Sharp estimates in terms of moduli of smoothness for compound cubature rules

Summary In 1980 Dahmen-DeVore-Scherer introduced a modulus of continuity which turns out to reflect invariance properties of compound cubature rules effectively. Accordingly, sharp error bounds are derived, the existence of relevant counterexamples being a consequence of a quantitative resonance principle, established previously.     

On the optimal allocation of two active redundancies in a two-component series system

Components C₁ and C₂ form a series system. Suppose we can allocate the spare R₁ in parallel with C₁ and the spare R₂ in parallel with C₂, or otherwise, allocate R₁ with C₂ and R₂ with C₁. In this paper, we compare these two options using hazard rate ordering.     

Scattering of solitons for the Schrödinger equation coupled to a particle

We establish soliton-like asymptotics for finite energy solutions to the Schrödinger equation coupled to a nonrelativistic classical particle. Any solution with initial state close to the solitary manifold converges to a sum of a travelling wave and an outgoing free wave. The convergence holds in global energy norm. The proof uses spectral theory and the symplectic projection onto the solitary manifold in the Hilbert phase space.     

Anisotropy of two-photon absorption in gallium selenide at 1064 nm

The Bridgman method is used to grow single crystals of ε-GaSe. The two-photon absorption (TPA) coefficient β was measured for especially un-doped crystals at room temperature for the ordinary o-ray (β_⊥) and extraordinary e-ray (β_∥) using single-wavelength excitation by a Nd:YVO₄ laser at 1.064 μm with a pulse duration of 10 ps and a repetition rate of 81 MHz. No large anisotropy was observed for the TPA coefficients between the two geometries. The TPA coefficients were found to be β_⊥ = 1.07 × 10⁻⁹ cm/W and β_∥ = 1.88 × 10⁻⁹ cm/W. It was found that doping slightly increases the TPA coefficient. The value of the TPA for crystals doped with 0.5 at.% of Tl is β_⊥ = 7.56 × 10⁻⁹ cm/W.     

Spatial structure of acousto-optic phase matching in uniaxial crystals

The spatial structure of Bragg angles and the transfer functions of an acousto-optic cell are calculated for the cases of isotropic and anisotropic light diffraction in a uniaxial crystal. Their change with ultrasound frequency is traced. The possibility of image processing by acousto-optic filtration of the spatial spectrum of an image is considered. The results of experimental visualization of the transfer functions of a calcium molybdate crystal cell are presented.     

Carbon precipitation and diffusion in SiGeC alloys under silicon self-interstitial injection

In this work we investigate the diffusion and precipitation of supersaturated substitutional carbon in 200-nm-thick SiGeC layers buried under a silicon cap layer of 40 nm. The samples were annealed in either inert (N₂) or oxidizing (O₂) ambient at 850 °C for times ranging from 2 to 10 h. The silicon self-interstitial (I) flux coming from the surface under oxidation enhances the C diffusion with respect to the N₂-annealed samples. In the early stages of the oxidation process, the loss of C from the SiGeC layer by diffusion across the layer/cap interface dominates. This phenomenon saturates after an initial period (2–4 h), which depends on the C concentration. This saturation is due to the formation and growth of C-containing precipitates that are promoted by the I injection and act as a sink for mobile C atoms. The influence of carbon concentration on the competition between precipitation and diffusion is discussed. Observation of dielectronic satellites in the K-spectrum of argon ions in plasma produced by femtosecond laser pulses

The satellite structure of 1s2p ^1,3 P ₁-1s ²¹ S ₀ lines of the He-like argon ion in plasma produced by a 45-fs laser pulse in a gas-jet cluster target is measured with a high spectral resolution. Radiation transitions 2p → 1s from autoionizing states (AISs) are detected for ions ranging from Li-like to F-like. The spectrum observed is theoretically simulated with the use of the spectroscopic data for the AISs of multicharged ions obtained within the multiconfiguration relativistic Hartree-Fock method. Good agreement with experimental data is obtained when the main population channels of these states are taken into account for typical values of cluster-target plasma parameters.
