Observation of B(s)0-->K+ K- and measurements of branching fractions of charmless two-body decays of B0 and B(s)0 mesons in pp collisions at square root of s = 1.96 TeV

We search for decays of the type B(s)0-->h+ h'- (where h,h' = K or pi) in 180 pb(-1) of pp collisions collected at the Tevatron by the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab. We report the first observation of the new mode B(s)0-->K+ K- with a yield of 236+/-32 events, corresponding to (fs/fd) x B(B(s)0-->K+ K-)/B(B0-->K+ pi-) = 0.46+/-0.08stat+/-0.07syst, where fs/fd is the ratio of production fractions of B(s)0 and B0. We find results in agreement with world averages for the B0 modes, and set the following new limits at 90% C.L.: B(B(s)0-->K- pi+) < 5.6 x 10(-6) and B(B(s)0-->pi+ pi-) < 1.7 x 10(-6).     

Search for neutral, long-lived particles decaying into two muons in pp[over] collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV

We present a search for a neutral particle, pair produced in pp[over] collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV, which decays into two muons and lives long enough to travel at least 5 cm before decaying. The analysis uses approximately 380 pb(-1) of data recorded with the D0 detector. The background is estimated to be about one event. No candidates are observed, and limits are set on the pair-production cross section times branching fraction into dimuons + X for such particles. For a mass of 10 GeV and lifetime of 4x10(-11) s, we exclude values greater than 0.14 pb (95% C.L.). These results are used to limit the interpretation of NuTeV's excess of dimuon events.     

Lattice disorder and size-induced kondo behavior in CeAl2 and CePt(2+x)

When the size of CeAl2 and CePt(2+x) particles is reduced to the nanometer scale, antiferromagnetism is suppressed and Kondo behavior predominates, with the Kondo temperature T(K) either decreasing (CeAl2) or increasing (CePt(2+x)) relative to the bulk. Local structure measurements show that these nanoparticles are significantly distorted. While such distortions should strongly affect magnetic and electronic properties, we find they cannot explain the observed changes in T(K). Other size-induced changes to the electronic structure must, therefore, play a significant role.     

A new enantiomerization mechanism for tripodal penta-coordinate Zn(II)(nta) complexes. Theoretical clarification of the observed 1H NMR spectrum

Based on DFT calculations (RB3LYP/LANL2DZp), the unexpected single-line 1H NMR spectrum of Zn(II)(nta), nta = 2,2',2'-nitrilotriacetate, can be ascribed to a non-dissociative enantiomerization process (deltadeltadelta<=>lambdalambdalambda) from C3viaC3v to C3 symmetry. The energy barrier is rather low and depends to a lesser extent on the nature of the co-ligand in [Zn(nta)X]2- (X: H-, CH3- NH2-, OCH3-, F-, Cl-, Br-, I-) and [Zn(nta)Y]- (Y: NCH, CO, N2, O(CH3)2), but more so on the overall charge of the complex. The energy barrier for enantiomerization of [Zn(nta)X]2- is between 5.7 and 6.7 kcal mol-1, and for [Zn(nta)Y]- between 2.2 and 3.1 kcal mol-1.     

Unsymmetrically N,N'-substituted saturated carbenes: synthesis, reactivity and preparation of a rhodium(I) carbene complex

A versatile synthesis of unsymmetrically N,N'-substituted saturated carbenes is described. The novel racemic imidazolidin-2-ylidenes rac-5 have been synthesized by reductive desulfurization of the corresponding imidazolidin-2-thiones rac-4. The thiones were prepared in two reaction steps from aldimines and secondary amines. Three different substituents at N1, N3 and C4 of the five-membered N-heterocyclic ring can be introduced by choice of suitable aldimines and secondary amines. The dimerization behaviour (diaminocarbene/enetetramine equilibrium) for the unsymmetrically N,N'-substituted imidazolidin-2-ylidenes has been investigated by NMR spectroscopy. Unsymmetrically N-iPr and N-iBu substituted N-heterocyclic carbenes undergo a slow dimerization, whereas N-tBu substituted derivatives are stable as monomeric carbenes indefinitely. The carbene ligand rac-5d has been coordinated to rhodium(I) to give the square-planar rhodium carbene complex [Cl(cod)Rh(rac-5d)]rac-6d which has been characterized by an X-ray diffraction analysis.     

Development of a convenient new synthetic route to [3]ferrocenophanones

[3]Ferrocenophanone rac-8 was prepared by several non-Friedel-Crafts pathways starting from a Mannich-type coupling of 1,1'-diacetylferrocene followed by catalytic hydrogenation. Hydride abstraction from the resulting alpha-dimethylamino[3]ferrocenophane rac-14 with B(C6F5)3 followed by hydrolysis gave the ketone rac-8. Several variants of the Sommelet reaction, using ethylglyoxylate, formaldehyde or hexamethylenetetramine (urotropine) as the "oxidizing" reagent gave the alpha-[3]ferrocenophanone 8 in good to excellent yield. Some variants of these reactions were also used for the preparation of the pure enantiomer (R)-8. The electrochemical behaviour of 8 has been investigated and compared with related derivatives.     

Evidence for the exclusive decay B(c)+- --> J/psi pi+- and measurement of the mass of the B(c)+- meson

We report the first evidence for a fully reconstructed decay mode of the B(c)+- meson in the channel B(c)+- --> J/psi pi+-, with J/psi --> mu+ mu-. The analysis is based on an integrated luminosity of 360 pb(-1) in pp collisions at 1.96 TeV center of mass energy collected by the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We observe 14.6 +/- 4.6 signal events with a background of 7.1 +/- 0.9 events, and a fit to the J/psi pi+-mass spectrum yields a B(c)+- mass of 6285.7 +/- 5.3(stat) +/- 1.2(syst) MeV/c2. The probability of a peak of this magnitude occurring by random fluctuation in the search region is estimated as 0.012%.     

Measurement of the inclusive jet cross section using the kT algorithm in pp collisions at (square root s)=1.96 TeV

We report on a measurement of the inclusive jet production cross section as a function of the jet transverse momentum in pp collisions at (square root s)=1.96 TeV using data collected with the upgraded Collider Detector at Fermilab in run II, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 385 pb-1. Search for neutral Higgs bosons of the minimal supersymmetric standard model decaying to tau pairs in pp collisions at square root of s = 1.96 TeV

We present a search for neutral supersymmetric Higgs bosons decaying to tau pairs produced in pp collisions at square root of s = 1.96 TeV. The data, corresponding to 310 pb(-1) integrated luminosity, were collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab in run II of the Tevatron. No significant excess above the standard model backgrounds is observed. We set exclusion limits on the production cross section times branching fraction to tau pairs for Higgs boson masses in the range from 90 to 250 GeV/c2.     

Annulation of primary amines to piperazines and diazaspirocycles utilizing alpha-methyl benzyl resin

The microwave-assisted solid-phase synthesis of piperazines, 3,9-diazaspiro[5.5]undecanes and 2,9-diazaspiro[5.5]undecanes is reported. The synthesis relies on the direct annulation of primary amines with resin-bound bismesylates. Critical to the success of this chemistry was the development of alpha-methyl benzyl carbamate resin linker. This resin permits the cleavage of the heterocycles under mildly acidic conditions, free of contaminating linker-derived N-alkylated byproducts.
