Barotropic Instability of the Bickley Jet at High Reynolds Numbers

We investigate the linear stability of the Bickley jet in the framework of the beta-plane approximation. Because singular inviscid neutral modes exist in the retrograde case     , it is necessary to add viscosity to interpret them. One of these modes was found in closed form by Howard and Drazin [1] . However, its critical point is at the center of the jet and it was therefore not possible for these authors to ascertain the relationship of this mode to the stability problem or to discuss how to continue the eigenfunction across the singularity.
The viscous critical layer problem associated with this singularity is considerably more difficult than the usual one (which leads to integrals of the Airy function) because     and, consequently, a second-order turning point is involved. Our analysis shows that the Howard–Drazin mode is degenerate in the domain where it is valid as a limit of the viscous problem (wavenumber  α²≤ 9/2  ), that is, it corresponds to both an odd and an even mode. This conclusion is confirmed by direct numerical solution of the Orr–Sommerfeld equation which shows, in addition, that viscosity is destabilizing along portions of the stability boundary. For a retrograde jet, instability is found to occur beyond the inviscid critical value of β, that is, in the region where the flow would be stable according to the Rayleigh–Kuo condition.     

Arithmetic on Groups of Positive Rationals

In this paper we develop a theory of unique factorization for subgroups of the positive rationals. We show that this theory is strong enough to include arithmetic progressions and the theory of genera in algebraic number fields. We establish generalizations of both Dirichlet's theorem on primes in arithmetic progressions and the theory of genera for Abelian extensions of the rationals.     

Interference of spin splittings in magneto-oscillation phenomena in two-dimensional systems

The spin splitting caused by the terms linear in wavevector in the effective Hamiltonian containing can give rise to the new magneto-oscillation phenomena in two-dimensional systems. It is shown that the joint action of the spin-dependent contributions due to the heterostructure asymmetry and to the lack of inversion center in the bulk material suppresses beats that arise in the magneto-oscillation phenomena in the presence of the terms of only one of these types.     

A comprehensive study of the long pulse Nd:YAG laser drilling of multi-layer carbon fibre composites

The results of an extensive experimental study of the free running Nd:YAG laser drilling of a multi-layer carbon fibre composite, where adjacent layers have differently orientated fibres, are reported. For holes drilled with the laser operating in fixed-Q mode at 1064 nm, parallel sections of blind holes illustrating discontinuities in the hole size along a given section direction will be shown to occur at the interface between adjacent layers. An explanation for this effect is proposed. Detailed single pulse drilling characteristics will be presented illustrating the exit hole diameter as a function of pulse energy and material thickness. These characteristics illustrate a ‘stable' drilling regime in which the exit hole diameters are least sensitive to changes in pulse energy or material thickness and a less ‘stable' regime in which they are more strongly dependent on these parameters. Drilling characteristics will be given for two different beam qualities, illustrating the greater drilling depth and reduced hole size achievable with an improved beam quality. Finally holes drilled through a 2 mm thick sample of material with multiple pulses are considered. Size distribution curves for entrance and exit holes will be presented. The total energy required (number of pulses × pulse energy) to drill through 2 mm thick material will be reported as a function of pulse energy in stationary air and argon atmospheres and in a partial vacuum, illustrating a threshold energy which is dependent upon the drilling atmosphere. The threshold energies will be discussed with reference to plasma formation and the reactivity of the drilling atmosphere.     

Dynamic reflection holograms in CdF2 crystals with bistable centers

The diffraction efficiency and the recording and relaxation times of dynamic reflection holograms, recorded in CdF₂ crystals with bistable centers are studied experimentally in the temperature range 20–100°C. In the model experiments which measured the quality of the wave reflected from the hologram, the dynamic wavefront distortions are demonstrated to be efficiently compensated using a holographic corrector based on these crystals. CdF₂ crystals with bistable centers are likely to be useful in solving problems of correction of laser light wavefront and image correction in observation telescopes with nonideal primary mirrors.     

Algebraic methods in quantum mechanics: from molecules to polymers

We present a brief review of algebraic techniques developed and applied in molecular spectroscopy in the last five years. We also outline perspectives for new applications of the Lie algebraic method in the first decade of the new century. Received 21 November 2001     

The cardinality of manifold atlases

It is shown that any finite dimensionalC ⁰ manifold (connected and Hausdorff but otherwise unrestricted) has an atlas of cardinality not greater than that of the continuum; while if it has a Hölder continuous pseudo-Riemannian metric then there is a countable atlas.     

Some experiences in controlling contamination of environmental materials during sampling and processing for low-level actinide analysis

Selected experiences in the control of contamination and the threat it poses to the quality of analytical date are discussed in the context of the whole analytical process from collection of marine environmental samples, through handling and radiochemical separation, to the final interpretation of results. Examples include a demonstration of the contamination introduced during sediment core sectioning, contamination of sea water by a ship's pumping system, and the effect of filtration on the apparent partitioning of radionuclides between solid and liquid phases of sea water.     

Determination of lithium in wines by atomic absorption spectrometry

Lithium (10–150 ng ml^?1) in wine is determined by atomic absorption spectrometry by direct nebulization and after digestion with mixed acids. The results of methods are similar. Thirty-four wines from various Spanish provinces are analysed.
