Metabisulfite interference in biosensing and Folin-Ciocalteu analysis of polyphenols

Sodium metabisulfite is one of the forms of sulphurous compounds which are added as preservative in food and beverage processing industries. Its interference with different methods of analysis of polyphenols was investigated in the present work. Studies involved the reaction of metabisulfite at platinum electrodes either at a constant applied potential of +100 mV vs. Ag/AgCl electrode with amperometric detection, or at linear potential sweep in cyclic voltammetry experiments. In a second stage, its effect on the analysis of polyphenols that are oxidised by enzymes was examined by the inhibition that metabisulfite caused on caffeic acid oxidation in the presence of free and immobilized laccase. It was found that immobilized laccase was less inhibited than free laccase. A confirmation of the influence of metabisulfite on the Folin-Ciocalteu analysis was also done.     

N-propargylic beta-enaminones: common intermediates for the synthesis of polysubstituted pyrroles and pyridines.

N-Propargylic beta-enaminones have been used as common intermediates for the synthesis of polysubstituted pyrroles and pyridines. Best results have been obtained using DMSO as solvent. In the presence of Cs(2)CO(3) N-propargylic beta-enaminones are cyclized to pyrroles in good to high yields, whereas omitting bases and using CuBr leads to the selective formation of pyridines.     

Accurate Design of Finline Tapers for Millimeter Wave Applications

The design of nonuniform bilateral finlines on anisotropic substrates for millimeter wave applications is presented. The taper consists of a planar circuit with smooth variation of the slot width profile along the structure. The spectral domain method and Galerkin procedure are combined with the transmission line theory for studying the behavior of tapered bilateral finlines and evaluation of their design parameters. The influence of the substrate anisotropy on the propagation characteristics of these structures is also examined. This technique is general and can be applied to investigate a broad class of planar transmission line tapers.     

Stabilization of catalytic sol-gel entrapped perruthenate

A combination of more stable counter-cation (tetraphenylphosphonium in place of tetrapropylammonium), of local basic microenvironment, and of a non-solubilizing reaction medium (supercritical CO₂) improves the life-cycle and reusability of catalytic ORMOSILs doped with perruthenate in the oxidation of alcohols with O₂. A number of different bases were co-entrapped and their effect on catalysis assessed in the oxidative dehydrogenation of benzyl alcohol in dense phase carbon dioxide at 22 MPa and 75 °C. The optimized catalyst retains most of its activity after five consecutive runs when a normal ORMOSIL-entrapped TPAP has become inactive. Deactivation of TPAP could be ascribed by EPR analysis to the formation of catalytically inactive RuO₂.     

Precipitates originating from tungsten crucible parts in AlN bulk crystals grown by the PVT method

In order to evaluate the possible involvement of crucible materials in the growth of AlN bulk crystals grown by physical vapor transport, we applied growth conditions with a high vertical thermal gradient and hence high supersaturation of aluminum vapor. Under these conditions, precipitates formed causing diffuse grayish substructures at the initial growth interface and in the crystal body, decorating dislocations. Electron microscopy studies revealed that the precipitates are elongated, single‐phase particles with sizes of 50–500 nm of commensurate structure, oriented along the <110> direction. Chemical analysis of the precipitates showed tungsten as well as carbon and oxygen. The lattice parameters of the precipitates are in close agreement to hexagonal tungsten hemicarbide (W₂C). The possible transport from the tungsten parts and its conversion into tungsten hemicarbide precipitates is discussed. We thus conclude that the W₂C precipitates may contribute to the decoration of dislocations, even in growth with moderate thermal gradients.     

4-Trichloroacetyl-1,2,3-triazoles: A versatile building block for rapid assessment of carbohydrazides and rufinamide derivatives

This work reports the synthesis of a series of (1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)carbohydrazides (2), which were obtained from 4-trichloroacetyl-1H-1,2,3-triazoles (1). Triazoles 1 were synthesized by 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction, starting from 4-alkoxy-1,1,1-trichloroalk-3-en-2-ones and benzyl azides and easily (15 min) converted to 2 by reaction with hydrazine hydrate (73–82% yield). Carbohydrazides 2 proved to be a versatile building block for constructing a series of fluorinated heterocycles analogous to rufinamide, i.e., 1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl-1,3,4-oxadiazoles, a pyrrole derivative, and a 2-pyrazoline, through [4+1]–, [1+4]–, and [3+2]–cyclocondensation reactions, respectively. Finally, and according to the Lipinski’s rule of five, 2,6-difluorobenzylated 1,2,3-triazoles can be considered as potential candidates for further biological activity assays.     

New,simple, and efficient method for the synthesis of N-substituted 4-trifluoromethyl-5-(alkan-1-ol)-pyridin-2(1H)-imines

A new, simple, and efficient method for the synthesis a novel series of 1-substituted 4-(trifluoromethyl)-5-(alkan-1-ol)-pyridin-2(1H)-imines from the reaction of 3-(5,6-dihydro-4H-pyran-3-yl)-4,4,4-trifluorobut-2-enenitrile and 3-(4,5-dihydrofuran-3-yl)-4,4,4-trifluorobut-2-enenitrile with primary amines – is described. The products were obtained in 29–82% yield.
