We present a molecular dynamics study of reentrant nematic phases using the Gay-Berne-Kihara model of a liquid crystal in nanoconfinement. At densities above those characteristic of smectic A phases, reentrant nematic phases form that are characterized by a large value of the nematic order parameter S?1. Along the nematic director these "supernematic" phases exhibit a remarkably high self-diffusivity, which exceeds that for ordinary, lower-density nematic phases by an order of magnitude. Enhancement of self-diffusivity is attributed to a decrease of rotational configurational entropy in confinement. Recent developments in the pulsed field gradient NMR technique are shown to provide favorable conditions for an experimental confirmation of our simulations. 相似文献

We consider the problem of finding the minimum of a real-valued multivariate polynomial function constrained in a compact set defined by polynomial inequalities and equalities. This problem, called polynomial optimization problem (POP), is generally nonconvex and has been of growing interest to many researchers in recent years. Our goal is to tackle POPs using decomposition, based on a partitioning procedure. The problem manipulations are in line with the pattern used in the generalized Benders decomposition, namely projection followed by relaxation. Stengle’s and Putinar’s Positivstellensätze are employed to derive the feasibility and optimality constraints, respectively. Confinement of fluids in porous materials is widely exploited in a variety of technologies, including chemical conversion by heterogeneous catalysis and adsorption separations. Important fundamental phenomena associated with many-molecule interactions occur in such systems, including a remarkably long "memory" of the past when the actual amount of molecules in the pores dramatically depends on the history of how the external conditions have been changed. We demonstrate that the intrinsic diffusivity as measured by NMR serves as an excellent probe of the history-dependent states of the confined fluid. A remarkable feature of our results are differences in diffusivity between out-of-equilibrium states with the same density within the hysteresis loop. This reflects different spatial distributions of the confined fluid that accompany the arrested equilibration of the system in this region. 相似文献
