Synthesis of (−)-elemoxide,a commercially important fragrance compound

(?)-Elemoxide, a fragrant compound was synthesised using commercially available elemol in four steps with overall yield of 32%. The cyclic ether skeleton was constructed via intramolecular hydroalkoxylation using I₂ and PhSiH₃ catalytic system. Also, intramolecular oxymercuration-demercuration was employed as an alternate approach for cyclization. The various regioselective strategies involving epoxidation of alkene, reduction of epoxide and intramolecular cyclization were the highlights of the work. The key intermediate diol serves as a versatile intermediate for the synthesis of elemoxide and elemene.     

Array of electrodeposited Ru-decorated TiO<Subscript>2</Subscript> nanotubes with enhanced photoresponse

Although TiO₂ anatase phase has been widely chosen as the main photocatalyst, it presents high electron/hole recombination rate. However, today, what is sought is a semiconductor material with enhanced photocatalytic activity with higher photon to electron conversion efficiency by introduction of electrons trap dopants. In this paper, TiO₂ nanotubes arrays obtained by anodization of Ti substrates were decorated with Ru via electrodeposition, and their photo-response was investigated. First, voltammetric experiments were performed to elucidate the route of Ru reduction on the TiO₂ surface and to select the range of potentials for Ru deposition. The reduction potentials were used for controlling the amount of Ru distributed all over the surface. Although Ru was electrodeposited at potentials over the range from ??0.025 to ??0.188 V vs. Ag/AgCl, the deposition of 3.7 mC cm^?2 at ??0.100 V for 30 min resulted in a tenfold greater photocurrent when compared to the recorded photocurrent for the undecorated TiO₂ nanotubes array. Next, Ru-decorated TiO₂ nanotubes with a length of 323?±?18 nm and inner and outer diameters of 91 and 104 nm, respectively, were characterized using SEM-WDS, SEM-FEG, XRD, and XPS. UV-Vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) measurements, which revealed a maximum PL emission at 445 nm, showed that for the array of Ru-decorated TiO₂ nanotubes, the electron-hole recombination may be effectively inhibited by the presence of ruthenium electrodeposited, which can make this photocatalyst even more attractive for environmental applications. The performances of the TiO₂ and Ru-decorated TiO₂ catalysts were compared in heterogeneous photocatalysis experiments for color removal of an azo-dye, which presented a pseudo-first-order rate constant more than twofold greater for the Ru-decorated TiO₂ catalysts.

On Dupin Hypersurfaces in R5 Parametrized by Lines of Curvature

We provide a complete local characterization of Dupin hypersurfaces in R⁵, with four distinct principal curvatures, parametrized by lines of curvature. Such hypersurfaces are given in terms of the principal curvatures and vector valued functions that describe plane curves. We include explicit examples of such Dupin hypersurfaces which are irreducible and have nonconstant Lie curvature.

Optimal investment with two-factor uncertainty

This paper presents a real options model to value the option to invest in a project contingent on two stochastic factors. A general sensitivity analysis is conducted highlighting the importance of the variance and correlation between the two variables. A higher correlation is shown to increase always the values of the trigger, the active project and the option. The impact of uncertainty is more complex and depends on the assumption about which variables adjust and the correlation between the variables and the market.     

Decay rates for Bresse system with arbitrary nonlinear localized damping

In this paper we consider a vibrating system of Bresse type, in a one-dimensional bounded domain with nonlinear localized damping mechanisms acting in all the three wave equations. We obtain some rates of decay for its solutions with no restrictions around the coefficients as well as the condition of equal-speed wave propagation. A new result concerning an internal observability for the conservative system was also proved in order to reach the asymptotics above.     

Microwave-assisted digestion with a single reaction chamber for mineral fertilizer analysis by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry

A systematic approach is proposed to evaluate microwave-assisted digestion in a single reaction chamber for the simultaneous determination of elements in the mineral fertilizer and raw material by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. A reference material was digested using 12 acid mixtures containing nitric, hydrochloric, orthophosphoric, hydrofluoric or boric acid. Principal components analysis was applied for data treatment. Three digestion procedures based on diluted acids exhibited the most accurate results, with relative errors for reference values ranging from ?15% to +?9%. Limits of quantification were in the range of 0.2?mg cadmium kg^?1 up to 1000?mg aluminum kg^?1.
