Confining surface state electrons in less than two dimensions: A spectroscopic study

We observe the partial confinement of the twodimensional electron gas of ans-p-like surface state by the regular step distribution of several vicinal Cu(111) surfaces. The spatial distribution of the surface state is visualized by scanning tunneling microscopy. Local tunneling spectroscopy reveals a shift of the maximum of the density of states of the surface state towards the Fermi level, which correlates with the size of the terraces. The average shift is also measured by angle-resolved photoemission and found to be consistent with a one-dimensional Kronig-Penney model.     

Bifurcations in a forced softening duffing oscillator

The response of a damped Duffing oscillator of the softening type to a harmonic excitation is analyzed in a two-parameter space consisting of the frequency and amplitude of the excitation. An approximate procedure is developed for the generation of the bifurcation diagram in the parameter space of interest. It is a combination of second-order perturbation solutions of the system in the neighborhood of its non-linear resonances and Floquet analysis. The results show that the proposed scheme is capable of predicting symmetry-breaking and period-doubling bifurcations as well as Jumps to either bounded or unbounded motions. The results obtained are validated using analogand digital-computer simulations, which show chaos and unbounded motions, among other behaviors.     

Bifurcations and chaos in parametrically excited single-degree-of-freedom systems

The behavior of single-degree-of-freedom systems possessing quadratic and cubic nonlinearities subject to parametric excitation is investigated. Both fundamental and principal parametric resonances are considered. A global bifurcation diagram in the excitation amplitude and excitation frequency domain is presented showing different possible stable steady-state solutions (attractors). Fractal basin maps for fundamental and principal parametric resonances when three attractors coexist are presented in color. An enlargement of one region of the map for principal parametric resonance reveals a Cantor-like set of fractal boundaries. For some cases, both periodic and chaotic attractors coexist.     

Effect of magnetic field orientation on fluidized beds of magnetic particles： Theory and experiment

Geldart-A fluidized beds of fine particles experience a jamming transition between a fluid-like state and a solid-like state at a certain superficial gas velocity, that depends on the relative strength of interparticle attractive forces with respect to particle weight, lnterparticle forces provide the bed with a certain tensile strength in the jammed state. In the work presented here we analyze the behavior of a fluidized bed of magnetic particles subjected to an externally applied magnetic field, which contributes to enhance interparticle forces. The importance of the magnetic contribution to interparticle forces is measured by the changes in the tensile strength and the superficial gas velocity at the jamming transition. The link of the field orientation with the microstructure of the bed is discussed,     

Mössbauer Investigation of the Itinerant Magnets U(Ga0.98Sn0.02)3 and CeFe2

The theoretical predictions that UGa₃ and CeFe₂ should be regarded as itinerant magnets stimulated new investigations. In this paper we focus on Mössbauer measurements aimed to characterize their magnetic properties. We show that the analysis of the transferred hyperfine interactions at the ¹¹⁹Sn nuclei in U(Ga_0.98Sn_0.02)₃, a type II antiferromagnet, provides direct information on the f-p hybridization and allows to determine the orientation of the U moments. The study of CeFe₂ demonstrates that the intrinsic ferromagnetism coexists with short range antiferromagnetic correlations. The instability of the ferromagnetic state is illustrated by doping CeFe₂ with a small amount of Co and by application of pressure on pure CeFe₂. Our results will be discussed in connection with neutron and synchrotron experiments.     

Fuzzy relation equations theory as a basis of fuzzy modelling: An overview

We give a wide overview on the applications of fuzzy relation equations theory to decision-making processes, to the construction of preference relations and to Knowledge Engineering, mainly fuzzy control and fuzzy pattern recognition. General theoretical results and methodological aspects are pointed out.     

Determination of diphenhydramine hydrochloride by flow injection with bromophenol blue and turbidimetric measurement

The study of a number of diphenhydramine-dye systems was carried out in order to determine the most suitable precipitate for the turbidimetric determination of diphenhydramine using flow injection (FI). The reagent selected was Bromophenol Blue. The chemical and FI variables were optimised. The calibration graph was linear over the concentration range 50-230 p.p.m. of diphenhydramine hydrochloride. A number of interfering substances were also investigated.     

Homotopical linking and Morse index estimates in min-max theorems

The authors extend some well-known Morse estimates for critical points of saddle point type to some linking conditions recently considered in the literature. Applications are given for multiplicity results in PDE and existence of subharmonic solutions for a class of conservative ODE.
