Synthesis and resolution of 2-(diphenylphosphino)heptahelicene

Palladium catalysed Heck couplings have been applied to the two-step synthesis of a stilbene derivative bearing a diphenylphosphine oxide function which represents a suitable precursor for the photochemical generation of the corresponding [7]-helicene. After reduction of the phosphine oxide, resolution of the monodentate helical phosphine has been performed by means of the ortho-metallated (R)-1-(naphthyl)ethylamine-palladium complex. A ruthenium complex of (heptahelicen-2-yl)diphenylphosphine has also been prepared and fully characterized.

Development of the overpotential simulator for polymer electrolyte fuel cells and application for optimization of cathode structure

We developed a novel computational method to investigate the influences of the microstructure of the polymer electrolyte fuel cell cathode catalyst layer on the overpotential characteristic toward its optimization. Three-dimensional cathode catalyst layer models were constructed by applying three-dimensional porous structure simulator and developed simulator was used to study the overpotential characteristics. Our results showed that the overpotential decreased as decrease of the standard deviation of the ionomer thickness distribution due to the increase of number of active sites.     

Essential oils of Daucus carota subsp. carota of Tunisia obtained by supercritical carbon dioxide extraction

The essential oils and supercritical CO2 extracts of wild Daucus carota L. subsp. carota from two different sites in Tunisia were investigated. The main components of the essential oil of the flowering and mature umbels with seeds from Sejnane were eudesm-7(11)-en-4-ol (8.2 - 8.5%), carotol (3.5 - 5.2%), sabinene (12.0 -14.5%), a-selinene (7.4 - 8.6) and 11-alpha-(H)-himachal-4-en-1-beta-ol (12.7 - 17.4%), whereas the oils from Tunis were predominantly composed of elemicin (31.5 - 35.3%) and carotol (48.0 - 55.7%). The antimicrobial activity of the essential oils were assayed by using the broth dilution method on Escherichia coli ATCC 35218 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 43300, and clinical strains of Candida albicans and C. tropicalis 1011 RM. The MIC values obtained were all > 2.5% (v/v).     

Ab Initio Diabatic energies and dipole moments of the electronic states of RbLi molecule

For all states dissociating below the ionic limit Li^? Rb⁺, we perform a diabatic study for ¹Σ⁺ electronic states dissociating into Rb (5s, 5p, 4d, 6s, 6p, 5d, 7s, 4f) + Li (2s, 2p, 3s). Furthermore, we present the diabatic results for the 1–11 ³σ, 1–8 ^1,3Π, and 1–4 ^1,3Δ states. The present calculations on the RbLi molecule are complementary to previous theoretical work on this system, including recently observed electronic states that had not been calculated previously. The calculations rely on ab‐initio pseudopotential, core polarization potential operators for the core‐valence correlation and full valence configuration interaction approaches, combined to an efficient diabatization procedure. For the low‐lying states, diabatic potentials and permanent dipole moments are analyzed, revealing the strong imprint of the ionic state in the ¹Σ⁺ adiabatic states. The transition dipole moment is used to evaluate the radiative lifetimes of the vibrational levels trapped in the 2 ¹Σ⁺ excited states for the first time. In addition to the bound–bound contribution, the bound–free term has been evaluated using the Franck–Condon approximation and also exactly added to the total radiative lifetime. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     

Synthesis and X‐Ray Analysis of a New [6]Helicene

A new disubstituted hexahelicene derivative 3 bearing methoxy functions at positions 3 and 14 has been prepared in racemic form through a Heck reaction followed by photocyclodehydrogenation. Suitable crystals of rac‐3 were analyzed by X‐ray crystallography and showed similar geometry to the structure of hexahelicene itself. Deprotection of 3 using boron tribromide led to 3,14‐dihydroxyhexahelicene 4 in quantitative yield. The complexation of transition metal atoms seemed to be quite possible by these two bidentate hexahelicene derivatives.     

Purification and Biochemical Characterization of Extracellular β-Glucosidases from the Hypercellulolytic Pol6 Mutant of <Emphasis Type="Italic">Penicillium occitanis</Emphasis>

The Pol6 mutant of Penicillium occitanis fungus is of great biotechnological interest since it possesses a high capacity of cellulases and β-glucosidase production with high cellulose degradation efficiency (Jain et al., Enzyme Microb Technol, 12:691–696, 1990; Hadj-Taieb et al., Appl Microbiol Biotechnol, 37:197–201, 1992; Ellouz Chaabouni et al., Enzyme Microb Technol, 16:538–542, 1994; Ellouz Chaabouni et al., Appl Microbiol Biotechnol, 43:267–269, 1995). In this work, two forms of β-glucosidase (β-glu 1 and β-glu 2) were purified from the culture supernatant of the Pol6 strain by gel filtration, ion exchange chromatography, and preparative anionic native electrophoresis. These enzymes were eluted as two distinct species from the diethylamino ethanol Sepharose CL6B and anionic native electrophoresis. However, both behaved identically on sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (MW, 98 kDa), shared the same amino acid composition, carbohydrate content (8%), and kinetic properties. Moreover, they strongly cross-reacted immunologically. They were active on cellobiose and pNPG with Km values of 1.43 and 0.37 mM, respectively. β-glu 1 and β-glu 2 were competitively inhibited by 1 mM of glucose and 0.03 mM of δ-gluconolactone. They were also significantly inhibited by Hg²⁺ and Cu² at 2 mM. The addition of purified enzymes to the poor β-glucosidase crude extract of Trichoderma reesei increased its hydrolytic efficiency on H₃P0₄ swollen cellulose but had no effect with P. occitanis crude extract. Besides their hydrolytic activities, β-glu 1 and β-glu 2 were endowed with trans-glycosidase activity at high concentration of glucose.     

Growth Parameters,Photosynthetic Performance,and Biochemical Characterization of Newly Isolated Green Microalgae in Response to Culture Condition Variations

This work aimed to characterize two native microalgal strains newly isolated from South Mediterranean areas and identified as Chlorella sorokiniana ES3 and Neochloris sp. AM2. The growth properties and biochemical composition of these microalgae were evaluated in different culture media (Algal, BG-11, f/2, and Conway). Among the tested media, nitrate- and phosphate-rich Algal medium provided the maximum biomass productivities (85.5 and 111.5 mg l^?1 day^?1 for C. sorokiniana and Neochloris sp., respectively), while the nitrate- and phosphate-deficient f/2 medium resulted in the highest lipid productivities (24.1 and 35.8 mg l^?1 day^?1 for C. sorokiniana and Neochloris sp., respectively). The physiological state of both microalgae was investigated under different light and temperature levels using the pulse amplitude-modulated fluorometry. The better photosynthetic efficiency of C. sorokiniana was obtained at 23 °C with a light saturation of 156 μE m^?2 s^?1, while that of Neochloris sp. was achieved at 15 °C with a light saturation of 151 μE m^?2 s^?1. The analysis of fatty acid profile and biodiesel parameters revealed that C. sorokiniana, cultivated in Algal and f/2 media, can be considered as a suitable candidate for high-quality biodiesel production.     

Synthesis and characterization of a new monophosphate (C<Subscript>6</Subscript>H<Subscript>16</Subscript>N<Subscript>2</Subscript>)(H<Subscript>2</Subscript>PO<Subscript>4</Subscript>)<Subscript>2</Subscript>

Chemical preparation, crystal structure, and NMR spectroscopy of a new trans-2,5-dimethylpiperazinium monophosphate are given. This new compound crystallizes in the triclinic system, with the space group P-1 and the following parameters: a = 6.5033(3), b = 7.6942(4), c = 8.1473(5) Å, α = 114.997(3), β = 92.341(3), γ = 113.136(3), V = 329.14(3) ų, Z = 1, and D_x = 1.565 g cm^?3. The crystal structure has been determined and refined to R = 0.030 and R _w(F ²) = 0.032 using 1558 independent reflections. The structure can be described as infinite [H₂PO₄] _n ^n? chains with (C₆H₁₆N₂)²⁺ organic cations anchored between adjacent polyanions to form columns of anions and cations running along the b axis. This compound has also been investigated by IR, thermal, and solid-state, ¹³C and ³¹P MAS NMR spectroscopies and Ab initio calculations.
