Computations in choice groupoids

Defining achoice as a mapping of the subsets of a setX into their respective subsets, a one-to-one (and naturally) corresponding binary operation,sequential choice, is identified under which the power set ofX is closed as achoice groupoid. A complete logical diagram is given, exhibiting all the implications between conjunctions of the seven conditions: (1) idempotence, (2) consistency, (3) absorbence, and (4) homomorphism of a choice, and (5) commutativity, (6) associativity, and (7) path-independence of the corresponding sequential choice.

Syntheses of Enantiomerically Pure Violaxanthins and Related Compounds The epoxides 16 and ent- 16 , prepared by Sharpless-Katsuki oxidation of 15 in excellent yield and very high enantiomeric purity, were used as synthons for the preparation of (+)-(S)-didehydrovomifoliol (45) , (+)-(6S, 7E, 9E)-abscisic ester 46 , (+)-(6S, 7E, 9Z)-abscsic ester 47 , (?)-(3S, 7E, 9E)-xanthoxin (49) , (?)-(3R, 7E, 9E)-xanthoxin (50) , (3S, 5R, 6S, 3′S,5′R, 6′S, all-E)-violaxanthin (1) (3R, 5R,6S,3′R,5′R,6′S, all-E)-violaxanthin (55) and their (9Z) (see 53 , 57 ), (13Z) (see 54 , 58 ), and (15Z) (see 60 ) isomers. The novel violadione ( 61 ) was prepared from 1 by oxidation with DMSO/Ac₂O. By base treatment, 61 was converted into violadienedione (62) , a potential precursor of carotenoids with phenolic end groups.     

Interdiffusion of polymer chains during latex coating

The fluorescence method was used to study the interdiffusion of polymer chains during annealing of latex above its glass transition temperature (T_g). The latex film was prepared from mixture of naphthalene (N) (donor) and pyrene (P) (acceptor)-labeled poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) latex particles. Heptane was used as the coalescent agent. A steady-state fluorescence technique was employed to measure the amount of direct nonradiative energy transfer from N to P during the interdiffusion of polymer chains across the particle–particle junction. Various latex films with different latex contents were used to measure the percentage critical occupation for the reliable steady-state fluorescence measurements. Diffusions activation energies in these latex films were measured and found to be around 30 kcal/mol, which was attributed to the backbone motion of PMMA chains.     

Isolation and Absolute Configuration of β,β-Carotene Diepoxide

The 5,6:5′,6′-diepoxy-5,6:5′,6;-tetrahydro-β,β-carotene, isolated from tubers of a white-fleshed variety of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas LAM .) has been assigned the (5R,6S,5′R,6′S)-chirality on the basis of its HPLC, UV/VIS, and CD data.

Synthesis and X-Ray Structure of (6′RS,8′RS,2E)- and (6′RS,8′SR,2E)-3-Methyl-3-(2′,2′,6′-trimethyl-7′-oxabicyclo[4.3.0]non-9′-en-8′-yl)-2-propenal ([(5RS,8RS)- and (5RS,8SR)-5,8-Epoxy-5,8-dihydro-ionylidene]acetaldehyde) To check our previous spectroscopic assignments of the structures of trans- and cis-substituted furanoid end groups of carotenoid-5,8-epoxides, we now have synthesized the title compounds. An X-ray structure determination of a single crystal of the trans-isomer (±)- -10A is in agreement with the ¹ H-NMR spectroscopic arguments: isomers with Δδ (H? C(7), H? C(8)) = 0.15–0.22 ppm and J > 1.4 for H? C(7) belong to the cis-series; Δδ in trans-compounds is < 0.07 ppm, and H? C(7) appears as a broad singulett.     

Spectroscopic, thermal and structural studies on manganous malate crystals

Prismatic crystals of manganous malate have been prepared by controlled ionic diffusion in hydrosilica gel. The structure was elucidated using single crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystals are orthorhombic with space group Pbca. Vibrations of the functional groups were identified by the FTIR spectrum. Thermogravimetric and differential thermal analyses (TG-DTA) were carried out to explore the thermal decomposition pattern of the material. Structural information derived from FTIR and TG-DTA studies is in conformity with the single crystal XRD data.     

Effective binuclear Pd(II) complexes for Suzuki reactions in water

A series of new ionic binuclear Pd(II) complexes supported by water‐soluble bis(α‐diimine) ligands were prepared and employed as catalysts for the palladium‐catalyzed Suzuki reaction in aqueous media. The binuclear nature of the complexes increased the reaction rate, while electronic and steric modification of the ligand frameworks had a remarkable influence upon the catalytic activity of the palladium complexes. The catalysts were shown to be homogeneous through mercury poisoning experiments and complexes could be recycled more than 10 times without loss of catalytic activity.
