On the controversial formation of silver diboride: Processing of Ag + 2B powders by spark plasma sintering

Following recent theoretical studies based on electronic structure calculations conducted on Ag- and Au-borides which estimated their superconducting behaviour at elevated transition temperatures, the preparation of AgB₂ was attempted in this work by reactive Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) from Ag and B elemental powders. It was found that, independently from the processing conditions adopted, the formation of a new phase, which corresponds to a small peak on the XRD pattern at 2θ equal to about 28°, cannot be attributed to AgB₂. In fact, it was shown that the new phase detected on sintered pellets is most likely boric acid which is formed only if the sample is left in contact with air. If SPSed samples were stored under inert (Ar) atmosphere, no additional phases other than unreacted elements were observed.     

H-start for exclusively heteronuclear NMR spectroscopy: The case of intrinsically disordered proteins

Here, we present a series of exclusively heteronuclear multidimensional NMR experiments, based on ¹³C direct detection, which exploit the ¹H polarization as a starting source to increase the signal-to-noise ratio. This contributes to make this spectroscopy more useful and usable. Examples are reported for a suitable system such as securin, an intrinsically disordered protein of 22 kDa.     

Searching for biomarkers of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease using proteomics: The current state

Detection of proteins which may be potential biomarkers of disorders represents a big step forward in understanding the molecular mechanisms that underlie pathological processes. In this context proteomics plays the important role of opening a path for the identification of molecular signatures that can potentially assist in early diagnosis of several clinical disturbances. Aim of this report is to provide an overview of the wide variety of proteomic strategies that have been applied to the investigation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a severe disorder that causes an irreversible damage to the lungs and for which there is no cure yet. The results in this area published over the past decade show that proteomics indeed has the ability of monitoring alterations in expression profiles of proteins from fluids/tissues of patients affected by COPD and healthy controls. However, these data also suggest that proteomics, while being an attractive tool for the identification of novel pathological mediators of COPD, remains a technique mainly generated and developed in research laboratories. Great efforts dedicated to the validation of these biological signatures will result in the proof of their clinical utility.     

Alk‐1‐ene Polymerization in the Presence of a Monocyclopentadienyl Zirconium(IV) Acetamidinate Catalyst: Microstructural and Mechanistic Insights

Suitably activated, (Cp*){N(^tBu)C(Me)N(Et)}ZrMe₂ is known to initiate the ‘living’ and isotactic‐selective polymerization of alk‐1‐enes, and it can be used to synthesize block copolymers and stereoblock polymers. We report a full molecular kinetic investigation of propene, but‐1‐ene, and hex‐1‐ene polymerization with a MAO‐activated catalyst system. By combining NMR microstructural polymer analysis with QM modeling of the active species, the complicated regio‐ and stereochemistry of the polyinsertion process, as well as the active chain‐transfer pathways, are investigated. The perspectives and limitations of this catalyst for application in (stereo)block polymerizations are discussed.

     

One‐pot synthesis of aryl and heteroaroyl‐substituted hydroxypyrazolines from the reactions of β‐alkoxyvinyl trichloromethyl ketones with heteroarylhydrazides

The one‐step regiospecific synthesis of a novel series of 10 trichloromethyl‐, aryl‐, and heteroaroyl‐substituted 5‐hydroxy‐2‐pyrazolines affords 1‐(2‐thenoyl)‐, 1‐(2‐furoyl)‐, and 1‐(isonicotinoyl)‐3‐aryl‐5‐hydroxy‐5‐trichloromethyl‐4,5‐dihydro‐1H‐pyrazoles in 63–92% yields from the cyclocondensation reactions of 1,1,1‐trichloro‐4‐methoxy‐4‐aryl‐3‐buten‐2‐ones (where aryl substituents are –C₆H₅, 4‐CH₃C₆H₄, 4‐OCH₃C₆H₄, 4‐FC₆H₄, 4‐ClC₆H₄, 4‐BrC₆H₄) with 2‐thiophenecarboxylic hydrazide, furoic hydrazide, and isonicotinic acid hydrazide, respectively. Dehydration reaction of two 2‐pyrazolines with P₂O₅ furnished the corresponding 1H‐pyrazoles in low yields (21–29%). © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Heterotopic helicand for designing heterometallic helicates

A new diazine tetratopic helicand, H4L, is obtained from 3-formylsalicylic acid and hydrazine. The reaction between H4L and cobalt(II) perchlorate, iron(III) perchlorate, and sodium carbonate leads to triple-stranded tetranuclear anionic helicates, [L3Co(II)2Fe(III)2]2-, which are connected through Na ions, resulting in chiral coordination polymers, [L3Na2Fe2Co2(H2O)4(EtOH)2].3H2O.
