Synthesis of Halogenated α,β‐Unsaturated γ‐Butyrolactone Derivatives by Triphenylphosphine‐Catalyzed Cyclization of α‐Halogeno Ketones with Dialkyl Acetylenedicarboxylates (=Dialkyl But‐2‐ynedioates)

A Ph₃P‐catalyzed cyclization of α‐halogeno ketones 2 with dialkyl acetylenedicarboxylates (=dialkyl but‐2‐ynedioates) 3 produced halogenated α,β‐unsaturated γ‐butyrolactone derivatives 4 in good yields (Scheme 1, Table). The presence of electron‐withdrawing groups such as halogen atoms at the α‐position of the ketones was necessary in this reaction. Cyclization of α‐chloro ketones resulted in higher yields than that of the corresponding α‐bromo ketones. Dihalogeno ketones similarly afforded the expected γ‐butyrolactone derivatives in high yields.     

New 3D and 2D supramolecular heteroleptic palladium(II) dithiocarbamates as potent anticancer agents

Three new heteroleptic palladium(II) dithiocarbamates with better in vitro anticancer activity than cisplatin were synthesized and characterized by different analytical techniques, elemental analysis, FTIR, NMR, and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The Pd center is chelated by dithiocarbamate ligand {4-benzylpiperazine-1-carbodithioate (1) and (3) or (4-(2-methoxyphenyl)piperazine-1-carbodithioate (2)}, triorganophosphine {tris-(4-flourophenyl)-phosphine (1) and (2) or tris-(4-chlorophenyl)phosphine (3)}, and a chloro-group, resulting in a square planar geometry. The packing diagram reveals a 3D network (1 and 2) and a 2D network (3) composed of various 1D chains in which the molecules are linked via hydrogen bonds (1–3) and halide?π (1, 3) interactions. The anticancer activities of complexes against HeLa cell line varies in the sequence 2 (23.438 μM) > 1 (38.293 μM) > 3 (47.554 μM) > cisplatin (78.075 μM). The cytotoxicity of these complexes is due to their strong induction of oxidative stress and DNA-damage ability leading to apoptosis.     

MgBr2·OEt2 mediated protection of alcohols with hexamethyldisilazane: An efficient catalytic route for the preparation of silyl ethers under solvent-free conditions

Various types of alcohols and phenols were rapidly protected by hexamethyldisilazane in good to excellent yields at room temperature in the presence of catalytic amount of magnesium bromide ethyl etherate under solvent-free conditions. Good to excellent chemoselectivity was demonstrated for competitive protection of primary hydroxyls in the presence of secondary and tertiary alcohols. Highly selective protection of phenols in the presence of aromatic amines was also demonstrated successfully.     

On the completeness of eigenfunctions of the Frankl problem with the oddness condition

Modified Frankl problems with the oddness condition are considered for the Lavrent’ev-Bitsadze equation. The eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of these problems are found. The completeness of these eigenfunctions in the elliptic part of the domain is proved.     

Experimental Study of Effect of Temperature Variations on the Impedance Signature of PZT Sensors for Fatigue Crack Detection

Structural health monitoring (SHM) is recognized as an efficient tool to interpret the reliability of a wide variety of infrastructures. To identify the structural abnormality by utilizing the electromechanical coupling property of piezoelectric transducers, the electromechanical impedance (EMI) approach is preferred. However, in real-time SHM applications, the monitored structure is exposed to several varying environmental and operating conditions (EOCs). The previous study has recognized the temperature variations as one of the serious EOCs that affect the optimal performance of the damage inspection process. In this framework, an experimental setup is developed in current research to identify the presence of fatigue crack in stainless steel (304) beam using EMI approach and estimate the effect of temperature variations on the electrical impedance of the piezoelectric sensors. A regular series of experiments are executed in a controlled temperature environment (25°C–160°C) using 202 V1 Constant Temperature Drying Oven Chamber (Q/TBXR20-2005). It has been observed that the dielectric constant ε₃₃^T which is recognized as the temperature-dependent constant of PZT sensor has sufficiently influenced the electrical impedance signature. Moreover, the effective frequency shift (EFS) approach is optimized in term of significant temperature compensation for the current impedance signature of PZT sensor relative to the reference signature at the extended frequency bandwidth of the developed measurement system with better outcomes as compared to the previous literature work. Hence, the current study also deals efficiently with the critical issue of the width of the frequency band for temperature compensation based on the frequency shift in SHM. The results of the experimental study demonstrate that the proposed methodology is qualified for the damage inspection in real-time monitoring applications under the temperature variations. It is capable to exclude one of the major reasons of false fault diagnosis by compensating the consequence of elevated temperature at extended frequency bandwidth in SHM.     

Modeling and optimizing of sonochemical degradation of Basic Blue 41 via response surface methodology

The nanocatalyst-assisted sonodegradation of Basic Blue 41 (BB41) dye in aqueous medium was modeled and optimized using response surface method (RSM) based on Box-Behnken design. The studied variables included pH, initial dye concentration, H₂O₂ concentration and sonolysis time while each factor varied at three levels: Low level (−1), Medium level (0) and High level (+1). The ultrasound -assisted degradation was well described by developing quadratic model with correlation value squared (R²) of 0.9114. Factor effects along with interaction effects were evaluated. The graphical optimization step was conducted to achieve the best experimental condition in dye removal. pH, H₂O₂ concentration and initial dye concentration of the reaction were investigated. It was recognized that at lower pH values the dye removal rate decreased. However, dye removal rate increased (82.5%) by increasing the concentration of H₂O₂ and by lowering the initial dye concentration.      

Variable viscosity effects on the peristaltic motion of a third‐order fluid

The effect of variable viscosity on the peristaltic motion of MHD third‐order fluid in a channel is studied using slip condition. The series solution for stream function, longitudinal velocity and pressure gradient are first derived and then discussed in detail.
