Synthesis of a small library of non-symmetric cyclic sulfamide HIV-1 protease inhibitors

A set of 11 non-symmetric cyclic sulfamide HIV-1 protease inhibitors were synthesized and evaluated. The use of a key microwave-assisted silver(I) oxide mediated selective mono N-benzylation reaction enabled fast and straightforward synthesis. The K_i values of the new inhibitors ranged between 0.28 μM and >20 μM.     

The perturbative proton form factor reexamined

We recalculate the proton Dirac form factor based on the perturbative QCD factorization theorem, which includes Sudakov suppression. The evolution scale of the proton wave functions and the infrared cutoffs for the Sudakov re-summation are carefully chosen such that the soft divergences from large coupling constants are diminished and perturbative QCD predictions are stabilized. We find that the King–Sachrajda model for the proton wave function leads to results which are in better agreement with experimental data than those from the Chernyak–Zhitnitsky wave function. Operators with smooth functional calculi

We introduce a class of (tuples of commuting) unbounded operators on a Banach space, admitting smooth functional calculi, which contains all operators of Helffer-Sjöstrand type and is closed under the action of smooth proper mappings. Moreover, the class is closed under tensor product of commuting operators. In general, and operator in this class has no resolvent in the usual sense, so the spectrum must be defined in terms of the functional calculus. We also consider invariant subspaces and spectral decompositions.     

A carbonic anhydrase inhibitor induces bicarbonate-reversible suppression of electron transfer in pea photosystem 2 membrane fragments

The effects of suppression of the carbonic anhydrase (CA) activity by a CA-inhibitor, acetazolamide (AA), on the photosynthetic activities of photosystem II (PS II) particles from higher plants were investigated. AA along with CA-activity inhibits the PS II photosynthetic electron transfer and the AA-induced suppression is totally reversed by the addition of bicarbonate (3-5 mM). Similar effect of recovery in the PS II photosynthetic activity was also revealed upon the addition of known artificial electron donors (potassium ferrocyanide and TMPD). Significance and possible functions of CA for the PS II donor side are discussed.     

Electron ionization-tandem mass spectrometry of glycosphingolipids. I: The identiftcation of compound-specific sequence ions in the collision-induced dissociation spectra of the immonium ions of two isomeric hexaglycosylceramides

A permethylated-reduced hexaglycosylceramide in a complex glycolipid mixture isolated from a unique human tissue has been identified by using tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). The mass spectrum of this glycolipid mixture, obtained by using in-beam electron ionization, is very complex, and fragment ions derived from the hexaglycosylceramide cannot be distinguished from other ions. Tandem mass spectrometry using a four-sector mass spectrometer gave the mass spectrum of the immonium ion of the permethylated-reduced hexaglycosykeramide (m / z 1645.8), which is characteristic of its structure. Comparison of this MS/MS spectrum with those of two similarly derivatized blood group hexaglycosylceramide isomers permitted identification of the unknown glycolipid structure.
