Thermodynamics of the dissociation of Bis H+ in seawater from 5 to 40°C

Electromotive-force measurements of cells without transference were used to determine the dissociation constant of the protonated form of the weak base 2-amino-2-methyl-1, 3-propanediol (Bis) in synthetic seawaters corresponding to salinities of 20, 35, and 45. Hydrogen electrodes and silver-silver chloride electrodes were used, together with standard potentials determined in an earlier investigation. The pK increases in linear fashion with the salinity (S) of the medium, for values of S from 0 to 45. The solvent effect is given by 8.802+0.00378S at 25°C with a mean deviation of 0.001. The medium effect of seawater on H° at 25°C is less than 200 cal-mol^–1 and less than 0.2 cal-^oK-mol^–1 on S°.     

Advances in ultra-high load polymer-supported peptide synthesis with phenolic supports: 2. Use of ‘hydrazinolysis-hplc’ to check for racemization on c-terminal amino acid loading and to determine peptide homogeneity during synthesis with selectively labile c-terminal anchoring linkages

2, 4-Dinitrophenyl-L-phenylalanine has been coupled to L-, D-, and DL-amino acid phenyl esters pendant upon a polymer matrix. The esters had been prepared by di-isopropylcarbodiimide-mediated condensation, catalyzed by 4-dimethylaminopyridine. Reverse phase high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC), using elution solvents consisting of 10 vol.-% trifluoroacetic acid in water/acetonitrile mixtures, has been used to investigate the 2,4-dinitrophenyl L-L and L-D dipeptide mixtures obtained on hydrazinolysis of each of the dipeptide-matrix assemblies. ‘Hydrazinolysis-HPLC’ has been used also to determine intermediate peptide homogeneity in ultra-high load solid (gel) phase synthesis with Boc amino acids. Cross-linked poly(N-[2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethyl]acrylamide) and two derived polymers incorporating spacer groups have been used as supports. The spacer groups made possible peptide C-terminal attachment by either HF-labile benzyl ester or HF-labile cyclohexyl ester bonds, while still incorporating the phenolic ester linkage susceptible to rapid hydrazinolytic scission.     

Spin-coupled wavefunctions

A method recently introduced for constructing spin-coupled wave-functions is extended to deal with the singlet and triplet states of four-electron systems. The approach is applied to LiH (¹Σ, ³Σ), Be (¹ S) and BeH⁺ (¹Σ) using a simple one-configuration model, in which the orbitals are expressed in elliptical coordinates.     

Transient two‐layer thin‐film flow

The transient two‐layer thin‐film planar flow is investigated theoretically in this study. The interplay among inertia, viscous and surface/interfacial tension is emphasized. It is found that the film and interface profiles, as well as the flow field, are strongly influenced by the viscosity ratio, velocity and film thickness ratios at inception, and the surface‐to‐interfacial tension ratio. The nonlinear stability of the steady state reveals the formation of a solitary wave after flow inception, which propagates in the form of a convective instability, with the steady state recovered only in the tail (upstream) region of the wave. In the presence of surface/interfacial tension, surface modulation appears, which grows in wavelength and amplitude with position. The flow is found to be particularly stable for higher viscosity of the lower film layer. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Synthesis and palladium-catalysed isomerisation of fused polycyclic tetrahydrofurans: efficient and stereoselective one-pot domino construction of functionalised bridged bicyclo[n.2.1] ring systems

A new one-pot domino reaction for a general entry to functionalised bridged bicyclo[n.2.1] ring systems from α ,α’-diactivated cyclic ketones and trans-1,4-dihalides is described. The sequence combines a base promoted C–O cycloalkylation reaction leading to fused polycyclic enol ethers and their in situ palladium-catalysed isomerisation.
