Liquid crystals represent a unique class of self-organising systems, which although found in many day-to-day practical material applications, such as displays, are also intimately entwined with living processes. They have the potential, just like living systems, to provide us with a unique vehicle for the development of self-ordering nano- and mesoscopic-engineered materials with specific functional properties. In this article we describe a new concept for the design of self-assembling functional liquid crystals as segmented or "Janus" liquid-crystalline supermolecular materials in the form of structures that contain two different types of mesogenic units, which favour different types of mesophase structure, grafted onto the same star-shaped scaffold to create supermolecules that contain different hemispheres. The materials exhibit chiral nematic and chiral smectic C phases.  相似文献

This paper investigates the use of the shear vane technique as a means of determining frictional and cohesive interparticle force contributions to the shear strength of coarse glass bead powders and slurries. To this end, the shear strength of 203-μm glass beads in air and slurried in water and kaolinite suspensions was determined as a function of vane immersion depth, vane geometry, and container size. Both vane immersion depth and container diameter are found to significantly impact the shear strength measured using the vane technique. An equation describing interparticle frictional and cohesive contributions to shear vane measurements was derived in an effort to describe the experimental results. A Janssen stress distribution model for granular materials forms the basis for this equation and appears to explain the behavior of shear strength measurements at varying immersion depths. The presence of the Janssen stress distribution can affect the interpretation of shear vane results. Rather than shear strength being a material property, as is the case with flocculated colloid slurries and polymer solutions, shear strength becomes a process property where vane depth, container size, and container material can result in significant measurement variations. Chlorine dioxide is one of the most interesting oxidants because it combines a strong capacity of oxidation with low formation of hazardous byproducts such as chlorinated organics during its application. Because of that, it is widely used in disinfection of drinking water and, currently, it is aimed to be used in the disinfection of surfaces or buildings. Although it is usually produced by the chemical interaction of chlorite with hypochlorite/chlorine or hydrochloric acid, one interesting alternative for its production is the combination in strongly acidic media of chlorate and hydrogen peroxide. Both compounds are known to be efficiently manufactured with electrochemical technology, opening the possibility of a complete electrochemical process to produce this important oxidant. This review summarizes the recent progress in the electrochemical production of the two raw materials, as well as the complete electrochemical production of chlorine dioxide, not only paying attention to the scientific literature but, most importantly, to recent patents, trying to see in which technology readiness level are each of the technologies and what are the elements of the value chain required for a complete implementation of the technology.  相似文献

The synergy of aromatic gain and hydrogen bonding in a supramolecular polymer is explored. Partially aromatic bis(squaramide) bolaamphiphiles were designed to self‐assemble through a combination of hydrophobic, hydrogen‐bonding, and aromatic effects into stiff, high‐aspect‐ratio fibers. UV and IR spectroscopy show electron delocalization and geometric changes within the squaramide ring indicative of strong hydrogen bonding and aromatic gain of the monomer units. The aromatic contribution to the interaction energy was further supported computationally by nucleus‐independent chemical shift (NICS) and harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity (HOMA) indices, demonstrating greater aromatic character upon polymerization: at least 30 % in a pentamer. The aromatic gain–hydrogen bonding synergy results in a significant increase in thermodynamic stability and a striking difference in aggregate morphology of the bis(squaramide) bolamphiphile compared to isosteres that cannot engage in this effect.  相似文献

The chemical effects of acoustic cavitation are obtained in sono-reactors built-up from a vessel and an ultrasonic source. In this paper, simulations of an existing sono-reactor are carried out, using a linear acoustics model, accounting for the vibrations of the solid walls. The available frequency range of the generator (19-21 kHz) is systematically scanned. Global quantities are plotted as a function of frequency in order to obtain response curves, exhibiting several resonance peaks. In absence of the precise knowledge of the bubbles size distribution and spatial location, the attenuation coefficient of the wave is taken as a variable, but spatially uniform parameter, and its influence is studied. The concepts of acoustic energy, intensity, active power, and source impedance are recalled, along with the general balance equation for acoustic energy, which is used as a convergence check of the simulations. It is shown that the interface between the liquid and the solid walls cannot be correctly represented by the simple approximations of either infinitely soft, or infinitely hard boundaries. Moreover, the liquid-solid coupling allows the cooling jacket to receive a noticeable part of the input power, although it is not in direct contact with the sonotrode. It may therefore undergo cavitation and this feature opens the perspective to design sono-reactors which avoid direct contact between the working liquid and the sonotrode. Besides, the possibility to shift the main pressure antinode far from the sonotrode area by exciting a resonance of the system is examined.  相似文献

The apparent content curves and their analytical applications are described. Basing on these curves a mathematical method, which permits the identification of the interfering component present in a binary mixture as well as the determination of the contents of both constituents, is proposed. The existence of considerable interaction coefficients is not an impediment for its application. Besides, the analyte contents in the mixture can be obtained without the use of standard interference solutions. The proposed procedure is applied to the analysis of mixtures of dyes with overlapping absorption spectra.  相似文献

The synthesis of (5-oxoheptene-1E,3E-dienyl)-5,6-dihydro-2H-pyran-2-one has been performed in seven steps using four key steps: a ring-closing metathesis reaction to build up the unsaturated lactone, a Wittig reaction to control the C6-C7 (E) double bond, a cross-metathesis reaction to control the (E) double bond at C8-C9, and an enantioselective allyltitanation to control the absolute configuration at C5. Spectroscopic data (IR, MS, 1H, and 13C NMR) were identical to those of the natural compound except for the optical rotation, which led us to re-assign the absolute configuration of the natural product.  相似文献
