Production of very massive Higgs bosons

We compare Higgs boson production mechanisms at multi-TeV hadronic colliders. In addition to the previously investigated processes gluon + gluon → H and $\text{q}\text{q}\text{→ V}{}^1\text{→}\text{VH}\text{(}\text{V}\text{=}\text{W, Z}\text{)}$, we consider Higgs boson formation by pairs of virtual W's or Z's, a process analogous to two-photon collisions in e⁺e^? scattering. The Higgs production process $\text{W}{}^1\text{W}{}^1\text{→}\text{H}$ is dominated by longitudinal W's and is the most important mechanism for M_H > 6 M_W, if the top quark mass is about 30 GeV.     

Study of the centrally producer ππ andK \bar K systems at 85 and 300 GeV/c

We have studied the andK systems centrally produced in proton proton collisions at 300 GeV/c and ⁺/p proton collisions at 85 GeV/c using the CERN spectrometer. Clear evidence forS ^*/f _o(975) production is observed. An analysis performed on the ^{+ –} mass spectrum in the 1.0 GeV region, using a coupled channel formalism, shows that it is possible to describe theS ^*/f _o(975) effect with one single resonance once interference of theS ^*/f _o(975) with theS-wave background is introduced. The resultingS ^*/f _o(975) parameters arem _o =979±4MeV,g =0.28±0.04,g _K =0.56±0.18 corresponding to a pole position on sheet II at (1001±2)–i(36±4) MeV. Evidence is also found for a structure having a mass of 1472±12 MeV and a width of 195±33 MeV.     

A study of the centrally producedK *0 K^{*0} \bar K^{*0} final state in the reactionpp→p f (K + K -π+π-)p s at 300 GeV/c

The reactionpp→p _f (K ⁺ K ^-π⁺π^-)p _s , where theK ⁺ K ^? π⁺π^- system is centrally produced, has been studied at 300 GeV/c. TheK ^*0 \(K^{*0} \bar K^{*0} \) final state has been observed and the cross sections for its central production are found to be the same at 300 and 85 GeV/c. TheK ^*0 \(K^{*0} \bar K^{*0} \) final state appears to be produced as a non-resonant threshold enhancement.     

Self-assembled diisocyanide monolayer films on gold and palladium

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of the aromatic diisocyanides, 1,4-phenylenediisocyanide, 2,3,5,6-tetramethyl-1,4-phenylenediisocyanide, 4,4'-biphenyldiisocyanide, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethyl-4,4'-biphenyldiisocyanide, and 4,4' '-p-terphenyldiisocyanide, were prepared on gold and palladium surfaces. The SAMs were characterized by ellipsometry, polarization-modulated infrared reflection-absorption spectroscopy (PM-IRRAS), and grazing-angle attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (GATR). Based on the position of the metal-coordinated isocyanide stretching band, the SAMs on gold were found to bind in the terminal (eta(1)) geometry, while the SAMs on palladium prefer a different geometry which is possibly a triply bridging (mu(3)-eta(1)) geometry. A side-reaction of the unbound isocyanide in the SAM was identified as oxidation to an isocyanate group.     

Symmetrisation of β-alkoxyalkylmercury(II) acetates

β-Alkoxyalkylmercury(II) acetates have been symmetrised in situ with alkaline sodium stannite to afford good yields of bis(β-alkoxyalkyl)mercurials, [R¹R²C(OR)CHR³]₂ Hg.     

Observation of a Ξ*(2370) produced in 8.25 GeV/c K−p interactions

We observe production of a Ξ^*(2370) in the reactions K^?p→$[Y\overline{K}\pi ]$K, $[Y\overline{K}\pi ]$Kπ and [ΩK] (K or Kπ) at 8.25 GeV/c in a high statistics bubble chamber experiment. The mass and width are determined to be 2373 ± 8 MeV and 80 ± 25 MeV, respectively. The I = 1/2 assignment is strongly favoured.
