Parity of the band head at 3710 keV in 99Rh using clover detector as compton polarimeter

Clover detector has been used as a Compton polarimeter to measure the linear polarization of γ-rays produced in heavy ion fusion reaction. The polarization sensitivity of the clover detector has been measured over γ-ray energies ranging from 386 to 1368 ke V. The E1 multipolarity of the 1117 keV transition in ⁹⁹Rh has been established using this polarimeter. This has resulted in the assignment of negative parity to the band head at 3710 keV in ⁹⁹Rh.     

An alternative approach to determine the spot-size of a multi-mode laser beam and its application to diode laser beams

An alternative approach is suggested to determine the spot-size of a multi-mode laser beam. It has been shown by simulations that the suggested approach can give the beam quality factor and characteristic radius with less than 5% error. Unlike the power content method, the proposed method is applicable to the beams even with diameter one tenth of the CCD size. The new approach has been applied to a multi-mode diode laser output and it is shown that the ABCD matrix analysis can be used for beam propagation, with the measured parameters of the laser.     

Operator self similar stochastic processes in Rd

Operator self similar stochastic processes taking values in a finite dimensional Euclidean space are introduced and some of their properties are studied.     

Effect of process parameters on the properties of plasma-sprayed superconducting Y1Ba2Cu3O7−x coatings

A study on the effect of powder, spray and coating parameters on superconducting properties of plasma-sprayed Y₁Ba₂Cu₃O_7–x coatings has been carried out. Optimised spray parameters to yield strong, adherent and dense coatings on many substrates including AISI 304 SS and alumina have been obtained. Coatings show superconductivity after oxygen annealing at 950°C for an hour. Coatings thinner than 100 m do not show zero resistivity down to 77 K due to weak links between granular superconductors. Coatings prepared with fine powder have superior superconducting properties, viz. higherT _c andJ _c values than coarse powder coatings. The choice of substrate material strongly affects theJ _c values.     

Nonenzymatic, template-directed ligation of oligoribonucleotides is highly regioselective for the formation of 3'-5' phosphodiester bonds

We have found that nonenzymatic, template-directed ligation reactions of oligoribonucleotides display high selectivity for the formation of 3'-5' rather than 2'-5' phosphodiester bonds. Formation of the 3'-5'-linked product is favored regardless of the metal ion catalyst or the leaving group, and for several different ligation junction sequences. The degree of selectivity depends on the leaving group: the ratio of 3'-5'- to 2'-5'-linked products was 10-15:1 when the 5'-phosphate was activated as the imidazolide, and 60-80:1 when the 5'-phosphate was activated by the formation of a 5'-triphosphate. Comparison of oligonucleotide ligation reactions with previously characterized single nucleotide primer extension reactions suggests that the strong preference for 3'-5'-linkages in oligonucleotide ligation is primarily due to occurence of ligation within the context of an extended Watston-Crick duplex. The ability of RNA to correctly self-assemble by template-directed ligation is an intrinsic consequence of its chemical structure and need not be imposed by an external catalyst (i.e., an enzyme polymerase); RNA therefore provides a reasonable structural basis for a self-replicating system in a prebiological world.
