A novel scandium ortho-methoxynitrosobenzene-dimer complex: mechanistic implications for the nitroso-Diels-Alder reaction

Arylnitroso dienophiles exist in equilibrium with their dimeric counterparts, which in turn form stable bidentate complexes with scandium(III) triflate and react with cyclohexadiene to give the corresponding Diels-Alder adduct at the same rate as the normal thermal process.     

Synthesis and coordination chemistry of a water-soluble verdazyl radical. structures and magnetic properties of M(H2O)2(vdCO2)(2).2H2O (M = Co,Ni; vdCO2 = 1,5-dimethyl-6-oxo-verdazyl-3-carboxylate)

The synthesis of a verdazyl radical with a carboxylate substituent renders the radical highly soluble in water, thereby permitting the aqueous synthesis of Ni(II) and Co(II) verdazyl complexes which have been structurally and magnetically characterized.     

Polar,non-coordinating ionic liquids as solvents for the alternating copolymerization of styrene and CO catalyzed by cationic palladium catalysts

The palladium-catalyzed copolymerization of styrene and CO in an ionic liquid solvent, 1-hexylpyridinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, gave improved yields and increased molecular weights compared to polymerizations run in methanol.     

Photo-induced ligand substitution at a remote site via electron transfer in a porphyrin-appended rhenium carbonyl supermolecule

The photochemical and electrochemical properties of a Zn-porphyrin appended rhenium(I) tricarbonyl bipyridine 3-Me-pyridine complex have been investigated; visible-light sensitisation of electron transfer results in ligand substitution at a site remote from the chromophore.     

Routine preparation of air-dried negatively stained and unstained specimens on holey carbon support films: a review of applications

Several representative examples are given of the successful application of negative staining across the holes of holey carbon support films using 5% (w/v) ammonium molybdate solution containing trehalose. The inclusion of 0.1% (w/v) trehalose is considered to be most satisfactory, although good data have also been obtained in the presence of 0.01 and 1.0% (w/v) trehalose. The examples given fall into the following groups: protein molecules in the absence of polyethylene glycol (PEG), protein molecules in the presence of PEG (Mr 1000), lipoproteins, lipids and membranes, filaments and tubules, viruses in the absence of PEG, viruses in the presence of PEG, aqueous polymer solutions, and finally for comparison purposes, four unstained samples studied in the presence of trehalose alone. In all these cases, and many others not documented here, successful spreading of the sample across holes has been achieved, with the sample embedded within a thin film of air-dried ammonium molybdate+trehalose. These specimens can be rapidly produced and provide an alternative to negatively stained specimens on carbon support films. Specimen stability in the electron bean is good and such specimens can usually generate superior negatively stained TEM images without flattening and adsorption artefacts. The formation of 2-D arrays/crystals of protein molecules and viruses, suspended across holes in the presence of ammonium molbybdate+trehalose, and trehalose alone, is also demonstrated.     

Helium and point defect accumulation: (i) microstructure and mechanical behaviour

Ferritic/martensitic (F/M) steels are good candidate structural materials for the future fusion reactors and spallation sources. However, irradiation of steels is known to produce hardening, loss of ductility, shift in ductile to brittle transition temperature (DBTT) and reduction of fracture toughness and creep resistance starting at low doses. Helium (He), produced by transmutation during the irradiation, also impacts mechanical properties. Numerous experimental and theoretical studies on the evolution of the microstructure of steels under irradiation have been conducted until now. We review the effect of irradiation-induced point defects and in particular of He on the mechanical properties of F/M steels. To cite this article: R. Schäublin et al., C. R. Physique 9 (2008).     

Measures of distance for atomic charge and momentum densities and their relationship to physical properties

Atomic charge and momentum densities of 91 atoms (He? U) are classified in terms of their L₁, L₂, and entropic measures of distance from the densities of the preceding atoms. Far U.V. absorption spectra of manganese halides between 20 and 67 eV.

The absorption spectra of evaporated thin films of MnF₂, MnCl₂, MnBr₂ have been measured in the energy range 20–67 eV. The onset of the absorption of 3p Mn²⁺ is about 50 eV. At lower energies, the structures may be attributed to transitions from 2s F^-, 4s Br^- and 3d Mn²⁺ levels.
