Preparation of uniformly sized molecularly imprinted polymers for phenolic compounds and their application to the assay of bisphenol A in river water.

Uniformly sized molecularly imprinted polymers, which can recognize bisphenol A (BPA), have been prepared by a multi-step swelling and polymerization method using BPA or a structurally related analogue of BPA [p-t-octylphenol (OP) or p-t-butylphenol (BP)] as the template molecule, 4-vinylpyridine as the functional monomer, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as the cross-linker. The BP-imprinted polymer showed higher molecular recognition ability for BPA than the OP-imprinted polymer. The BPA- and BP-imprinted polymers were applied for the assay of a trace amount of BPA in river water using column-switching HPLC with fluorescence detection: A BPA-imprinted polymer was used for removal of BPA from the pretreatment eluent as the trap column, and a BP-imprinted polymer was used for selective pretreatment and enrichment of BPA in river water as the pretreatment column. The calibration graph, constructed from peak area data plotted versus BPA concentration, was linear with a correlation coefficient of >0.999 in the concentration ranges of 25-1000 ppt. The limit of quantitation was 25 ppt with a 5-ml injection. The column-switching HPLC system was successfully applied for the assay of BPA in river water.     

A study on LH- and FSH-RIA kits by immunoradiometric assay

An evaluation of LH- and FSH-RIA BEAD kits based on IRMA was carried out. The results obtained with the methods characterized by the use of monoclonal antibodies, i.e., one is linked to solid phase, and another is isotopically labeled, were compared with those determined by the Daiichi LH- and FSH-kits. Intra- and inter-assay precision, recovery, linearity, and specificity of both methods were favorable without exceptions. The cross reactivity of the LH kit to 5,000 mIU/ml hCG revealed within the range of less than 3 mIU/ml. Significant correlations were observed between the results derived from conventional Daiichi LH- and FSH-kits. The results from the conventional kits exhibited 30 to 40% of those from the Daiichi kits, considered to be mainly due to the difference in standard calibrations used. Among the individuals within the normal menstrual cycle, the serum LH- and FSH-levels determined by the present kits gave a typical pattern with a peak in the preovulatory phase. On the other hand, the LH- and FSH-values of individuals in normal pregnancy revealed strikingly decreased in comparison with those of non-pregnant women.     

Ab initio calculations of isomerization reaction of diphosphene 1-sulfide to thiadiphosphirane

Ab initio Calculations of the isomerization reaction of diphosphene 1-sulfide (2′) to thiadiphosphirane (3′) suggest that the energy barrier of the reaction in the ground state is 25 kcal/mol and that 2′ lies 21 kcal/mol above 3′, while the calculations show that there exists one local minimum on the lowest triplet energy surface.     

Effect of extracts of Zingiberaceae herbs on gastric secretion in rabbits

Some of the Zingiberaceae herbs are known to be useful as stomachics. Water extracts and methanol extracts of eight such herbs were examined in intact unanesthetized rabbits for their effect on gastric secretion. Oral administration of either water extracts or methanol extracts caused a significant decrease in gastric secretion. A significant effect of these extracts appeared at 3 h after administration. The effect of water extracts on gastric secretion was very similar to that of cimetidine, with a significant decrease in acid output. The effect of the methanol extracts was primarily observed as decreased pepsin output.
