An advanced two-step cleaning process of the Ge(001) surface for nanoscience requirements is presented. First, wet-chemical etching with a variant of the Piranha solution (H(2)SO(4), H(2)O(2), H(2)O) is used to remove contaminants as well as the native oxide layer. Second, passivation of the surface is achieved by a rapid thermal oxidation step, leading to a homogeneous protective oxide layer. The thickness of the oxide layer is tuned to be thick enough to protect the surface, yet thin enough to be completely removed by thermal treatment in ultra-high vacuum. The application of this recipe results in an outstandingly clean and atomically flat surface, with carbon contamination at the detection limit of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Scanning tunneling microscopy and electron diffraction reveal a long range ordered surface with typical terrace diameters of ~100 nm, suitable for the growth of atomic-scale nanostructures.  相似文献

We combine high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering with cluster calculations utilizing a recently derived effective magnetic scattering operator to analyze the polarization, excitation energy, and momentum-dependent excitation spectrum of the low-dimensional quantum magnet TiOCl in the range expected for orbital and magnetic excitations (0-2.5?eV). Ti 3d orbital excitations yield complete information on the temperature-dependent crystal-field splitting. In the spin-Peierls phase we observe a dispersive two-spinon excitation and estimate the inter- and intradimer magnetic exchange coupling from a comparison to cluster calculations.  相似文献

We report detailed measurements of the low temperature magnetic phase diagram of Er2Ti2O7. Heat capacity and time-of-flight neutron scattering studies of single crystals reveal unconventional low-energy states. Er3+ magnetic ions reside on a pyrochlore lattice in Er2Ti2O7, where local XY anisotropy and antiferromagnetic interactions give rise to a unique frustrated system. In zero field, the ground state exhibits coexisting short and long-range order, accompanied by soft collective spin excitations previously believed to be absent. The application of finite magnetic fields tunes the ground state continuously through a landscape of noncollinear phases, divided by a zero temperature phase transition at micro{0}H{c} approximately 1.5 T. The characteristic energy scale for spin fluctuations is seen to vanish at the critical point, as expected for a second order quantum phase transition driven by quantum fluctuations.  相似文献

The rate of the reaction of dialkyl- and alkyl-phenyl-sulphides with TsNHCl increases with the increasing +I effect of the S-substituents, while the steric effect is only of minor importance. Rate constants of the reaction of dialkyl sulphides can be correlated with the Taft equation (?* = ?1.96, δ = 0.285). The effect of ring size of cyclic sulphides on the reaction is discussed. The change of the rate constants with varying S-alkyl substituents is in agreement with a sterically unhindered electrophilic addition of Cl+ on bivalent sulphur, leading to chlorosulphonium ion. Sulphimides and sulphoxides are formed from the chlorosulphonium intermediates in the subsequent SN-type reactions with different steric control.  相似文献

We demonstrate optical tuning of the scattering length in a Bose-Einstein condensate as predicted by Fedichev et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 2913 (1996)]. In our experiment, atoms in a 87Rb condensate are exposed to laser light which is tuned close to the transition frequency to an excited molecular state. By controlling the power and detuning of the laser beam we can change the atomic scattering length over a wide range. In view of laser-driven atomic losses, we use Bragg spectroscopy as a fast method to measure the scattering length of the atoms.  相似文献

Pseudomonas putida L-methionine γ-lyase (PpMGL) has been recognized as an efficient anticancer agent, however, its antigenicity and stability remain as critical challenges for its clinical use. From our studies, Aspergillus flavipes L-methionine γ-lyase (AfMGL) displayed more affordable biochemical properties than PpMGL. Thus, the objective of this work was to comparatively assess the functional properties of AfMGL and PpMGL via stability of their internal aldimine linkage, tautomerism of pyridoxal 5′-phosphate (PLP) and structural stability responsive to physicochemical factors. The internal Schiff base of AfMGL and PpMGL have the same stability to hydroxylamine and human serum albumin. Acidic pHs resulted in strong cleavage of the internal Schiff base, inducing the unfolding of MGLs, compared to neutral-alkaline pHs. At λ 280 nm excitation, both AfMGL and PpMGL have identical fluorescence emission spectra at λ 335 nm for the intrinsic tryptophan and λ 560 nm for the internal Schiff base. The maximum PLP tautomeric shift of ketoenamine to enolimine was detected at acidic pH causing complete enzyme unfolding, subunits dissociation and tautomeric shift of intrinsic PLP, rather than neutral-alkaline ones. The T m of AfMGL and PpMGL in presence of thermal stabilizer/ destabilizer was assayed by DSF. The T m of AfMGL and PpMGL was 73.1 °C and 74.4 °C, respectively, suggesting the higher proximity to the tertiary structure of both enzymes. The T m of AfMGL and PpMGL was slightly increased by trehalose and EDTA in contrast to guanidine HCl and urea. The active site and PLP-binding domains are identically conserved in both AfMGL and PpMGL.  相似文献

High-resolution x-ray scattering measurements on single crystal Tb2Ti2O7 reveal finite structural correlations at low temperatures. This geometrically frustrated pyrochlore is known to exhibit a spin-liquid or cooperative paramagnetic state at temperatures below approximately 20 K. Parametric studies of structural Bragg peaks appropriate to the Fd3[over ]m space group of Tb2Ti2O7 reveal substantial broadening and peak intensity reduction in the temperature regime 20 K to 300 mK. We also observe a small, anomalous lattice expansion on cooling below a density maximum at approximately 18 K. These measurements are consistent with the development of fluctuations above a cooperative Jahn-Teller, cubic-tetragonal phase transition at very low temperatures.  相似文献
