Nitration of various aromatic compounds utilising guanidinium nitrate in 85% sulfuric acid as a nitrating agent has been studied.     

Integrability of the Problem of the Motion of a Cylinder and a Vortex in an Ideal Fluid

In this paper, we obtain a nonlinear Poisson structure and two first integrals in the problem of the plane motion of a circular cylinder and n point vortices in an ideal fluid. This problem is a priori not Hamiltonian; specifically, in the case n= 1 (i.e., in the problem of the interaction of a cylinder with a vortex) it is integrable.     

Quest for inosito-inositols: synthesis of novel, annulated and conformationally locked inositols

A new family of annulated inositols (inosito-inositols) has been conceptualized. Naphthalene has been elaborated into novel cyclohexa-annulated neo- and chiro-inositols, with two additional hydroxyl functionalities, through a series of stereoselective oxyfunctionalization protocols. The trans-ring fusion present in these new annulated inositols ensures conformational locking.     

Structure of solid monolayers and multilayers of n -hexane on graphite

We present all-atom molecular dynamics simulations ofn-hexane on the basal plane of graphite at monolayer and multilayer coverages. In keeping with experimental data, we find the presence of ordered adsorbed layers both at single monolayer coverage and when the adsorbed layer coexists with excess liquid adsorbate. Using a simulation method that does not impose any particular periodicity on the adsorbed layer, we quantitatively compare our results to the results of neutron diffraction experiments and find a structural transition from a uniaxially incommensurate lattice to a fully commensurate structure on increasing the coverage from a monolayer to a multilayer. The zig-zag backbone planes of all the alkane molecules lie parallel to the graphite surface at the multilayer coverage, while a few molecules are observed to attain the perpendicular orientation at monolayer coverage. Thermal conductivity of crystalline chrysotile asbestos

The thermal conductivity of crystalline chrysotile asbestos made up of hollow tubular Mg₃Si₂O₅(OH)₄ filaments is measured in the range 5–300 K. The paper discusses the possibility of using this material in studies of the thermal conductivity of thin filaments of metals and semiconductors incorporated into the channels of crystalline chrysotile asbestos tubes.     

Asymptotic expansions for eigenvalues in the presence of small inhomogeneities

We provide a rigorous derivation of an asymptotic formula for perturbations in the eigenvalues caused by the presence of a finite number of inhomogeneities of small diameter with conductivity different from the background conductivity. Copyright © 2003 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

A representation of the Belavkin equation via Feynman path integrals

 The Belavkin equation, describing the continuous measurement of the position of a quantum particle, is studied. A rigorous representation of its solution by means of an infinite dimensional oscillatory integral (Feynman path integral) defined on the complex Cameron-Martin space is given. Structure and properties of the mesophase of syndiotactic polystyrene. II. Effect of stepwise extraction on the preparation of the mesophase

In this study, a novel stepwise extraction method has been examined. The guest molecules housed between the helices of the clathrate δ form of syndiotactic polystyrene can be removed completely with this method. A systematic study of the preparation of a solvent‐free mesophase (emptied clathrate) membrane, its helical and residual solvent contents, and its structural transformations has been performed. In this first attempt, an enhancement in the TTGG helical content has been observed in the extracted membrane, and a conceptual mechanism is proposed. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
