Lipids and flavolignans from <Emphasis Type="Italic">Silybum marianum</Emphasis>

Lipids from the air-dried aerial part (AP) and seeds of Silybum marianum (L.) Gaerth. (Asteraceae) were studied. The class and fatty acid compositions of neutral lipids (AP, seeds) and glyco- and phospholipids (AP) were determined. Neutral lipids (NL) with a complicated set of lipophilic components, mainly triterpenols, sterols, and their esters predominated in the AP. The fatty acids of the AP were dominated by 16:0, 18:2 (glycolipids), and 18:3 (neutral lipids, phospholipids); of seed NL, by 18:2 and 18:1. The content and composition of flavolignans isolated from defatted seeds and the content of total protein in the meal were found.

The total flavonoids fromThermopsis alterniflora, Th. dolichocarpa, Vexibia alopecuroides, andRhaponticum carthamoides and their hypolipidemic activity

The total flavonoids have been isolated from the epigeal part ofThermopsis alterniflora andTh. dolichocarpa, and the roots and rhizomes ofVexibia alopecuroides, andRhaponticum carthamoides the compositions of the flavonoids present in each of the total extracts have been determined. It was found that the total flavonoid extracts investigated exhibited different degrees of hypolipidemic activity in relation to normal animals and animals with experimental hyperlipidemias. Essential oil and lipids from the cone berries ofJuniperus seravschanica

Essential oil and neutral lipids from the cone berries ofJuniperus seravschanica Kom. have been characterized for the first time. Fifty six components comprising 96.5% of the essential oil were identified; a-pinene (29.0%), -myrcene (17.9%), germacrene B (5.9%), and cedrol (3.1%) dominated; 5 classes of neutral lipids were found with a high content of the fatty acids 22:2 (10,13), 22:1 (13), and 18:2 (9,12).Published in Khimiya Prirodnykh Soedinenii, No. 4, 445–448, July–August, 1999.
