FT-IR study of the interlamellar water confined in glycolipid nanotube walls

The local hydrogen-bonding environment of water confined in glycolipid nanotubes (LNTs) was investigated by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Using X-ray diffraction (XRD), we estimated the thickness of an interlamellar water layer, which was confined between the bilayer membranes constructing the walls of the LNTs, to be 1.3 +/- 0.3 nm. FT-IR spectroscopic measurement of the confined water showed an obvious reduction in IR absorption in both the low-energy (around 3000 cm(-1)) and high-energy regions (around 3600 cm(-1)) of the OH stretching band as compared to bulk water. The reduction around 3000 cm(-1) indicated a decrease in the relative proportion of the water molecules with a long-range network structure due to a geometrical restriction. This agrees with the results obtained for other multilamellar systems. On the other hand, the remarkable reduction around 3600 cm(-1), which was not observed in the other systems, indicated the absence of weakly hydrogen-bonded water aggregates due to the effect of sugar headgroups.     

On the category of modules of Gorenstein dimension zero

Let R be a commutative noetherian henselian non-Gorenstein local ring of depth zero. Denote by modR the category of all finitely generated R-modules, and by the full subcategory of modR consisting of all R-modules of Gorenstein dimension zero. We prove in this paper that if contains a non-free module, then it is not precovering in modR, in particular, there exist infinitely many isomorphism classes of indecomposable R-modules of Gorenstein dimension zero.     

Vacuum ultraviolet photolysis of CClF2CH2Cl

Photolysis of CClF₂CH₂Cl was studied by 147 nm vacuum ultraviolet irradiation. In the presence of NO; CF₂CH₂, CF₂CHCl, and CClF₂CN were produced. These products represent three different reaction paths; the molecular dechlorination, molecular dehydrochlorination, and chlorine radical elimination reactions. The reactant pressure and the addition gas (He or NO) pressure effects upon the product yield were studied. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.     

Dependence of turbidity oscillations of self-oscillating polymers on the selective recognition of the crown ether receptors contained in the polymer chain

The turbidity oscillations of self-oscillating polymers in the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction system depending on the crown ether receptors contained in the polymer network have been studied. The three monomers are copolymerized, namely, N-isopropylacrylamide, the metal catalyst monomer for the BZ reaction, and the crown ether receptor monomer, to prepare the self-oscillating polymers used in this study. The turbidity oscillations are characterized by monitoring the transmittance of the polymer solution in the BZ reaction system at a specific wavelength of 570 nm. The oscillations are varied by crown ether receptors used in the polymerization process, i.e., BCAm(6) or BCAm(5), for the selective recognition of specific cations between potassium and sodium ions in the solution. The selective recognition of the BCAm receptors in the polymer chain for the two ions has brought out a variation in the turbidity oscillations by a change in the hydrophilicity of the polymer chain. The oscillations of the polymer solution composed of the BCAm(5) receptor are more influenced by sodium ion, while the polymer solution of BCAm(6) receptor is affected by potassium ion. However, the oscillation patterns of the redox changes obtained by these solution systems look much alike despite the differences in the polymer chain by crown ether receptors and cations of bromate used for the BZ reaction.     

Nanoparticle preparation of quinacridone and β-carotene using near-infrared laser ablation of their crystals

Quinacridone nanoparticles with a mean size of about 200 nm are successfully prepared using nanosecond near-infrared (NIR) laser ablation of its microcrystalline powders in heavy water. The absorption spectra of the formed colloidal solutions depend on the excitation wavelengths, which is eventually ascribed to number and energy of absorbed photons. β-carotene has low photostability and is easily decomposed upon UV/VIS laser ablation of its solid, while its nanoparticles are prepared utilizing this NIR laser ablation technique. The advantage of nanoparticle preparation by NIR laser ablation is discussed.     

Structure of Irreducible Homomorphisms to/from Free Modules

The primary goal of this paper is to investigate the structure of irreducible monomorphisms to and irreducible epimorphisms from finitely generated free modules over a noetherian local ring. Then we show that over such a ring, self-vanishing of Ext and Tor for a finitely generated module admitting such an irreducible homomorphism forces the ring to be regular.     

Classifying thick subcategories of the stable category of Cohen-Macaulay modules

Various classification theorems of thick subcategories of a triangulated category have been obtained in many areas of mathematics. In this paper, as a higher-dimensional version of the classification theorem of thick subcategories of the stable category of finitely generated representations of a finite p-group due to Benson, Carlson and Rickard, we consider classifying thick subcategories of the stable category of Cohen-Macaulay modules over a Gorenstein local ring. The main result of this paper yields a complete classification of the thick subcategories of the stable category of Cohen-Macaulay modules over a local hypersurface in terms of specialization-closed subsets of the prime ideal spectrum of the ring which are contained in its singular locus.
