The identification of 10 and 11 substituted 7H-benzimidazo[2,1-a]benz[de]isoquinolin-7-ones through 1N NOE studies on their methyl p-toluenesulfonate salts

The spectral similarities of 10 and 11 substituted 7H-benzimidazo[2,1-a]benz[de]isoquinolin-7-ones hinder the identification of the individual isomers. Preparation of the 13-methyl p-toluenesulfonate salts of these compounds has allowed the assignment by the use of NOE techniques. Saturation of the N-methyl caused an NOE at H-12. The coupling pattern of H-12 then provides identification of the compound.     

小分子配体诱导合成N,N-二苄基二硫代氨基甲酸镉(II)配合物及晶体结构

4,4'-联吡啶与二苄基二硫代氨基甲酸镉配合物[Cd(DBTC)₂]₂ (1)反应得到加合物[Cd(DBTC)₂(4,4'-bipy)] (2) (DBTC＝N,N-二苄基二硫代氨基甲酸), 通过晶体结构分析及红外光谱等研究其结构与性质. 结果表明: 引入小分子配体会破坏[Cd(DBTC)₂]₂ (1)的二聚结构, 加入吡啶则得到单核的吡啶加合物[Cd(DBTC)₂py] (3), 而引入4,4'-联吡啶后其结构变为新型的一维链状结构的配位聚合物2, 这种结构在二硫代氨基甲酸金属配合物中少见报道. 也比较了不同配体如吡啶及4,4'-联吡啶对Cd(II)及Zn(II)配合物结构的影响.     

The Effects of Methylene Blue and Oxygen Concentration on the Photoinactivation of Qβ Bacteriophage

Abstract— Concentration effects of methylene blue (MB) and oxygen on the photoinactivation rate of Qβ bacteriophage were examined. The effect of initial virus concentration was verified on the similar f2 phage. The inactivation rate, k , is an increasing function of MB and O₂ concentration and shows saturation with respect to MB concentration. Thus the results suggest that MB must adsorb to Qβ sites and oxygen must be present for photoinactivation to occur. The inactivation rate is independent of the initial number of phage particles present before inactivation, indicating that inactivation does not depend upon interaction among viral particles or on surface effects. The results indicate that at least two different viral phenotypes exist within the wild-type Qβ and f2 populations: one susceptible and the other resistant.     

Renormalized inner projection—a case study: The octic oscillator

The upper and lower bounds of a harmonic oscillator with an octic perturbation are studied with the use of renormalized inner projection. It is shown that this relatively simple technique works even in the infinite coupling constant limit. Symbolic computation is very convenient and useful in these types of problems, where only a finite number of operations are required.     

An Asymmetric Synthesis of L-694,458, a Human Leukocyte Elastase Inhibitor, via Novel Enzyme Resolution of beta-Lactam Esters

A convergent synthesis of [S-(R,S)]-2-[4-[(4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)carbonyl]phenoxy]-3,3-diethyl-N-[1-[3,4-(methylenedioxy)phenyl]butyl]-4-oxo-1-azetidinecarboxamide (L-694,458, 1), a potent human leukocyte elastase inhibitor, was achieved via chiral synthesis of key intermediates: (S)-3,3-diethyl-4-[4'-[(N-methylpiperazin-1-yl)carbonylphenoxy]-2-azetidinone (2) and (R)-alpha-propylpiperonyl isocyanate (3). Synthesis of beta-lactam 2 was achieved by a novel enantioselective lipase hydrolysis of ester 5 to produce (S)-3,3-diethyl-4-(4'-carboxyphenoxy)-2-azetidinone (6) (60% yield, three cycles, 93% ee) with isolation, epimerization, and recycling of the undesired (R)-ester 5. Isocyanate 3 was prepared by chiral addition of Zn(n-Pr)(2) to piperonal (98% yield, 99.2% ee), azide displacement and reduction to (R)-alpha-propylpiperonylamine (11) (58% yield, 85% ee), crystallization as the D-pyroglutamic acid salt (92% yield, 98.2% ee), and isocyanate formation (98% yield) with phosgene.     

THE EFFECTS OF LIQUID HOLDING ON NEAR-UV(300–400 nm) IRRADIATED ESCHERICHIA COLI STRAINS DIFFERING IN NEAR AND FAR-UV RADIATION SENSITIVITY

Abstract— Stationary phase cells from four Escherichia coli strains differing in near- (nur vs. nur ₊) and far-UV (recAl vs. recA₊) radiation sensitivity were subjected to near-UV radiation (NUV) in 0.85% saline. Although the NUV-irradiated cultures yielded increased colony numbers following 24 h of liquid holding (LH), a fluctuation test for each experiment showed that the observed increases were not due to recovery but were in fact due to cell multiplication. The decline in viability observed after NUV with liquid holding using the fluctuation test was equivalent in strains RT2, 3 and 4 while the decline observed with RT1 was less marked. The discrepancy between LH involving cell densities of 10₈-10₉ and 1–4 cells/m/ can be resolved by assuming that with dense cell suspensions, NUV-induced membrane damage leads to leakage or lysis, supplying sufficient nutrients to allow growth of undamaged, surviving cells.     

13C-NMR. Spectroscopy of Naturally Occuring Substances. XLII. Conformational analysis of quebrachamine-like indole alkaloids and related substances

The ¹³C shifts of 16α- and 16β-substituted derivatives of quebrachamine, 14,15-dehydroquebrachamine, cleavamine, 15,20α-dihydrocleavamine and 15,20β-dihydrocleavamine are determined and correlated with possible conformations of these tetracycles. The method of analysis of the C(16) configuration of these compounds, which emanated from this study, is used for the determination of the configuration of the site of coupling of vindoline and cleavamine β-chloroindolenine.     

Crystal structure of supramolecular complexes formed by 18-crown-6 andcis-anti-cis-dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 (host) with 3,4-diaminofurazane (guest)

An X-ray—diffraction study is reported for two molecular complexes containing 3,4-diamino-1,2,5-oxadiazole as guest (G) with 18-crown-6 (18-C-6) andcis-anti-cis-dicyclohexano-18-crown-6 (DCH-6B) as host. Both complexes are of the polymeric-chain structure with the guest molecule bridging two crown neighbours. ComplexI: [18-C-6*G*H₂O], 111, monoclinic,P2₁/n,a=8.171(1),b=15.042(2),c=16.209(6) Å, =101.15(2)°, finalR-factor 0.068. ComplexII: [DCH-6B*G], 11, monoclinicC2/c,a=21.212(4),b=9.380(2),c=13.049(3) Å, =108.61(3)°, finalR 0.047.     

Synthesis of substituted imidazoles via organocatalysis

A one-pot synthesis of substituted imidazoles is described. The cornerstone of this methodology involves the thiazolium-catalyzed addition of an aldehyde to an acyl imine to generate the corresponding alpha-ketoamide in situ followed by ring closure to the imidazole in a one-pot sequence. The extension of this methodology to the one-pot synthesis of substituted oxazoles and thiazoles is also described. [reaction: see text]     

Production of octadienal in the marine diatom Skeletonema costatum

[reaction: see text] Marine diatoms produce alpha,beta,gamma,delta-unsaturated aldehydes that have detrimental effects on the reproduction of their natural predators. The production of these defensive metabolites is suggested to involve enzymatic oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. In this paper, feeding experiments with labeled precursor provide clear evidence in support of the origin of octadienals 1 and 2 from 6,9,12-hexadecatrienoic acid (5), thus proving the involvement of novel lipoxygenase/lyase activity for the oxidation of C(16) fatty acids.
