Electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy has been used to examine archaeological materials in terms of identifying and quantifying the effects of ancient heating or charting and as a means of establishing thermal profiles of free-spin species with the aim of assessing the extent of ancient heat treatment and as an aid to source-type studies. The utilisation of the pyrolytically induced radical carbon signal in flint, bone and crop remains is discussed in the context of related ESR work on coal, charcoal and similar materials and the relevance of ESR dating techniques to developing an understanding of ancient pyrotechnology is outlined.  相似文献

Full characterization of the first homologous series of dimolybdenum paddlewheel compounds having electronic configurations of the types sigma(2)pi(4)delta(x), x = 2, 1, 0, and Mo-Mo bond orders of 4, 3.5, and 3, respectively, has been accomplished with the guanidinate-type ligand hpp (hpp = the anion of 1,3,4,6,7,8-hexahydro-2H-pyrimido[1,2-a]pyrimidine). Essentially quantitative oxidation of Mo(2)(hpp)(4), 1, by CH(2)Cl(2) gives Mo(2)(hpp)(4)Cl, 2. The halide in 2 can be replaced by reaction with TlBF(4) to produce Mo(2)(hpp)(4)(BF(4)), 3. Further oxidation of 2 by AgBF(4) produces Mo(2)(hpp)(4)ClBF(4), 4. The change from bond order 4 (in 1) to 3.5 in Mo(2)(hpp)(4)Cl is accompanied by an increase in the Mo-Mo bond length of 0.061 to 2.1280(4) A. A further increase of 0.044 A in the Mo-Mo distance to 2.172(1) A is observed as the bond order decreases to 3 in 4. At the same time, the Mo-N distances decrease smoothly as the oxidation state of the Mo atoms increases. Electrochemical studies have shown two chemically reversible processes at very negative potentials, E(1)(1/2)= -0.444 V and E(2)(1/2)= -1.271 V versus Ag/AgCl. These correspond to the processes Mo(2)(6+/5+) and Mo(2)(5+/4+), respectively. The latter potential is displaced by over 1.5 V relative to those of the Mo(2)(formamidinate)(4) compounds and the first one has never been observed in such complexes. Thus, in surprising contrast to previously observed behavior of the dimolybdenum unit, when it is surrounded by the very basic guanidinate ligand hpp, there is an extraordinary stabilization of the higher oxidation numbers of the molybdenum atoms.  相似文献

We describe a new combinatorial method for studying the exchange between solution adsorbates and nanoscale features within libraries generated via dip-pen nanolithography. Four different compounds, 1-octadecanethiol, 16-mercaptohexadecanoic acid, ferrocene (11-mercaptoundecyl), and ferrocene (11-mercapto-1-oxoundecyl), are studied on amorphous and single-crystal gold substrates. This series of adsorbates allows us to compare the exchange properties of patterns of nanoscale features as a function of composition, feature size, and type of underlying substrate. Moreover, these properties can be compared and contrasted with bulk SAM properties. The novel strategy provides not only a method for initiating site-specific exchange processes but also a way of extracting kinetic information about the rate of such processes in situ.  相似文献

A novel approach is presented for the controlled intramolecular collapse of linear polymer chains to give well-defined single-molecule nanoparticles whose structure is directly related to the original linear polymer. By employing a combination of living free radical polymerization and benzocyclobutene (BCB) chemistry, nanoparticles can be routinely prepared in multigram quantities with the size being accurately controlled by either the initial degree of polymerization of the linear chain or the level of incorporation of the BCB coupling groups. The latter also allows the cross-link density of the final nanoparticles to be manipulated. In analogy with dendritic macromolecules, a significant reduction of up to 75% in the hydrodynamic volume is observed on going from the starting random coil linear chains to the corresponding nanoparticles. The facile nature of the living free radical process also permits wide variation in monomer selection and functional group incorporation and allows novel macromolecular architectures to be prepared. Furthermore, the use of block copolymers functionalized with benzocyclobutene groups in only one of the blocks gives, after intramolecular collapse, a hybrid architecture in which a single linear polymer chain is attached to the globular nanoparticle.  相似文献

Magic-angle spinning solid-state NMR (SSNMR) studies of the beta1 immunoglobulin binding domain of protein G (GB1) are presented. Chemical shift correlation spectra at 11.7 T (500 MHz 1H frequency) were employed to identify signals specific to each amino acid residue type and to establish backbone connectivities. High sensitivity and resolution facilitated the detection and assignment of every 15N and 13C site, including the N-terminal (M1) 15NH3, the C-terminal (E56) 13C', and side-chain resonances from residues exhibiting fast-limit conformational exchange near room temperature. The assigned spectra lend novel insight into the structure and dynamics of microcrystalline GB1. Secondary isotropic chemical shifts report on conformation, enabling a detailed comparison of the microcrystalline state with the conformation of single crystals and the protein in solution; the consistency of backbone conformation in these three preparations is the best among proteins studied so far. Signal intensities and line widths vary as a function of amino acid position and temperature. High-resolution spectra are observed near room temperature (280 K) and at <180 K, whereas resolution and sensitivity greatly degrade substantially near 210 K; the magnitude of this effect is greatest among the side chains of residues at the intermolecular interface of the microcrystal lattice, which we attribute to intermediate-rate translational diffusion of solvent molecules near the glass transition. These features of GB1 will enable its use as an excellent model protein not only for SSNMR methods development but also for fundamental studies of protein thermodynamics in the solid state.  相似文献

A new apparatus for mixing sample and reagent in flow injection analysis (FIA) is described. The continuously variable volume reactor (CVVR) replaces the conventional mixing coil in a flow injection (FI) manifold to provide mixing and dilution. A linear actuator motor allows control of the chamber volume via LabVIEW software. The chamber volume can be incremented in steps of 1 μl over the range 68-1704 μl. In addition, the chamber has an integral variable-speed stirring unit that is also under computer control. Experiments were performed to evaluate the dispersion characteristics of this new device, evaluate the volume reproducibility, and understand the mixing characteristics. Use of the chamber is shown in the determination of iron(II) in pond water, and in NIST SRM 1643d with excellent results and a detection limit of 3.7 μg/l iron(II). Advantages of the CVVR and future research activities using the device are discussed.  相似文献
