adhesion kinase mediate the intracellular signaling pathway of a CD99 splice variant for the induction of motility of human breast cancer cells.     

Cadmium(II) and mercury(II) complexes of an NO2S2-donor macrocycle and its ditopic xylyl-bridged analogue

The NO2S2-donor macrocycle (L1) was synthesised from the ring closure reaction between Boc-N-protected 2,2'-iminobis(ethanethiol) (3) and 2,2'-(ethylenedioxy)bis(benzyl chloride) (4) followed by deprotection of the Boc-group. alpha,alpha'-Dibromo-p-xylene was employed as a dialkylating agent to bridge two L1 to yield the corresponding N-linked product (L2). The X-ray structure of L2 (as its HBr salt) is described. A range of Cd(II) and Hg(II) complexes of L1 (6-9) and L2 (10-12) were prepared and characterised. Reaction of HgX2 (X = Br or I) with L1 afforded [Hg(L1)Br]2[Hg2Br6].2CH2Cl2 6 and [Hg(L1)I(2)] 7, respectively. For 6, the Hg(II) ion in the complex cation has a distorted tetrahedral coordination environment composed of S2N donor atoms from L1 and a bromo ligand. In 7 the coordination geometry is highly distorted tetrahedral, with the macrocycle coordinating in an exodentate manner via one S and one N atom. The remaining two coordination sites are occupied by iodide ions. [Hg(L1)(ClO4)]ClO4 8 was isolated from the reaction of Hg(ClO4)2 and L1. The X-ray structure reveals that all macrocyclic ring donors bind to the central mercury ion in this case, with the latter exhibiting a highly distorted octahedral coordination geometry. The O2S2-donors from the macrocyclic ring define the equatorial plane while the axial positions are occupied by the ring nitrogen as well as by an oxygen from a monodentate perchlorato ion. Reaction of Cd(NO3)(2).4H2O with L1 afforded [Cd(L1)(NO3)2](.)0.5CH2Cl2 9 in which L1 acts as a tridentate ligand, binding exo-fashion via its S2N donors. The remaining coordination positions are filled by two bidentate nitrate ions such that, overall, the cadmium is seven-coordinate. Reactions of HgX2(X = Br or I) with L2 yielded the isostructural 2 : 1 (metal : ligand) complexes, [Hg2(L2)Br4] 10 and [Hg2(L2)I(4)] 11. Each mercury ion has a distorted tetrahedral environment made up of S and N donors from an exodentate L2 and two coordinated halides. Contrasting with this, the reaction of L2 with Cd(NO3)(2).4H2O yielded a 1-D coordination network, {[Cd2(L2)(NO3)4].2CH2Cl2}n 12 in which each ring of L2 is exo-coordinated via two S atoms and one N atom to a cadmium ion which is also bound to one monodentate and one bidentate nitrate anion. The latter also has one of its oxygen atom attached to a neighboring cadmium via a nitroso (mu2-O) bridge such that the overall coordination geometry about each cadmium is seven-coordinate. The [Cd(L2)0.5(NO3)2] units are linked by an inversion to yield the polymeric arrangement.     

A series of tetrahomodioxacalix[4]biscrown-n. Syntheses, crystal structures, and metal binding abilities

A series of novel tetrahomodioxacalix[4]biscrowns with crown-2, crown-3, crown-4, crown-5, and crown-6 units were synthesized. Conformations of each product are dependent on the base used and their conformation stabilities. All conformations were proven by NMR spectra and/or X-ray crystal structures. The 1,3-alternate homodioxacalix[4]biscrown-4 (4b) shows the best selectivity for K+, whereas the 1,3-alternate homodioxacalix[4]crown-5 (5) does for Cs+. Those selectivities are attributable to electrostatic interaction between the metal ion and the crown ring, as well as a pi-metal complexation. However, the C-1,2-alternate conformation does not take the metal ions regardless of the crown species as a result of steric hindrance from the methylene bridge of an ArCH2Ar unit.     

The fate of the hydroxyalkoxy radical in the OH‐initiated oxidation of isoprene

Rate constants for several intermediate steps in the OH‐initiated oxidation of isoprene were determined using laser‐photolysis/laser‐induced fluorescence of OH radicals at total pressures between 3 and 4 Torr at 295 K. The rate constant for decomposition of the hydroxyalkoxy radical was determined to be (3.0 ± 0.5) × 10⁴ s^?1 in this pressure range, which is in fair agreement with previous work. The presence of a prompt alkoxy decomposition pathway was also investigated and found to contribute less than 10% to the total hydroxyalkoxy radical decomposition. The rate constant for the reaction of the hydroxyperoxy radical with NO was determined to be (2.5 ± 0.5) × 10^?11 cm³ molecule^?1 s^?1, which is moderately higher than previously reported. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
